I hate buying pants.
I hate buying pants. I'm too big around the waist, and my inseam is short, so I can never find my size. Plus, if I do find my size, I feel like I'm surrendering to my weight, because I always feel like in just a few weeks, I'm going to have a smaller waist, so why buy pants that won't fit then? But then a few weeks go by, and my waist is the same, so I should have bought the pants when I could find my size, and of course now, they're no longer on sale.
And then there's the whole take them in the fitting room and try them on thing. Hate it. Takes too long, and it's no fun. But I tell you what -- when I finally do find something that fits, and if I can talk myself past the "I'm going to lose weight quickly" BS, then I buy six pairs immediately.
But all in all, I hate buying pants.
What has this got to do with cycling? Well, I've lost just enough weight that my pants don't fit right, but I've plateaued so I can't decide whether to get new ones now, or wait a few weeks. I've been plateaued for six months. But there's always hope, right? Or Divine Intervention?
It always comes back to one truth: I hate buying pants.

DG,
Do what I do when "down sizing." Go to Sam's Club where they sell men's pants for $9.99-18.99 AND they have no dressing room. Guess at your size and if in doubt buy an additional size. Try them on when you get home before you put on your cycling duds so that at least you're efficient with changing clothes. Return what doesn't fit. BTW, I've never been disappointed with their pants and I never feel guilty about shrinking out of them before their useful life ends. This way they make a nicer donation to the thrift shop.

Just get a belt with more notches and hold off on getting more pants. Increase the miles and you can buy a smaller size in a few months. Just take up the slack in the waist in the back......

DG - I am rolling on the floor literally - ROTFLMAO.
You expressed my thoughts EXACTLY.
At 6 feet (well, almost - you tend to shrink a bit as you grow older) and with an inseam of 29 inches, I bet I have more of a problem than you do. Pants with an inseam of 29 are most difficult to find.
In addition, these years of cycling have made my butt and hips pretty small, all-in-all, and my legs pretty big. Therefore, I have the problem of my pants sliding down my tummy to rest below the tummy, making my pants legs drop back down so that I am walking on the cuffs again!
So, my defense is to wear the pants pretty tight, hoping they won't fall off. I do ok with Levis, but "Dress" pants are awful. I should go to suspenders, but I consider that a surrender to age.
And, I think 220 lbs is THE perfect weight!
And, that is why I wear bicycling bibs!
Obviously a man with little experience in the area attempting to advise us who do. Think of trying to put pants on a greased upside down pear.

I think it would be great fun to go into one of those tiny fitting booths, wait about 5 minutes - pop your head out the door and start screaming "there's no paper in here".

DeeGee,
Do what I have been doing, buy 'em at a consignment/charity store. Over the last year and a half I have dropped from 210 to 165, and went from a 38 to 34 inch waist. Still dropping, will probably end up back at my youthful svelte figure of about 155-160 and 32 inch waist . I had the same feelings as you about throwing money at new clothes that I would not be wearing a few months down the road due to weight loss. There's a couple of great charity stores here in town that have stuff in like new condition (probably someone else got too big for 'em). I pick up slacks and dress shirts for no more than five bucks each, some as low as a couple of bucks. And all high end name brands that are professionally dry cleaned before they put them on the rack. And when I shrink out of them, I donate them back to the charity and take the tax deduction. Leaving me more money for important things, like bike stuff. Kinda like the 'Circle of Life' in The Lion King, but with pants instead of wild animals ....

Just bite the bullet and get new pants. Yeah, it's a pain shopping for them, but hey you need a reward for the weight lost. If you lost more, just donate the ones that don't fit. No big deal.

Since nothing is worn under a Kilt, would one need to apply Chamois cream directly to a Brooks saddle? ......and would that be harmful to the leather instead of the recommended Proofide??

Why do you pants? I wear shorts 8-9 months of the year.

Finally sussed out what you are talking about. Differences in the Queens English and American mean that I had put a differnt meaning on what you were talking about- You mean trousers, wheras pants in our English are undergarments. I was just trying to work out what you wanted- Y fronts or boxers-- Or knowing DG --Thongs or G Strings
Now I have a very good man that lives not too many doors away from me that can put a gusset in anything- without damaging the top tube either. The welding gun might get you a bit warm but he is a top grade frame builder. (Sorry--Different gussets again)

Last year before I started my cycling journey, I needed 44s as well. Sometimes I really had to dig deep in the piles. At Sam's they were usually there, but not always in every style. This gives both of us even more incentive to burn more bike calories while intaking less food calories.
A few weeks ago I read a book called "Heft on Wheels." It's an autobiography about a college professor in his late 30s using his bicycle to beat his addictions--- alchohol, smoking, and a terrible diet. He dropped about 75 lbs in 6 months--- but he nearly killed himself by eating very little. The book is a real tribute to how dedication to bicycling can turn a person's life around.
If you are like me, I will be satisfied losing another 25 lbs this summer and then keeping it off during the winter of '06-'07. If it takes me 3-4 years to finally reach the weight my Doc says I should weigh--- then so be it. And I will have a lot of fun getting there!
Good luck with the pants!
Bob
P.S. PM me if you would like for me to send you my old 44s. My inseam is 32 but you could roll them up and you could just tell people you don't want to get them caught in the chain!
