Great Balls of Cotton ! Stick it in yer Ear !

Hi guys,

I keep running across posts about what to carry to change a flat but usually they leave out what I consider to be an important items....a couple of balls of cotton. When you are changing a flat and you can't pin point the reason run the ball of cotton around the inside of your tire. Any small item in the tire will snag it. Sure saves you having to pull over again in a few to change another tire. Also dont forget to put powder on your new spare tube before you take it along. I also said 2 balls of cotton..this tip I read about years ago in a cycling mag..you remmenber them when they actually had helpful info in them rather about how you now just can't live without carbon fiber water bottle cages???? really they are 58 bucks each at my LBS...well enough of the rant. *S* The 2 balls of cotton is to stick em in your ears when riding into prolonged head winds. Yes I works ...seems that besides the physical problem of riding into a headwind there is a psy one as well for alot of people. The cotton cuts down on the wind noise and some claim makes it a bit easier.

Keep2up

I take my hearing aids out, because the amplify the wind noise, but never thought about placing cotton balls in as a replacement. Now I won't hear anything. Ah, finally solitude inclusive of a reduction in audio distractions. Thanks.

Naw, because then you'd get the squablling with the guys who insist their Ti cotton balls are better .

Bikingguy,

Post the same suggestion over on the Classic and Vintage Forum. They love this kind of stuff and will probably suggest several more very inexpensive solutions to typical mechanical problems. And they won't even bring up carbon fiber, titanium, nor even aluminum, unless it has to do with 20-40 year old Campagnola components.

Don't use cotton balls to find the thorn- One of the old school and my hand always tells me where the thorn is. Hurts at times but as I have enough trouble keeping myself dry on a ride- I can imagine trying to find a soggy bit of cotton somewhere in the saddle bag.

Absolutely no sense of humor and an ego as fragile as a carbon fiber frame! Don't turn to see us waving good bye.

When I first read the header of the post I thought he was kidding, but it wasn't nearly as funny as the responses so I began to think he might be serious. Shouldn't jokes be funny?

My father, as an example, would simply ignore people he really didn't like or thought were stupid. He would likely use a phrase similar to Bikiniguy's for people he had some interest in staying connected with. I'm going to error on the side that the response is of the same variety my father would deliver... and respond in kind... don't let the door hit you on the a$$ on the way out.
