That's when I would have unclipped my left foot and pedaled lightly until I passed the trouble spot.

Welcome to the forums and especially the 50+ clubhouse. Hope you like pie.

+1

I unclip one foot immediately for just about any excuse - sand, stop sign, kids, dogs, peds who don't move over, etc.

And, welcome

+1 for SPD. If you are just starting to ride again, like many, you will probably find that you may want to ride more miles/wk or go for longer rides, so the shoes and cleats will be an asset.

I am pretty much a newb, I have ridden some and do about 50-70 mpw on a couple of road bikes and just recently went to SPD's. What a difference. It was a step change in pleasure. I don't compete (except against myself) and ride mainly for L4-L5 and L5-S1 herniations, but it is like night and day difference for me. I would have to say, based on my own experience, you should treat yourself.

Well said! That was what I meant when I wrote "approaching stop signs" I should have been more thorough. Better safe than sorry. As your experience and confidence grow you can wait a hair longer, and often the potential hazard dissolves before you even get to unclip.

But for now, I click out at the mere hint of approaching trouble. I just don't panic as much as I did last year that I won't be able to get out (or back in!)
