mapping software
Another noob question.
I have been using the Yahoo Maps Beta for planning routes. It is very accurate when it comes to distances. I would also like to get elevation information which is lacking in Yahoo. Do you use mapping software with elevations? Can you save the elevation charts?
Is it a free internet resource or a purchased program?
What do you recommend?
Thanks!

I use DeLorme (5.0) which has its pros and cons. I think it's about $50 (more for more regions of the country).
It does elevation profiles (you've probably seen them - they come out green and brown by default), and you can even mouse over the route and see the continuous grade, etc. plus 3D rendering, etc.
That said, it has maybe one of the world's worst user interfaces - it's not at all intuitive, and some of the maps it prints are less than useful. I use it primarily for scoping out a route as the detail is quite good - it pretty much does have everything. But whether it outweighs the tedium and frustration is a question you'll have to answer.

I use DeLorme TOPO 6.0. I got it for 38.00 on eBay. It is a bit hard to use right out of the box but gets easier with time. I like it for printing routes with profiles and distances. You can save the resulting files as .jpg or .bmp. I usually save as .jpg and compress further with a photo editor such as Paint Shop Pro. The original .jpg here was about 1.25 mb.... shown here it is compressed to 399 kb.

I use TopoRoute:
https://www.toporoute.com/
It is pretty simple, but is based on Google maps and is free.
You can save routes and get mileage vs. elevation plots
and the route plotting can be set to automatically follow roads.
And no signup.
