Granola bars here. Its the only thing my wife buys regularly.

webist 10-15-06 08:14 PM

I take along a Balance Bar. My rides are usually about 2 hours duration, so I don't alwasys eat the bar. It's good to have though.

SlowSpinner 10-15-06 08:22 PM

I fell and smashed a banna in my jersey pocket. It was such a tragic and messy acident that I have to this day not put another banna in my jersey pockets. No, I do not and will not stick a banna in my shorts.

Please take no offence as none is intended.

For my own personal information I looked up Fig Newtons on the Web

http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.c...us.php3?item=5

so here, in the UK, we seem to be well served by our Jacob's Fig Rolls.

enjoy your midride snack whatever it is.

1+ for Fig Newtons. . .when I can't find any sheep.

Lion Steve 10-16-06 06:01 AM

Pretzels, crackers, cheese. Also, I like Cliff Bars. I have seen that they are everyday priced at Wal Mart for .98. They go for $1.49 at the grocery stores.

Digital Gee 10-16-06 09:58 AM

Has anyone mentioned breakfast bars? I get 'em at Ralphs for $2/box of ten. Taste like crap, except in the middle of a long ride, and then they taste sensational! Plus they fit in the bag easily.

BluesDawg 10-16-06 10:08 AM

Self-supported - homemade trail mix, Clif bars, Hammer gel. On an organized ride - peanut butter, banana and honey sandwiches, fig newtons, orange wedges, saltine crackers. On a long ride when I'm really tosted I'll stop at a store for a Snickers bar and a Coke.

Tom Bombadil 10-16-06 10:32 AM

A variation on a theme ... I like raspberry newtons and dried apricots & peaches.

How large a bag do you have strapped on that bike?

berts 10-16-06 10:54 AM

OK - here goes
Dates, other dried fruit, halva, banana, apple, pear, homemade energy solution consisting of honey+pomegranate+salt, NO energy bars.

I travel light and take the bare minimum on any particular ride. This "minimalistic" policy has gotten me into trouble on more than one ocassion when the distance and/or effort was greater than anticipated.

howsteepisit 10-16-06 10:54 AM

I fnd that Kellogs Pop Tarts are pretty good on a ride, but then the wife and I tend to eatthem all bofore my rides so they are currently banned from the house.

+2 for Fig Newtons, -1 on sheep (the wool gets stuck in my teeth.)

jisaak 10-16-06 11:11 AM

Fig newtons, bananas, Nature Valley bars (especially the peanut butter ones!) and gatorade for the longer rides.
Pop Tarts? So you have a solar powered toaster? :)

Yeah, when it gets hot enough, you can wrap the stuff like soft taffy. The only hassle is cleaning the sticky residue off at the end of the ride.

stonecrd 10-16-06 12:23 PM

I also am very rarely out for more than 3.5 hours so I eat a good breakfast and take a couple of Gels. Lately its been GU Expresso Love.

I did a ride several years ago and missed my backup at one of the stops. People we had been riding with filled our water bottles and added Maxim power drink to it and gave us a power bar. It had the constituency of Cardboard- had a very artificial sacharin taste and took ages to chew. We then found out the benefit of Maxim because it was the only liquid we had- It disguised the sacharin taste with something that was almost as bad, but we had to drink a lot of it to get rid of the powerbars. When we were offered some more Maxim as we obviously enjoyed it- we declined- water sufficed for the next twenty miles. Now I don't know if it was the Maxim or the powerbars but we had wind assistance for the next 20 miles and that was not enjoyable being on the back of the Tandem. As to wrapping them round the Handlebars- They ought to be wrapped round the neck of the person that invented them.

I have a small handlebar bag sometimes and sometimes a banana bag under the saddle. How big a bag do you think I'd need for this?
The other things listed are favorites at rest stops on supported rides.

Round Lance peanut butter crackers and bananas.

Trsnrtr 10-17-06 03:44 PM

I just got back from a 102 mile ride (solo) and I had a convenience store brownie at 19 miles in and a 12" turkey breast sandwich at Subway at 42 miles in. My last 60 miles were non-stop. I guess my mid-ride snacks officially now are brownies and turkey sandwiches. :)

Beats carrying watermelon!

Just finished my best Century ever and my mainstay was M&M's...started with peanut and swithed to plain on the way back. They also had banana chips that I ate a few times. This was also my first Century with lunch in the middle and I felt stronger than ever at the end even though the Century turned out to be 111 miles. Our paceline averaged 20 on the way back...and I even pulled for 50cm !
