Mid rides Snacks

We have had the favourite Beer posting-For nutrition and post ride recovery of course. And we all know and understand the requirements of mid ride Pie.

So what is your favourite during ride snack? And if anyone says powerbars- we'll banish them to The mountain biking section.

I have a variety that I take on a ride and it usually falls down to whatever cereal bar the wife has bought this week- but if you were to ask me my favourite snack whilst riding it would have to be Rich Fruit Cake.

What is your preferred snack?

Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies. Full of health destroying chemicals and fats, but they do the trick for me. Wrapped in cellophane and available 2 for 50 cents at your local junk food store.

And, of course, the always present:

chocolate covered raisins, and of course bananas

If its a cafe stop then....... beans on toast

if its 2 cafe stops then..... apple pie and custard if they do it.

And Lin's home made Fruit Loaf, where the fruit is soaked in tea.

Thinks........Must do shorter rides.

A package of cheap vanilla sandwich cookies, 50 cents for about 20 cookies at any convenience store/bait shop in the South, and a bottle of chocolate milk. Or, if I can find it, a Peach NeHi.

I have an assortment of left over protein bars from my failed Atkins diet that I take along. My favorite would be the banana/peanut butter, or a baggy full of Raspberry fig newtons. I usually stop every 15 miles to stretch and grab a snack.

To me the best snack is......G.O.R.P. (Good Old Raisins & Peanuts)

I make my own and carry it in a lunch bag a quick shot of energy
without being to heavy on the tummy during a ride. This is good
food for everthing from a ride to an emergency kit. It won't spoil
easily nor is it to heavy in quanity.

1) Bananas
2) Beer Nuts
3) Gorp

Peanut butter and Jelly(jam) sandwich.
or
Fig newtons
or
Gu (I always have a couple of packets in my bag for emergencies)

Trsnrtr 10-15-06 08:16 AM

biscuits and gravy

The perfect 2nd lunch is half a PB&J sandwich (Skippy PB w/ Rasberry Jelly) , a couple handfulls of Trail Mix ( mixed nuts with M&Ms) , an Orange, half of a Cherry Power Bar, all washed down with Lemon-Lime Gatoraid

Fig bars, and (sorry, guess I'll be banished) I like powerbars in the summer. I can wrap them around my handle bars and eat a small bit at a time.

Please forgive my ignorance- We have a biscuit over here called Fig Rolls and I should think they are similar if not the same but What are Fig Newtons?

Bananas
Dried Apricots
Wally World Oats n Honey bars
Cheated this weekend and had a dark chocolate Milky Way... figured I had earned it!

I don't eat anythang during my rides, but then I'm usually only out for four hours or less... I might have some gel, though.

When I'm on the tandem, I take along a Power Bar Triple Threat (much tastier than a normal Power Bar) and I split it with my stoker.

But when I'm on one of those organized century rides, I eat ever'thang in sight! My favorite ride for eating on is the 2-day Tour des Lacs in September. The ride goes from Spokane to Coeur d'Alene on the first day, then comes back on the second. In previous years they've had a really tasty black bean salad. I'd leave the rest stops stuffed, but would develop an appetite for another helping by the next rest stop. On the second day, one of the food stops had freshly-baked pizza. And then when you got back to Spokane, they had a nice beer garden with more food.

Fig Newtons are a brand name of Nabisco. Fig bars would be the generic name.

cc_rider 10-15-06 04:35 PM

 Powerbar
You asked.

Seriously. Chocolate Powerbar. Tastes like a Toosie Roll.
Can't stand the other flavours.
Also take Nature Valley Granola Bars.

On orgaized rides, I go for oranges and bready things (bagels, muffins, bread) at the rest stops.
Post ride I always have a craving for cheese.

And what kind of drinks does a "Fig Bar" serve?

Is that where they have the statue of the guy with the fig leaf covering his vitals in the women's restroom, and every time the hinged fig leaf gets lifted up, a bell goes off in the bar?

Big Paulie 10-15-06 04:40 PM

Or Fig Newmans, which are excellent...

Clif bars, grapes (just don't swallow whole--almost choked on one once), gel packs, and yes-- fig newtons. Also PayDAy nut bars but not often. Cookies of any sort. On organized rides, I head straight for the Nutella jar and smear it on everything. A tall, ice-cold Endurox and some fruit when I get back. Mexican food is a great post long-ride eat.

Retro Grouch 10-15-06 04:58 PM

I'm rather fond of salted nut roll candy bars mid ride.

bkaapcke 10-15-06 05:34 PM

Read the ingredients on a cereal bay and you probably will never have another. I snack on; yogurt, bananas, toast, crackers, apples most of the time. bk
