Yup.

I'm just suprised that no one made wise cracks about Moosehead.

This reminds me of a quote from a former colleague/wag about faculty meetings: "The fight is so vicious because the stakes are so low."

BTW, I agree about Corona. No beer worth drinking should ever be bottled in clear glass. However if it is really hot and your choices are severely limited you can ignore this.

I think that we need to set some ground rules about an official beer of the 50+ crowd. Rule number 1 should be that it is widely available. The only exception to that rule is if the nominator agrees to send each and every 50+ participant in this thread a regular shipment of whatever local beverage they want to champion. Unfortunately this removes a number of truly great regional beers in the US and a whole world of wonderful beverages from across the pond.

I forget what rule number 2 is. Perhaps I should have another beer.

I feel compelled to explain my choice of Corona, although I have no idea why.....

Last May I had a chance to vacation in Destin, Florida at the Hilton on the beach. There I was sitting in the shade of an umbrella, cool breeze coming off the ocean, not a cloud in the sky. All you could hear was an occasional gull and the constant pounding of the surf. Off in the distance a sail boat goes floating by...... I think to myself, Self, you are in a Corona comercial. I hadn't had a beer in many months and I had never had a Corona, so I walked up to the bar on the beach, ordered a Carona, walked back to my shady spot and enjoyed it.

That was the last beer I've had and it tasted just fine. If I go back, I'll do it again.

Set and setting. (Wiki that if you don't know what it means.) I had a Genesse that tasted GREAT once, but that was a complete anomoly. It's a long story that involves a very hard bike ride. It was the only time I ever had to walk up part of a hill.

I think I answered this before on another thread, Sam Adams, Shiner, Killeans Red and Homebrew. Always have at least one after a ride! Exercise, eat right and you die anyway so you may just as well enjoy yourself.

Please keep it on topic folks.....
If it were sold over here, I'd go for Carlsberg Extra Strong at 9.2% alc., but failing that, Stella Artois (with fish and chips).
I do like the IPA story, but IPA is a bit too bitter for my taste.

I'm a fan of german and belgian wheat beers. But a current mainstream (usually means tasteless american beer) favorite is Blue Moon served with an orange slice. But I stock my workshop fridge with Guiness and Harp for a "half and half" (not the same as a black and tan!). I also like Tequiza but it's getting harder to find.

Fat Tire, of course, just because of the name. But it's regional.

Hmmm. Pilsner Urquel, or Guiness Extra Stout.

There's the local Atlanta Brewing Company's Peachtree Pale Ale that I'm particularly fond of, too.

Anyone familiar with Mackeson's Stout? May have spelled it wrong, but man, is it tasty! Light a match and hold it behind the bottle, and you won't see it. Great dark beer. Mmmm, good stuff!

Welllllll . . . . for us Over-50ers, what would be more appropriate than:

. . . out of Newport, OR. We're "beer-snobs" here in the Pacific Northwest - - even more so than coffee-snobs. Two other great PNW brews are both from the Deschutes Brewing Co. in Bend, OR:

I think the official 'drink' for cyclists should be BEER - any kind you fancy.

My personal preference would be Guinness while sitting outside a pub back home in Ireland ( bicycle against the wall nearby). Since moving to Hawaii I have enjoyed the delights of Kona Brewpub - Lavaman Pale Ale is particularly nice!!

Can't get them in the US but the best to me are:

CAFFREY'S IRISH ALE
VICTORIA BITTERS - Aussie brew

In the US have to go with:

Gordon Biersch Pilsner
