When did Rocco become Rocky?

That's the only name I ever knew him by. I believe Rocco was his "given" name. He was the most popular player on the Cleveland Indians roster and there was a near riot when, just before the start of the season, they traded him for some guy named Harvey Kueen. Almost as bad as the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

What are you talking about? I presume these are people that achieved something in the US at one time but just because they were big names in the world of Disco dancing or some other frivolous activity- It does not mean that the rest of us understand what you are talking about.

If it's any consolation Deeg, we loved him in Detroit too. Even my transplanted Noo Yawk Yankees fan grandmother, who regarded anyone wearing a Detroit uniform as subhuman, had a soft spot for him.

Oh Baseball. That's similar to our game of Rounders where you have a stupid round bat to hit a ball with. Difference is that you have turned it into a Professional sport and Rounders is still an organised Kids game over here.

My nephew just turned 4 the other day, and he's nuts about baseball. I'm dreading the day when one of his favorite players on the Orioles changes teams...which happens so often now, you can set your watch by it. I'm all for free agency, but it's a shame for the kids.

Earliest bicycling influence?

It would have to be my older brother on his J.C. Higgins 1 speed. It was a 1957 model, dark red, with white graphics and other than that pretty standard, no tank or headlamps. I remember how cool it was that they wrote the name into the crankshaft. But more importantly, I remember watching him ride to the end of the block and then turn the corner and disappear. More than anything that told me that you could go anywhere on a bicycle. Tricycles were never good enough after that.

But it was Curious George who got my courage worked up enough to borrow a friends bike and spend an hour or so till I could ride that Schwinn Pixie by myself.

By the way, that is a picture of the guy who invented the aluminum Christmas tree. So far as I know, it was never offered in steel, CF or Ti. :D

That pic of the aluminum Christmas tree needs to be in color, and include the rotating wheel of various colors of cellophane in front of the spotlight aimed at the tree.

You have to see spotted dick to understand why it is such a speciality over here.

Talking about food- I am off to france next month and going to a region where the local speciality is

"Tripoux" (mutton tripe with stuffed Sheeps Feet) Think this will be the first trip where I will not be frequenting the Local hostelries for a regional meal. Mind you- It is right in the middle of my favourite drinking wine. Cote Du Rhone. Although enough of the local wine and I might be tempted at some point in trying it.

How could it occur to someone to cook sheep's feet wrapped in its stomach? Yech! Reminds me of scrapple. :(

Some years ago, my brother asked if he could have a three japanese guys he knew from college over for our American Thanksgiving dinner. She said sure and over they came. They examined the food carefully, had a little turkey, some green beans, but not too much else. My brother said they were very reluctant to try our mashed potatoes!

Sounds a lot like McDonalds breakfast burritos. McDonalds is probably a lot cheaper.
