I use clipless on my newer road bikes. However, I do have a few old Schwinn, Raleigh and Nishiki road bikes that I ride around the neighborhood for fun. I use flats on these and I'm in the process of converting two of them to use silver MTB type pedals because they are superior to the junk that came with those bikes. So +1 for the change you're considering.
As for "Fred"ism, Interesting, with all the problems with the Tour De france, Landis, whatever, the OCP thing is not the big deal it was last year. Seems like the "Fred" look is in!

I have Shimano pedals with clipless on one side and platforms on the other best of both worlds. No it would not be Fredish, do what you like and forget the rest.
