Oh,and "Go Ducks" tonight

I've been cutting my own hair for years. My wife will trim the neck, but I've been doing it so long there's nothing to it. I figure if a barber can get $12 and a tip, he's making around $60 an hour. Myself I don't think it's worth it. When I started, I screwed up a few times, but when that happened I just cut it shorter to make up for it. Really, I don't do a bad job at all.

Anyone say the heck with it and just shave the dome?
I've resisted for a long time because it would kinda feel like machine-gunning prisoners of war. My wife also hates the idea. And one problem is that you either look cool or your head looks like somebody's giant thumb. I'm going to try it if my wife ever has an extended stay out of town. |
Nope. I have one lady who cuts it, and that's it. It's longer than most, although I just got it cut and it's a bit shorter for the "summer".

Supercuts. $12.00 Tuesdays. Cut it short, but not a buzz cut.

much more important is gettin those pesky, curly ear hairs  it still beats the lookin like a scraggly cat... and, as much as I'd luv to be able to, UC Bro has it all over me... |

Oh, and when I say I haven't cut mine in years, I mean I'd have to lose my foot long pony-tail. Oh, the joys of a full head of hair at 54 ;) |
I buzz my own and get Lovey to trim the neck line once in a while. There's not much left.

Not since I was 4 years old. I'm a "Klassy Kuts" guy ($12) like so many of you fellow penny pinching, cat food snacking pensioners and pensioners-in-training. When I went off to get my first haircut by myself as a kid ($.25), my dad said to just ask for a "regular boy's haircut". Went thru butch, crewcut, flattop, surfer mop, long haired hippy.......and now find myself back at, you guessed it, a regular guy's haircut.
Must comment that, over the years, I've watched the hair drifting down onto my lap turn from black to mostly gray. The turning of the seasons so to speak. My favorite hair cutter was named Rose....young and cute and she would repeatedly stick her boob in my ear. Give the old guy a thrill I guess. Yup, it worked! |

One time I cut my hair, and was getting all these compliments from co-workers except for one fellow who said I looked like I got run over by a lawn mower. From then on he was on my most trusted friend list, for he alone had spoken the truth. |
Been cutting my own for years with scissors, after spending a fortune at barber shops and never having a good cut. As far as the back and neck line, I just check it out in the mirror as best I can and take a stab at it...oops, I mean try to cut it straight. I'm so good at it now, I'm thinking of doing circumcisions part time for extra spending money.

No, but my wife does. I was constantly coming back from local barbers with bad haircuts, until one day she said-I think I could cut it at least as good as that! So we picked up a Wahl haircutting kit, & she's been doing it ever since (for many years now). And she is much better than the barbers were doing! And charges less too! (of course I never had to bribe the barber by offering to take them out to dinner!).
|
Wife always cuts mine. I let her do it to save time more than money, but her cuts are as good or better than the store bought brand. And she can cut my hair in ¼ the time of the girls at the shop (not counting the drive time).
|
I've been shaving my head since last summer but before that I went to the same woman for haircuts for 20 years or more. I should have shaved it sooner as I really like the look. My wife wasn't crazy about the idea but one day I just did it & luckily she liked it also.
|
My wife is a hair stylist, so my answer is a resounding, "NO".
|
I might trim it now & then when I let it go for too long, but I've been going to the same, no appointment necessary, barber for 17 years now. His price is now up to $13. It's only 6 blocks from my office, an easy lunch-time errand.
|
I have not cut my hair since before I turned 50.
|
I use a #1.5 attachment and do the whole thing. Not too much on top.
The Supercut lady did it in 5 minutes or less, and my scottish ancestry started yelling "unfair" as I have about 1/2 as much as others who also pay $12 and it takes 10-15 minutes. I figured I should get 1/2 price, and when I didn't, I bought the full electric razor kit. It is so much easier not to have to mess with it, and I happen to hate barbershops and the like. |
Now, Ron, the question on everybody's mind is, how does it work?
I'm prepared for a complete demonstration. OK, Garth, sit there. He's gonna put that thing on your melon, OK? Just a trim. Don't buzz me, OK? So tell me, Ron. Exactly how does the Suck Kut work? Well, as you can see, it sucks as it cuts. It certainly does suck. Turn it off, man! Turn it off! It's sucking my will to live! Oh, the humanity! |
I use a norelco triple head electric shaver in the summer and let it grow out in the winter but not too long its still shorter than most

Let me start by saying that I am retired Army . . . .
Four years ago I bought an Oster Fast Feed Adjustable clipper from a barber supply store. (It cost me $80! ) I put the blades of the "longer" setting for the top of my head and the "shorter" setting for the back and sides. I use an electric razor for the back of my neck. I was spending $10/ week to go to the barber. I figure I have "saved" $2,000 doing my own hair (and who knows how much time). :D |
Anyone else with what is politely called "Male Pattern Baldness"?
When I look at myself straight on in a mirror, there's hair to be seen, so occasionally I go for a trim. When it's done, the barber shows a mirror view of the back and top- and blimey, it's all shiny back there. Makes it hard to think generously about the tip! |
I bought a trimmer 7 yrs ago for $27. I have used them every 2 weeks at the lowest setting. I occaisonally use my electric shaver edger for around the ears and use the shaver on the back of my neck. The trimmer is fully depreciated now and my cost over the period is now down to 15cents! Even better than supercuts!
