Do you cut your own hair?

I do, with "mixed" results. I like it short, and the shorter, the better. Less "helmet hair." But I still have trouble with the back and the neckline, trying to finesse those clippers in the mirror using another mirror to see the first mirror and then trying to get the clippers straight. Anyway, am I the only one here who cuts his/her own hair? And if there are some more out there, any tips on getting the back straight? :D

humble_biker 05-30-07 12:48 PM

I do. I usually leave it a bit longer on the top than the sides for style points. And I use clippers for the neckline. What I do is hold my hand over the top and go at it. I don't use mirrors either that whole left right thing just confuses me. I've been doing it a long time and nobody has ever pointed out a crooked hairline so I don't know if it sucks or not. The reason why I started was in retaliation to a guy that refused to cut anything other than a mullet!

I should! After 24 years with a Military Haircut I should be able to do this in my sleep. But, I found that over the years that having a proper Barber cut my hair, and then use the straight razor on my neck and around the ears makes me feel good and is almost an extravagance for me. I enjoy the time talking with the barbers and getting the local poop.

I'm going to have to try that. We have an old fashioned barber just down the street a few blocks. I have tried that SuperCuts chain and always feel worse afterwards. Hence the self mutilation. But maybe a proper barber would be worth the time and $$.

HopedaleHills 05-30-07 12:53 PM

I don't, but I am cheap when it comes to haircuts. $12.00 at Supercuts.

I am also a Supercuts user but there is always ---

I hear that if you use this with a Dyson you can be done in milliseconds and color coordinated too:)

SaiKaiTai 05-30-07 01:24 PM

I have not cut my hair in years

wrafl 05-30-07 01:30 PM

I used too but since I started losing mine through age (baldness), I have my haircut at the VA barber shop, from an ex army guy. I sure walk out of there like just getting out of boot camp.

Mariner Fan 05-30-07 01:36 PM

Yep, use a number 2 attachment and buzz away.

Beverly 05-30-07 01:39 PM

Only to cut off those curls that won't behave in the mornings. My hair dresser says she knows when I've had the scissors out because there are little chunks of hair missing and she knows she didn't cut it that way:rolleyes:

I keep it trimmed up myself, but try to get to the salon (aren't there any barbershops any more?) once every 3-4 weeks so some pretty gal can make and easy 5 buck tip. (3 across the top, 1 on the sides and back, high and tight)

Tom Bombadil 05-30-07 01:47 PM

Well, chipcom, I must say that your hair looks lovely.

BluesDawg 05-30-07 02:14 PM

Sometimes my wife cuts mine. Usually I go to a solon, sometimes a barber. #2 gaurd all over in the winter. #1 in the spring and fall. No gaurd in the summer. I'm considering going to the next level and shaving my head.
I do the beard trimming myself.

Bingo, we have a winner! Same thing, No. 2 except I draft whomever's home to do mine. Wife, oldest boy, youngest boy, Mother, doesn't matter. Just need a warm body and steady hand for the back neck line.

Digital Gee 05-30-07 02:30 PM

I'm on Number 3. If I screw it up too badly, I go all the way to #1. That's hard to screw up.

SSP 05-30-07 02:33 PM

What's this "hair" you speak of?

Seriously, I keep mine (what's left) about 1 mm long, or even less in the summer. I use a standard electric barber clippers, set on their closest setting, about once a week.

And even though I shave the top of my head, I find that shaving the sides is too much work. To support the "cue ball" look requires a full-on shave job every couple of days to avoid stubble. And I'd much rather spend the time on keeping my tanned and buffed legs shaved smooth. :D

Coyote! 05-30-07 02:40 PM

Yup. . .for about 10 years now. It all started when the "center" would no longer hold and it was obvious the war was lost. Fair enough. I got myself a $12 set of clippers from Wal-Reich, removed all my raiment, went onto my back porch, set up a mirror on a nail, looked my hair in the "eye", and said, "Bald? Bald THIS ******!". Since then it's a weekly ritual, #1 setting, followed by a shower.

All the savings are magically transformed into fitness gear.

MillCreek 05-30-07 02:53 PM

I shave my head every day now, but used to use clippers to cut my own hair. My wife did the neckline along the back when I used the clippers.

Jet Travis 05-30-07 02:58 PM

Only on my legs. And only once--cuz it never came back.

Trsnrtr 05-30-07 03:00 PM

Wow, you guys still have hair?!

Stringrazor 05-30-07 03:08 PM

Another SuperCuts customer here. I hate the ritual but won't do a buzzcut.

spry 05-30-07 03:12 PM

I have so much hair all over me I just use the monkey trainer At the Cleveland Zoo.Usually I get a treat if I dont squirm in the chair.

Bill Kapaun 05-30-07 03:12 PM

Beard trimmer for everything. 2/3's face, rest on top. (I mean sides):)
