New Year's Day ride?

Isn't there a 50+ tradition on NYE? What is it?

Memory is the second thing to go, you know...

Not really a tradition as it is only for those hardened riders like yourself that will go and brave the elements- whatever the weather will throw at you. The idea is that sometime you ride on New years day. Just to prove to the world that you are man enough- Or woman enough- to Ride through the pain of the Hangover of the previous nights celebration.

If the roads are not wet, I'll take a ride on NYD. I'll be the designated driver on my Saluki as well, on New Year's Eve.

For statistical purposes, I could compare average road speed on New Year's Eve versus New Year's Day. It's a known fact that consuming black eyed peas on New Year's Day will enhance good luck, and the additional methane-propulsion should increase NYD's average speed by 2 MPH.

There are 2 NYD rides in the L.A. area. One is the Long Beach/ PCH ride with high speeds, peloton tactics and crashes, never done that one. The other is the Mount Wilson ride, which I have done at least 7 times.
This will be the 36th time it has run, and there can be 200 cyclists from racers to slow guys like me. There has been snow, ice, rain, and terrible wind up there.
The Mount Wilson ride is promoted/ led by my friend and former national team/Olympic team rider Ron Skarin, who is one tough 50pluss rider.

Glad you reminded me because the memory is the second thing to go. There used to be a bunch of folks here in St Louis who did a New Years morning ride no matter what. I'll have to check on that.

Reason I asked was I thought the NYE ride or New Year's Day ride was a Ride for the Pie thing...

(Of course, they all are, right?)

Pie is obligatory on ALL rides- But on the Traditional rides- you have to think DOUBLE pie. The diet doesn't start till 2nd Jan and you are going to need all the carbs you can get after the late night on Monday. Even if you are on a trainer down in the basement watching the Video of The LOOK.

Eugene New Year's Day ride starts at 9:00 am at the 5th Street Public Market downtown. The weather forecast looks great this year, no rain. There is always a great turn out (by Eugene standards) for this ride, 70 - 80 riders, should be fun!

Our cycling club has a NYD ride each year but with the weather prediction I may skip it....27F, snow flurries and WIND

I am riding with some friends in the morning on the usual breakfast ride. Weather prediction is much better....40F and cloudy. NYE isn't too shabby either....46F and cloudy. I may take the bike to the nearby trails and do a little riding. There is no where to buy pie in the park so I'll have to skip that part.

PARADE********** That's utterly pathetic. Even DG knows better than to offer such a lame excuse. You need to get out on your bike, post photos or your ride and copies of the pie receipt or you might get kicked off the board.

If I miss it, it will be a first... ever. I could fit in a ride between the parade which ends at 10:00 and the game which usually starts at 1:00. At least there's a 110% chance it will not rain here on New Year's Day since it hasn't for 40+ (or is it now 50+) years. No wonder California is over-populated..... "Hey Mabel, look at those people sitting in the bleachers watching the parade wearing only a t-shirt! Start packing the suitcases, we're moving to California as soon as the snow melts!".

I think it was last year that I ended up IN the parade for the Holiday Bowl. I was just out riding downtown, and ran into the parade, and sorta joined right in. I was even wearing the colors of one of the schools in the bowl game, quite by accident.

Don't watch a parade, BE the parade!

Here's what weather.com forecasts for Boston on NYD:
Tue Jan 1
Rain / Snow Showers
Max 41° / Min 26°
Precipitation 30%

All in all, not too bad for this time of year. If I can squeeze something in between the raindrops, I probably will. Maybe my New Year's resolution should be to move someplace warmer. San Diego is tempting.....
