Happy "Burns" Night.

A bit off Topic but I am riding with a couple of Scots tomorow- if they can find their bikes

Rabbie Burns and 25 january is the night that all scots celebrate Burns night. Traditional food is Haggis. Sheeps innards wrapped in a sheeps stomach. Recipes can be found here if you want to throw up.

https://www.smart.net/~tak/haggis.html#three

The one I like is Lady Login's Receipt, 1856.

Reason for posting this- Is that I have to go for a ride tomorrow and I do not fancy having a big meal tonight. And I am out with a Scot for a Burns Night Dinner. Plenty of Kilts about but I do like the Music so won't be bored. I think I will have to plead dietary requirements but have you ever upset a Pub full of Scots on Burns Night? Not a good idea.

Have to get out and ride tomorrow- mainly to work off the meal and the Hangover---- Oh-I forgot to mention the other scottish traditional Fare- Scotch Whisky. Weather is just not any thing like good for riding and as Saturday looks the better day- I'll have to try and get some miles in.

Just in case you wish to hear a spot of Burns Poetry- the link below will give you a reading. On the page click "To a haggis read by----"

https://www.electricscotland.com/burns/haggis.html

It does take some time to download but if any can offer a translation- Don't send it to me.

Unfortunately, the import of haggis from the UK is not allowed at the moment... part of the mad cow restrictions.

There is a movement to lift the ban however, so maybe next year... mousie thou art no thy lane.

Have fun...I suggest drinking a lot of water whenever you get the chance along with the food and alcohol. Alcohol will dehydrate you which makes the morning after much worse.

Do you understand what they say? I have a terrible time understanding Scotsman.

I read on the website that Haggis can be served as a dessert by pouring Drambuie over it. Maybe you could skip the Haggis and just go for the Drambuie

The Americanized Haggis would be my choice.....

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Or have a Guinness and satisfy all your nutritional requirements in one pint. Yes, heresy on this date, but preferable to anything that has to do with sheep's innards.

If you want to see a fight- Go into a Scottish pub on Burns Night and ask for an Irish drink. Even I am not that daft.

And Haggis? Not something I would want every day but the meal was good. Haggis- I could take or leave but the night was good fun.

Only downer on the night was when a bunch of yobboes tried to cause a problem by gate crashing. No fun though as The Police were called to sort them out and not 25 drunk Scotsmen.

Had dinner with two other couples last nignt. No Haggis and no Bobbie Burns readings. I think that it takes too much concentration for us Americans, even sober, to try to figure out how to pronounce all of the words and then to figure out what all the words mean and finally to figure out the meaning of it all.

The good news is that one of my friends is having a birthday on Sunday so we celebrated with a Dutch Apple pie in lieu of cake. Found an excellent local source for the home made pie that we took with us to the restaurant. It was wonderful!! We have tentatively made plans for a repeat dessert on pi night, March 14.
