, you must have taken a detour, Alice. I remember a "really big hill". How long and steep would you say it was? I think my computer said 48 miles as we got to the bottom of it, and 50.9 when I reached the parking lot.

As we neared the corner from Riverside Dr and I saw the group in front around the curve, I thought they were bypassing the hill. I said "Oh good, we're not.....". Then I saw them starting to ascend the hill and I thought "Oh noooo, we are.....!!!"

Yen maybe roadfix can tell you the grade on that climb...I don't pay too much attention to stuff like that.

I felt it, though. I had to change gear...

Good job! Now you know 50 miles is easy . . . don't you wonder why you were so concerned about it pre-ride?

Go for the metric (100 KM), then the 100 mile century, then the double metric, then the 200 mile!

You can do it!

I think it is downright mean to throw in a long, big hill right at the end of a tribute ride. I hope it didn't prevent many from finishing.

Well, the police academy where the ride started and finished is located on top of that hill.....The police provided a couple of sag wagons and I only saw one rider hop onto it near the end....

LOL! We had our own cheering squad...riding along beside us...on motorcycles...with megaphones...

"Keep pedaling!" "Excellent" "You can do it!"

roadfix and alice are right... there is no other way up but by one hill or another. The Academy is situated at the top of the hill, and no matter which route you pick, it's not easy. One of the team captains (who, unfortunately, couldn't participate) in his own words said "either way, it won't be pretty".

I saw several bikes in the back of the sag wagon. And yes the motor officers riding with us at the end up the hill cheering us on....... oh my gosh!! From start to finish this ride is unforgettable.

I see your point, but I also look at it from a different perspective.

When the killer climb is at the very end of a ride, one need not worry about saving anything for later. As my HS baseball coach used to say "this is the championship game...leave your guts on the field".

A scheduled 50 mile ride that has a 2 mile climb at the end, is a 48 mile ride in my book! A 48 mile ride followed by a 2 mile walk or taxi ride.

Yeah, but if you suffer enough on that last two miles...you may begin to see Elvis.

Not only did I see Elvis, I became Elvis. Unfortunately, it was the fat Elvis and my wife made me sleep in the car again.

Now let me see here...hmmmm. We've got a fat Elvis, with shaved legs, being forced to sleep in a car. Seems pretty normal to me.
