'Elderly' is a dirty word, in this culture.
So I expect you to do the honourable thing and wash out your mouth with soap.

I'm living as fast as I can....

I think I will be elderly when I start finding routes round the hills instead of climbing them.

It's all in your perspective.

I was staying in a hostel & had a young lady tell me that she thought I was well-preserved.

I was 29!

At just a tick under 54, I still consider myself a "young adult". As for "elderly", you can start calling me that the day after I die.

When my dad was nearing mandatory retirement (age 60) from the Air National Guard, he was on his back working on an aircraft. One of the younger Guardsmen called him an old fart, to which my father replied "watch it, this old fart is still young enough to knock you on your arse".

...The younger guy laughed and said "yeah, but I've seen you get up before, and by the time you got on your feet, I'd be half way across the hanger".

I guess old age is all in perspective.

OK, My dad is 83 and I have a half brother who is 12, at this point I have no idea what "elderly" is.

Yeah, someone tried something similar with my father when he was on a creeper under a truck and all he did was sweep the guy's feet out from under him with his leg and tell him, "While you're down there, pass me that 9/16ths wrench"

The formula for calculating "elderly" is the same as for calculating "old":

= Your Current Age + 10 Years.

A working definition for "elderly" is that point at which one has discovered a favorite chair.

I'm 57 - inside I think I'm 19, outside my body reminds me I'm 57. It's this darn body holding me back.

I looked at my old wedding photos the other day (taking in 1970). My inlaws looked old - I thought they were like 60 - 70 when I got married. I thought it through and they were 51 and 55. Thankfully we all now seem so much younger. I am regularly mistaken for being 35 - 40 (thank my good Japanese skin for that). None of my birthdays have really bothered me although when I hit 60 in 3 years, it may pinch. I'm hoping I'll acknowledge I am elderly when I hit 70 or so...

I touched on that same perspective during my recent visit with my mother, brothers and sisters. The occasion was her 79th birthday. I pointed out that when she moved our family to Florida in 1973, she was only 44. Which means that she was younger than all 6 of her children are now - 16 years younger than the oldest of us.

Now if we had been small children then, that might have been more acceptable. But my two older brothers had already served in the military and were gainfully employed, while I was just beginning college.

Everyone in the room stopped to ponder this. They had never thought of it this way, especially my mother. Even she had a hard time believing that she had been 5 years younger than her youngest daughter is now.

I believe the single most difficult thing for her to accept is that she has a child who is 60. That feels like an impossibility to her.

Hmmm. I used to feel elderly when I rode my DF. I ride my tadpole trike with joy. It's like 50 years have been shaved off my age. It's a real rush to hit 45 mph going down a hill.

Reminds me though when I hit 30. I had read and heard for so long that you were dead when you hit 30, that when I actually did turn 30 I felt really old. After that, any age hasn't bothered me.

But, I agree with DNVR that elderly should be outlawed.
