<<we send many to state prison (as opposed to county jails) who don't need to be there. >>

That's the root of the problem of the 1% incarcerated.

<<The only reason we put more people in prison than many other countries is that we prosecute crimes here.

In many countries it is not a crime to stone your daughter to death for an inappropriate date.>>

But some of the "crimes" here are so trivial and still incur prison time. Some drug-related crimes for example.

Don't forget that less than 60 years ago it was OK in some US states to beat or lynch black people and get away with it. Not all countries are as developed as the US likes to think it is. Not that I condone stoning or other barbaric forms of punishment.
Anyway, I digress from the OP. Sorry.

My wife and I just got finished watching the movie 12 Angry Men with E.G. Marshall, Jack Klugman, Jack Warden, Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, etc. It really does help put jury duty into perspective. I tend to look at it the way you do, MaddMaxx, it is something that seems to fall at the least attractive times, yet it is an important part of being a citizen. Hope you get to celebrate in ways that make the jury duty seem minor.

I've been called twice, served on a week long trail one time. I've heard they select people from voter rolls. Citizens who vote, not just registered to vote, may be more willing to do their civic duty.

Well...........another duty.............done.

Sat in the jury room all day and then the judge called us all out. It would appear that the defendant has obtained another lawyer. A do over for the state...........thankyou very much for you time.

Oh the trial.............DWI taken to the jury level.

As I watched the films today and listened to the other jurors I reaffirmed my thinking........Our system is far from perfect but I cannot think of another place that I could live where it would be better.

Oh.......the 35th annaversary dinner which was held a night early was exquisite.
