Its not that cold here so I got away with not having my gloves with me.
. I get looks from people who can't believe that I want to ride in December. I think a ride on Christmas or new years would be great. a riding partner would be great but not all that necessary. Lots of people here in Hot Springs Ar are bike riders, but either they leave me in the dust or they still have training wheels on their bike.

what is the temp there in hot ??? springs here in pa it was a warm 40 on sunday last i did about 20 miles same here no one to ride with i am waiting for my brother in law to retire i rarely get passed on the trails but road riders can blow me away i ride all winter in pa as long as its dry and above 30 deg worked outside all my life numb from the ears down i guess

Amen to riding being a "gift". I figure its like putting money in your "Health Bank" and we can never be too healthy. Its a great investment in our own well-being. If you don't believe that, just go sit and people-watch at your local Wal-Mart for awhile and see all the overweight folks there who have a hard time even getting from the car to the store - a LOT of them aren't even in their 60's yet and they can hardly move. Any money and time we spend on this hobby of ours is money and time very well spent as far as I'm concerned.
Merry Christmas from the MN Tundra where today we are going to get our first blizzard of the season. I'm going to hit the recumbent exercycle in the basement and watch an action movie.

I turned 65 last October. I used to say "when I retire I am going to ride every day. A trip to the operating room in mid October 2007 slowed that down somewhat. I had a quintuple bypass and a aortic valve replacement, and my doctor wouldn't let me ride for a year.

I lost my tandem partner about 5 years ago. My wife has gotten so big she doesn't want to be seen in a sausage suit. I guess I need a new partner.

I live at the top of a hill, so my New Years resolution this year is to ride up that hill without having to regear my bike. The bike has a 12-25 cassette. I used to ride it to work, so I geared it to go fast.

I've been trying to find some WARM gloves for winter riding but haven't found them yet. The ones I have keep my hands (fingers) warm for 30 minutes, then my fingers are cold. Hard to work the brakes or shifters when my fingers get cold. Seems that the circulation in the extremities decreases as we age. :( I've tried ski gloves, gortex gloves, and so-called warm gloves with a liner. Nothing works.
So, I'm asking you 65+ folks what gloves you use for riding when the temperatures get below about 35-40F (2-4C).

I'm hoping to be back on the bike within two months and, in the meantime, will enjoy posting to this forum legally.

Well Pal how you doing?

You back to riding?

Remember, try to keep the side with the wheels down!

I am sorry to hear of you trouble, I guess I have been lucky in not crashing. I have had issues with a I. T. band on the right knee, but so far it's been ok since. I am in Arizona so the weather is quite different with regard to humidity anyway. We have kids and grand kids there, and when we visit them I can sure tell the difference. Good luck and get well soon.

I use "lobster " gloves i.e. two finger gloves. But as we used to say on the ski trails, if your hands are cold, put on a hat. Fingers and toes are the first parts to feel cold because your body is getting cold. I don't ride much when the temperature is less than 25 fahrenheit. I wear a helmet liner or a face mask, and a helmet cover I wear either silk or merino wool as a bases layer and vaious layers of wool and fleec then a windproof outer layer. I don't think age has anything to do with cold fingers.

I'm tempted to get these but is it "appropriate" attire for the 65+ cyclist?

If people say something tell'em to look the other way!!

Life's great, enjoy!

Oops, I should have been more specific. I don't wear white bibs.

At this stage of the game I wear what ever I want. When I was younger and wanted to impress others, the need to excel dictated what I did and what I wore. Now I could care less what others think. As long as I don't embarrass the wife too bad, I am ok.

Burr 02-13-10 05:51 PM

Glad you said "Too Bad"

Enjoy life my friend.

dr1445 02-14-10 07:40 AM

signing on today, i was old slow and in the way, no i am just older, slow and in the way. i have been riding since oct 09, getting in about 50-60 freezing cold miles a week but i am thankful the roads have been mostly snow free here in ct. i am riding an ancient 1972 puch, 8spd triple with flat and bars and a trek 800 snow bike.

Burr 02-14-10 08:14 AM

DR you are doing just great.
Riding in the winter 50-60 miles, that's great. Make me feel bad I live in 90 degree weather and I only get in 40-60 miles on a good week.

dr1445 02-14-10 10:03 AM

hey burr, my other home is dipolog city, philippines, we will be over for the month of nov this year.

Burr 02-14-10 05:13 PM

Cool, I live just north on Manila in Guiguinto, Bulacan.
Wife's a retired Land-banker, she's a CPA and consults to local banks and Co-Op's. Four hours a day.

dr1445 02-14-10 07:43 PM

i will be sending my bianchi advantage [hybrid] over to the philippines by forex, i reckon finding a bike to fit me would be near impossible in the provinces. any thoughts on shipping aside from forex?

Rocky1405 02-16-10 09:51 AM

Hi: I'm from MN but ride in FL during Jan and Feb. I've found that Pearl Ozumi sells a pair of gloves that works well for me down to those temps of yours. I bought them last season and I think they cost about 70 bucks. I know that's spendy but if you are going to ride in cold weather on a regular basis, you have to spend the money and get the good gear or its no fun at all to be riding in.
good hunting!!
Rocky

Getting over sickness

The golden years they say. I wonder who came up with that?
I got an infection in my sinuses and just can't seem to shake it. Been through two series of antibiotics, now the ear, nose and throat guy wants to operate on me. He took a CT Scan and said it's either that or put up with the sinus head aches, and feeling like a dish rag. Had to cancel my bike race next month as I won't have time to train for it. It's two day 100/60 mile MS event in Florence AZ that my son and I were going to do. Dang, I waned to beat him too. I sure hope this all works out for the best. It seems it takes longer to get over things, the older I get.
