66 here. Closing quickly to 67. Back on a bike after a 12 yr layoff. Bought a new Trek FX 7.3. Put over 300 miles on it in the first 2 weeks. I have been on the roads since 4/76 running. Total miles run 71,400+ . Started riding a road bike in the eraly 80's to cross train. Then went to a mt bike. In the early 90's got a hybrid and rode till '98. Not sure why I stopped. I use to ride a lot when I would get injured from running too much. Pretty much injury free for 12 yrs. Currently have a nagging foot injury which motivated me to get back on a bike. Had my '93 hybrid fixed up--then foolisly rode a new Trek 7.3. Bought it immediately. I am amazed that I have acclimated to the bike so quickly. Did a 50 miler last Sunday. Felt great. Use to run 50 mile+ ultramarathons. Riding is a lot easier. Thanks for letting me share. Nick

Staying Young At Heart, at 65+
Been thinking a little lately on my age, 69. And how people say I don't act or look my age. And I don't feel like I am 69 either. So, what is happening.
Here are a few things I am doing, that may or may not have and impact on me pushing the aging process back. One thing comes to mind, and it is kind of funny too. I don't hang with people my age!!!!!!:D In the sport of motorcycles I am hanging with 20 and 30 year olds. In other words, do young things, you will be around younger people. I don't feel out of place either. Here I am at a racetrack in Florida, my riding/traveling partner was 25 opposed my at that time 68. http://www.cehoward.net/young1.jpg I dress young..Jeans and cowboy boots and tennis when I am working out. I might put on a pair of shoes about 1 or 2 times a year. Just lately I started putting on suits, and dress pants and that is only to go to church..;) I act silly too. :D I don't worry about down the line too much, because nobody knows when this gift of life will end.. People say "save for a rainy day"...Sheesh, with me, everyday is raining...:D Lastly, I love to throw my Raleigh Competition on my shoulder and run up 5 flights of stairs after getting off the subway. That draws attention, not that I am looking for attentiion, but the attention keeps me pumped up to keep doing it. And that "doing it" is the key to staying young at heart at pass 65.. Plus,I got a young healthy wife too, that helps!!:D |

That "injury free" came from you being super active.. Only way to go...;) When I grow up, I wanna be just like you!!:thumb: |
Here is my first post. Turned 65 today, rode 65 miles. Best sprint after 50 miles was 23.6 mph for 1/2 mile, then 21 mph for 1 1/2 miles. Wanted to post earlier but waited until i was actually 65.
|
So you ride the LA River? I rode it a many a day from the top to LB and back in to the wind all the way then up hill to Upland.
Welcome and post often "Old Man"! |
Yes i am an old man. They have repaved the Rio Hondo/L.A. riverbed this last three weeks so i have been going over to SGRB from Firestone north to HWY 39 over Santa Fe Dam. It is a good work out, uphill then into the wind coming back. It has improved my endurance. They are redoing the lower half of the SGRB but have not done the worse part of the trail. I will get back on the L.A. trail this coming week to see if it is finished. Usually i go to Shore line Village or over to Seal Beach. Next on my list is to do 100 miles.

Listen up, LIFE BEGINS AT 65!!! |
Well, had a nice ride today. My plan is to slowly increase my speed so i can join a club and sustain 20+ mph for a long distance. Hit 25.2 mph in the first sprint and degraded from there. Hope everyone is well.

If I was 50 again I'd take up cyclocross racing.
Now all I can do is watch and cheer on the riders. :o  |
Went 40 miles today. I don't have a HR monitor but i recite sentences to check how much i am working at the moment. Was hitting 24.7 mph and going 22 mph for 10 miles and was at less than 85% max HR. Did 15 miles in 45 minutes which for me is a first. At no time did i have to gasp between words. The highest speed was 29.7 mph. Bought a computer last month and it is helping a lot for my improvement. Sunny, windy and 74 degrees. Felt really tired last Thursday and Friday like i was out of power. I hope to keep those days to a minimum. I chalk it up to being 65.

Doing good Rat, keep turning the cranks.
Wish I was riding with you. |
Ron, how old are you?
You still riding something? |
I'm 65 and ride this several times a week (old picture).
http://web.me.com/ronhorne/Site/Rons...s/IMGP0712.jpg Speaking of "old" --- We got back from a 3 week cross country trip (by car) last week. My wife had never been west of the Mississippi and wanted to see the other half of the country. Three weeks off the bike is awful. My speed is WAY down, my climbing is bad, and my breathing is still not right. I guess another week or two and maybe I'll be back to "normal". I HOPE!!!!! |
Great, nice ride.
That's a nice picture. Keep Cranking |
I belong here, I'm so old that I automatically get senior discounts even though I ask them to card me.

Burr’s great return to the Peddles.
Temps have been close to a hundreds and the humidity the 70’s but today I got my but on the bike again. NO MORE EXCUSES. 2 mile course, flat a little wind and lots of room. Temp 95 humidity 68 and pure sun shine. Music PodRunner, long sleeve white pullover shirt (Mandatory per doc and wife) 5 laps and a break for Gatorade then 5 more lap About a 70 cadence 15 mph. I’ll get batteries for computer today and fix Heart Rate Monitor. |
I'm going to post this today but I just found I have a ride thread so I'll post my rides over there from now on. want to see my rides, go there.
Off Day Ride, After doing my weight lifting routine I did a 14 mile city ride between trucks and cars, people cussing throwing cigarettes butts out of windows and baby dippers. Great ride but I was a tired when I got home and my arms were falling off. Used my city bike, mountain bike with 1” slicks. Made five stops alone the way and spent three hours all together. Ready and primed for tomorrow real ride. Schwinn GS721840 City Bike REI Randonee 99E423 Touring Bike Diamondback Expert T6T 04517 Road Bike |
My hamstrings usually are very tight about three quarters into my rides(usually 40 to 58 miles). My feet would get hot, numb after about 3 hours. I would unclip and wiggle my feet around with only minimum relief. Once, out of frustration, i extended my whole leg straight back while moving, it seem to work very well. I forgot about it and just put up with the pain. I did this on my Birthday ride towards the last miles and it helped. Now i thought what if i do this as part of my warm up and during my rides, would it work? Since i want to do a Century would this help keep me from getting tight? The answer is yes. I tried it on my 57 mile ride on Monday and was not tight at all. What i do is while doing about 18 to 20 mph i unclip on foot, extend it straight back, rotate my hip a little which lifts me off the saddle, balance on the opposite leg then do a scorpion from my knee to my foot and flex about 10 times as i glide. I can also rotate my foot and find relief. I just switch sides after regaining speed. I tried this into a 15 to 20 mph head wind and did not get very tired. I kind of feel like an ice skater gliding on one foot. Tried it again today and did 52 miles and my hammies are not tight.

Glad that works for you Rat.
I haven't get had that problem and over here don't guess I will just going around a loop. Our bodies are wonderful if we just take care of them. |
Burr, i feel for you. I was in Manilla for a couple of weeks in 1966, felt like the Sun was closer than anywhere else. Was in the Orient for 3 years and the humidity was just oppressive. Throw in those crazy drivers, Good luck. Stay safe.
