I lived above Mount Baldy
Use to kill me riding up there from Upland.

BillyBob1 09-06-10 06:33 AM

I've been absent here for a long while. On Dec. 26th, 2009 I was hit by a car while riding my bike. I was told that it was my fault for swerving into the path of the car. I had a concussion, third degree separation of the acromio-clavicular joint, road rash, etc. One night in the hospital and I have done well. As for it being my fault part, I am totally amnesic to the event. I have resisted riding (actually afraid to since it was apparently my fault), but I am now ready to buy a new bike, this time not a road bike, but a full suspension mountain bike and I will ride only on our farm. The Trek Madone road bike I was riding was in worse shape than I was -- it was in four separate pieces with the seat and attachments twenty feet from the rest of the bike. Luckily, the car hit my rear wheel and not me directly or I would be pushing up daisies by now. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=168482

So happy you are back. Any pics of the car damage?

So happy you are back.

We have had SO many accidents reported on BFN and here in the Denver area lately. Serious and fatal road accidents. Each one confirms my decision several years ago to keep my bicycling on our great bicycle trails (MUPS), where I may have to go slower, and may have a greater chance of colliding in a minor accident, but less chance of tangling with a car in a critical injury/fatal accident.

I fully understand your wanting to ride on your farm - and perhaps other mtn biking areas?

I can't get the picture to display??

BillyBob1 09-06-10 09:06 AM

The accident occurred about 1/4 mile from home near Griffin GA. The only damage to the car was that I took out their side view mirror (about $700) and they filed with my insurance. My lawyer thinks I should go after them, but I haven't made a decision and probably won't. IF it was my fault and it seems to have been after talking to two eye witnesses, then I think it doesn't make sense to go after the driver. Was she texting? Then it might, but I don't know and we have two years from accident to make a decision.

DnvrFox, i used to try to use that reasoning in Golf to see how i was doing, think Tiger at 5 foot 8 inches.
Tomorrow i am going to attempt a 76 mile trip with 3375 feet of elevation gain. I have not tried any mountains yet but will try one tomorrow.

I waited the extra day and instead of leaving from my home i drove to a rest stop just above Foothill. 33 miles and 3000 feet elevation gain. Made it up to the Shack but i need better gearing, my lowest is 42/24. I am glad i did not ride from my home, it was hard enough just doing the 33 miles. Really good weather, warm but not hot with a few cool breezes. I had bought two insulated water bottles and they worked very well, cool drinks all the way to the top.

No, but other "attachment" pics do display. Same error code. Don't worry about it.

DnvrFox 09-07-10 06:15 PM

I'll try it on another computer tomorrow. I'm having some trouble with cookies on this computer. ???

Strange, I don't worry.

I need help/suggestions from the 65+ group

Because of home renovations this past winter (eating out way too often) and a three week vacation in May I managed to pack on 15 unwanted pounds. Since the end of May I have increased the mileage of my rides and increased the frequency of my rides. I'm riding 35-40 miles, every other day (you know ride-rest-ride-rest, etc., but for some reason I haven't been able to drop more than a pound or two. My wife and friends say I look good for my age and its just part of getting older to not be able to lose weight easily. I have a hard time convincing myself that its all age related. When I was in my 50s I could lose weight fairly easily. I watch what I eat, keep a food diary, etc.
I'd like to do a couple of metric centuries in the next month or so but I can't see myself hauling this extra weight around for 62+ miles, unless I ride at a slow pace and do the 62 miles in 6+ hours.

What works for you?

10 Wheels 09-09-10 04:38 PM

101 miles in 94* Temps in Sunshine today.
Up your miles, eat less. Young man.

I still look like a pot belly stove.

DnvrFox 09-09-10 04:39 PM

I hate to say this, as I don't want to hex what has been happening to me, but I am within a few pounds of my weight in 1998 when I rode the Ride the Rockies. I have lost about 18 pounds recently.

We have almost stopped eating bread - a loaf lasts my wife and myself about 1 month, and when we do, it is 1/2 slice of whole wheat. We have reduced portion size, and are eating fish and skinless chicken breast, and a lot of fruit and veggies. I have kept my exercise up with swimming and bicycling, now at about 150 miles per week and 4-5 hours of swimming.

My belt is soon going to need a new hole!!

Anyway, that has been working for me. My wife is amazed.

I've been reading this forum for 3 or 4 years (mainly the pro cycling thread) but just discovered this thread. I am 70. I have some questions that have been bugging me. Up to a few years ago I was a nationally ranked age group runner, but due to injuries have had to give it up and am now interested in bike racing. However, based on casual observation, it seems as though the bike community has limited opportunities for us (OLDER FOLKS) to race against people our age. It seems that MOST races (all types) have 50+ as the oldest group. I have noticed that the running community has many more 65+ runners then 65+ cyclist. Any suggestion on what can be done, what is available, training methods, etc. etc. Anyone interested in training together. I live in the Annapolis, MD area. I am open to any type of racing all though time trials sound appealing.

We have some nationally competitive racers - in their 60's - in this forum. However, they post their racing exploits on other threads in the 50+ forum, not on the 65-85+ threads.

A couple of screen names:

Hermes
AlleghenyJet (or maybe Allegheny Jet)

Hermes just came back from the nationals, and has an extensive thread just recently posted.

You will find this fascinating. Read the thread here:

Finally, lost 6 pounds in the last two days. Riding in the heat, rode 51 miles each day and reduced my dinner to home made goo plus fruit. 185 this pm, need to get to 178 or so. If i can weather the holidays and get to about 175 in January i will be extremely happy.

Burr 09-26-10 12:38 AM

Some of the water will be in solid form, with some single malt whiskey around it to make sure there is nothing bad in the water. More water, less sugar. 183.5 pounds this am after another ride in the heat.
