Heavy snow just south and west of Denver, some snow at my house (6,000 feet), but it melts upon hitting the ground. Walking/swimming today.

It was overcast and 40ish out here on the Western Slopes but we did not have wind. I got in a pretty decent 30 mile ride. Of course the Sun came out as soon as I got home. Tomorrow looks like it will be good and I hope to get out by 8 for a longer ride. :)

Did 66 miles today for my Birthday ride. Was sitting on the fence about going. Still recovering for the ER on the 12/13 of this month. Thought i might as well go and try. Glad i did. Did not go very fast, avg 16 mph. Hope to get in more rides.

Phil85207 05-24-11 06:01 PM

LAriverRat Great job That's a good pace.

Yeah I qualify, still like folk singers.
A little inspiration on getting out on the bike.

My left knee has been bothering me for a few weeks and riding and doing a little at home PT hasn't helped. Feels a lot like my right knee did before the surgery I had a few years ago. :( When I got home from today's ride I called the sports med doc who did knee #1 and made an appointment for a knee checkup. I'll be limping and "suffering" till June 22. Got my fingers crossed. :o
At least riding doesn't aggravate the condition.

I suspect I am old enough at 84 though I may not be entirely welcome as I am presently waiting delivery of an electric bike, a Busettii "Northrock" and it's going to be a "step-through" (used to call them women's bikes). My excuse is that I've not ridden for about 6 years and since then have had a double by-pass plus two dislocated shoulders from downhill skiing accidents. Perhaps I should have gotten a tricycle! Anyway I can't wait for my Busettii to arrive all the way from sunny California to me here in foggy Nova Scotia (Canada). Once it has arrived, if anyone should be interested, I will report from time to time on my progress. My wife, Thelma, is in an electric-power wheelchair so we hope to have wild races through the streets of Halifax at dizzying speeds of anything up to 5 m.p.h..

You are most welcome here. Please share your successes and challenges.

I just visited Halifax - what a beautiful (and hilly) town. An electric assist would be really helpful.

Please join in whenever. We 65+'rs are very tolerant and appreciate anyone who figures out how to ride, no matter the situation.

After nearly a month off the cycle I got to ride today 66 miles. What with some landscaping at home for the wife, and her health issues with COPD, the nebulizer stopped working, then the Oxygen generator went on the fritz, it been a little crazy around here.
Very pleasant day for a ride today, though it did warm a bit, but it was nice to get back on the bike. My legs are letting me know about the layoff though

OK, I'm offical. You guys don't look so old now.

Welcome, It's all uphill from here! :)

RonH 06-06-11 01:36 PM

Except for the downhill sections of the road. :)

lapazmike 06-07-11 01:03 AM

@ theri_
As Thema has the a more stable ride, maybe you could mount the video camera on her chair to film you and your new ride through the wilds of Canada. If no video, maybe just some stills. Welcome.
Do you have an annual moose or caribou trek through your area?

Does being 64 3/4 count? I'll come back later if it doesn't.

Nearest birthday - as in in surance age - works for me. We need all the help we can get.

John_V 06-12-11 07:37 PM

Good, because I am trying to find out what others in my age group do as far as riding and training. I have been riding for 1 1/2 years on my hybrid and on my road bike for only 8 months. Since then, I have put on close to 2,000 miles on the road bike and have over 2,500 on the hybrid that I bought in July of last year. The rest of the time was on the comfort bike my wife gave me for my 63rd birthday, which I gave to my brother who's 61.

Since I have had my road bike, I have done several long distance charity rides, including the MS 150 last month. I try and get in 20 miles a day and 30 to 40 miles a day on the weekends, unless I am training for a ride. I'm not the fastest rider on my cycling team. I normally try and keep an 18 mph pace, but I have kept a faster one (20+) but only for about 3 or 4 miles at a time.

I'm not sure what most of the other riders in this age group are doing, but I have read some posts that pretty much put me to shame. It really doesn't bother me that others go faster and for longer periods, I attribute that to them riding for more years than I have. I would like to know what you guys do, as I am always looking to better myself in anything that I do.

DnvrFox 06-12-11 08:42 PM

I think you will find as many and varied reasons for and types of bicycling in the 65+ thread as you would find in the 50+ forum.

At almost 72, I am interested in all 'round fitness. I swim, do a variety of resistance exercises, stretch, walk, ride, etc. My current situation is that my wife has a chronic syndrome - terrible post-herpetic-neuralgia, which requires my physical presence a lot. I do not do long rides, nor do I have any interest whatsoever in speed, competition, etc.

Tomorrow I plan on:

1. At about 5:30 am, - stretching - a variety of things I do that I learned in recovering from my L-4; L-5 fusion this last October.

2. A variety of resistance exercises - planks, bridges, pushups (I have a goal of 72 pushups in a row by my 72nd birthday and am now at 66), bar bell work, squats, etc. I have a complete gym in my basement, and vary the exercises from day-to-day and also take rest days.

3. A 20 mile ride - tomorrow I will go on my hilly ride. I go at my own speed, and like to hear the birds sing and "smell the roses." I have wonderful MUPS - hundreds of miles without any cars or crossings.

4. A swim - I do about 40 minutes of lap swimming doing the crawl, breast and back strokes. 4-5 times per week.

5. I try to walk several miles during the week.

I will finish about 10:00 am, about the time my wife finishes her aquaerobics. Her PHN gets much worse in the pms, and that is when I am needed.

I am very, very pleased with my current exercise program. I have a lot of muscle, good endurance, etc.

In the past I have done such things as "Ride the Rockies" - but that is no longer anywhere in my desires. I have never ridden in a pace line, and have absolutely no desire to do so. I ride solo and love it.

I think you will find others having very different goals and activities than I do.

It's all good.

RonH 06-13-11 07:06 AM

I walk, do a few exercises with stretch bands and hand weights, and ride. My riding starts out slowly in the spring and I add miles and hills in early May. I'm currently up to my 38 mile route which includes 15 miles of hills. I hope to be doing 20 miles of hills by summer's end. Then when the days get cooler (October-November) I back off on the hills and just do miles. I don't own a trainer so try to ride as much as possible through the winter.
This plan may get derailed next week when I see the sports med doc about my knee :o (see a few posts above for that story).
