Busy, busy!
Haven't been riding or posting much recently - I'm also semi-retired and very busy.
This weekend run the Austin Marathon, then Thursday off to Ethiopia to go boating in crocodile-infested waters on a job. From Ethiopia direct to Madrid where I have reserved a mountain bike to do a 30-day tour of Spain and Portugal, then back here just in time to ride the MS150 from Houston to Austin - something I've wanted to do for years. Then there'll be a month's worth of work to catch up on:eek: I'm a youngster (69) compared with some of you folks out there, but I'm still amazed that I had time to work full-time for 40+ years, raise a family, maintain a home, etc., etc. We all must slow down a lot as we age! I'll try to post pics etc of the Spain/Portugal ride on here. |
John, You Have a Great Time.

Good ride today, beside the flat tire. By the way just in case any of you happen to loose your tire levers as I did today, you can use the quick change skewer spin off thingy to remove the tire from the rim. Just be careful not to get overly rough with it so as not to break it. I must have left my levers in the desert somewhere when I had my last flat. No harm, I have new ones now.
I just wish I could get my HR back up to where it was before my thyroid abandoned me. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/68642299 |
Got off early to get a ride in before the rain comes from California. Shorter ride than normal as I have some honey-dos to get done today also.

I see your point.
IF: -you don't smoke, -keep your weight at least a little in check, -stay away from excessive mind-altering substances, -don't smoke, -have a decent genetic heritage, -have a little disposable income, -appreciate what you have instead of whining about what others have and you don't, -have a sense of humor, and -don't smoke, then 50 is the new 30. That would make 65 the new 50. So it's all good. I am voting for you for PRESIDENT!! :thumb: |
Well I took on Usery Pass today and won. I got a new cassette, a 12-36 to help my climbing and for sure it made it easer. I used all of the gears when the grade was over 5%. I need an edge on the hills till the doctors can find why my hart won't rev up like it used to. The Tour de Phoenix will be here in 4 weeks and it's gonna be tough going unless I can get the HR up.

Now that I'm in this catagory, I've decided it's time for a shorter stem on my road bike; so my stoker and I went to The Chicago Cycle Swap and found one. http://www.activetrans.org/swap

OK here goes. My wife and I, being in our 70's and less than 100% healthy, have been riding Schwinn World GSE bicycles for the past several years and our goal is to ride 2000 miles each year; 25 - 30 miles at a time. The bikes have been good to us (not perfect) and the only big problem is the battery; life expectancy and availability. We have two on order now (02/28/11) and we'll see how long it takes to get them. They are technically power-assist and require pedaling for the motors to kick in. The motors take much of the strain off our knees. It's sort of like riding a stationary bike with minimum (no zero) resistance.
We like paved, level and shady trails but will accept two out of the three. We like rails-to-trails and any trail in Florida in January! On the down side, after approximately 12,000 miles of riding last month we both fell on wet sidewalks in Florida and it took several weeks for the abrasions to heal and several thousand $$ of dental work for my wife who took a header. But in about four more weeks we will be out there again shooting for that 2000 miles! Richard and Anne |
Good for you, and welcome. My wife and I are in our 70's also.
Sorry about the crash!! That's tough, but glad you are recovering. |

Another Usery Pass a little faster. Tomorrow I will do a trial run on the Tour de Phoenix (Mesa)

Richard that sounds great. Glad to see you riding.
I guess I'm the kid around here at 69 but I crank.Wife's in her 50's and she rides a little and walks a little. I do 20 miles three times a week on a close course. Keep Cranking! |
No, I'm the kid around here. I'm only 66. :o

I rode 23 miles today with The Elmhurst Bicycle Club.
http://www.elmhurstbicycling.org/ Boy am I glad I bought that shorter stem on Saturday. Made a big difference to my hands and wrists and neck. I'm between you two at 68. |
Well I did the Tour de Phoenix (Mesa) route today. (not the event) This is one of my usual routs but in reverse. It's much harder this way. Head winds on Shay Bulv. and the back side of Usery Pass at the end. I need to get in some training for sure. Losing some weight wouldn't hurt either. I have 4 weeks to improve. I will say my HR did improve some on this ride. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/70850896

Seeing what other elders, even the youngsters at 65, are doing is encouraging and helps morale. I'm looking forward to the start of my cycling season.
Oh, that was a bit of bump. We just had one of our daily earthquakes. Usually I don't feel them. I did that one. Comes from living on the Ring of Fire so no big deal. |
`Recovery ride to stretch the legs a little.
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/71180883 I forgot to take the Garmin off the bike and charge it last night and so I wait for it to charge. |

Well, I was sick in February, so forgot to post ----- Happy 65 to me on Feb 3rd.......
|
Out of commission for a while while I got my allergies under control. Everything is blooming here except the citrus, then I wear a mask when I ride. I was well into my 60s before I ever had an allergy so I guess I've been lucky on that score. I was hopping that I would dodge the bullet but... I wasn't going to go the full loop but was feeling good so I did. I was really tired by the time I got back. I guess a person should go with there first impulse. Anyway here it is. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/72338574
