Bob, Enjoy the 20th.
Stay active |
Had a nice 22 mile ride to Stone Mtn and back today. My breathing wasn't *off* like I thought it would be. :)

Can I rant a little? I fell off my bike while climbing a mountain and looking over the side of the road and drifted on to the shoulder. Down I went with the result of a sore ankle. That was two months ago. I tried to ride this AM and my ankle is still not being nice to me. I know I'm old but crap!!! This is pissing me off and I just needed to rant a little.

assuming it not all puffed up and swollenup, you might try sleeping with a heating pad on it for a few days...I have a knee that gets sore and a few days with the pad takes care of it..but,if itis swollen up it probably has internal bleed and the heat is not a good thing

Try some BenGay and a hot wet towel!

There is no swelling or other sigh of trauma. There is only pain in the joint when I either put a stand on a slanted surface or try to unclip. One of my daughters is a RN and thinks it will be OK if I take it easy on it. She suggested very strongly to stay off the bike till it's OK. She knows if I get on the bike I won't take it easy. ( She's known me for 51 Years)

They might as well remove this Thread since it didn't take long for it to be corrupted. BTW I just turned 73 and my wife and I bike 2000 miles each year on our Schwinn World Electric bikes which have to be pedaled to get the motor to run.

BTW, when you fell, did you HOLLER the senior citizen's cry??? The senior citizen's war cry "HELP, I HAVE FALLEN, AND I CAN'T GET UP" http://www.cehoward.net/badteeth%5b1%5d.gif |
mission accomplished! 20+ mi. ride to celebrate my 65th b-day! I feel pretty good, did a protein shake before and a 'recovery' shake after. next month the goal is 25 mi., then Oct reserved for roaming around the mountains.

Not sure why you're drinking the protein shakes but they probably aren't helping. Your body needs cards for energy. Try oatmeal and fruit or whatever carb breakfast you like. Save the shakes for when you take some time off the bike. |
Today was ride #3 since the knee doc said I was good to go. I had planned on doing my regular route including a lap or two around Stone Mtn but that plan failed. We went out with friends last night and I didn't eat enough nor did I eat the right kind of food for riding. They picked the place. :( After a few miles I realized I didn't have enough energy/carb reserves so decided to alter my route. :o

well actually it's a 'meal replacement' shake before, it has some protein and a lot of carbs, not many calories. Clearly the protein after a workout is a good thing, per my research. The protein in the morning also seems to be recommended because of what goes on inside muscles during sleep. I'll investigate more on the subject of carbs before workout. My previous experience (many years ago as a long distance runner) was that carb loading was good the couple days before a run, but the jury was out on pancakes, eggs, or whatever for breakfast before a morning run. Some said yes, some said no, some said they put up with the digestive problems during a run, others said 'Why?'. Thanks for the note.

It was always controversial. But with the big jogging craze and the Jim Fixx and Dr. Cooper aerobics books, there was a lot of experimenting.

I went on the ride this AM (4AM) and it wasn't a thing of beauty. To much to soon after being off the bike for so long. The Ankle is not real happy but it's only a little sore if I move it the wrong way. I guess I'll give it a little more time. Grrrrrrrr. It sure felt good to get back on the bike again though.http:

Did someone say something about a senior center here in Parker?

I saw the knee doc today. He said my tan lines are fading from riding on the trainer ;) so he said I could get outside and ride, but to take it easy -- whatever that means. So I'll be heading out to Stone Mtn tomorrow. This will be my first ride since July 19. If you see some old fart riding really slow, that'll be me. :p My brother-in-law had a knee done and started out from the getgo walking 10-15 miles a day right out of the hospital (or so he says). Now his knee is frozen with scar tissue and he's in pain day and night. Can't do a thing in his retirement. 'Nuff said. Enjoy your rides and hope to see you riding. |
This is old hat to me. Had arthroscopic surgery on the right knee in 2008. No big deal. I bounced back in a few weeks.
The left knee had the same procedure on July 21 so again no big deal. I'm already closing in on my pre-surgery fitness level. I was riding 27-37 miles 3-4 days a week before the surgery. I was up to 45 minutes on the trainer after 2 weeks -- 55 minutes when the doc said I was good to go. Been back on the road for a week. |
Is everyone on vacation? No one (other than me) riding?

It has rained for four months so I get to ride between the drops from time to time. I try to ride my trainer but that's no fun.
I lift three days a week and ride my city bike between rides locally. |
About 4 weeks ago I treated myself to a set of 4.5" diameter Kreitler Challenger rollers. I've been recovering from double hernia surgery and doing some low resistance spinning on a set of cheap PVC rollers I'd picked many years ago at Performance bike. They were very noisy and rough riding. The Kreitlers are expensive, but silky smooth and very quiet. They also have a simple tooless wheelbase adjustment system that doesn't require removal of the front drum. Well worth the money IMO.
|
Glad to hear you're recovering ok. :)
Enjoy the rollers. :thumb: |
