Its permanent. The house we're "renting" (really cheap rent from friends) is temporary. We'll be living here while we look for a house to buy or a place to build. Closest bike trail is 11 miles away and my favorite is 22 miles away. We'd like to move within a mile or so of the favorite trail.
I'll keep you posted.

Here's the view out the front door.

Beautiful. Alligators?

Hey Dnvr and RonH: Don't slow down now - you're an inspiration to the rest of us, and I would get depressed if I thought slow down was inevitable in the next couple of years (I'm 23 months behind Dnvr)! Just think of all the things on your Bucket List and all the things you can add to it- like Penh's December weekend of 100 Km on the bike followed by a half marathon (the next day, thank goodness)! And you don't have to go to Cambodia - heck, it's all downhill from Grandfather Mountain to Miami, and getting warmer all the way, too, at this time of year.

I 'specially envy Denver all those push-ups: I seem to spend too much of the time battling with the dang computer to do much of that stuff.

Gotta keep them pedals cranking and show the young ones a thing or two!

Happy Thanksgiving all - don't eat too much Turkey, and do do a Turkey Trot (I don't know how many cities have them, but there's for sure one in Austin and another in Ft.Worth).

John

How many of us in the 65+ demographic use Strava? I live in a small town (whole county is maybe 30K folks) and the local segments have very few 65+. Not that I'm going to go out an kill myself on a segment to get ahead of "Joe", but a man has to have something to do in his spare time. I do look at the 200+ lb. group and i'm not at the bottom. Heck, I'd be pretty good in the 65+/200+ collection of folks.

DnvrFox 11-28-12 11:28 AM

No Strava for me.

I added the Cyclemeter app for my iPhone and am still trying to figure it out. Got todays ride results and now they're gone. All I can find are the speed and elevation graphs. :o

Burr 11-29-12 09:21 PM

I ride a closed course of 20 miles, flat but windy. I turn 66 rpms and that's that. I have about ten turns but they are wide and I have to watch for cars in two roads.

Life's great, keep cranking!!

Angkor Wat 100K and Half Marathon

Since John Berry mentioned the Angkor Wat 100K and Half Marathon, I thought I'd give you a report. There were about 630 participants in the bike race and 6,000 in the Half Marathon. Cambodians were represented among the winners in both races, which we look at as a great thing as 'sport' is becoming more and more popular over here, and a good bike is generally not affordable.

I met my personal goals of (1) finishing, and (2) not finishing last. My time - on the Cannondale R1000 with flat bars - was 4-hours and 3-minutes, nothing to write home about, but considering the very rough roads, not too bad for a 66-year old. I was the second-oldest in the race, with a Cambodian guy from California, aged 76, also finishing. Some folks with mountain bikes also did well, because of the bad roads.

Earlier in the week I did a nice training ride up the newly-improved road to Bokor Mountain, made famous in the movie City of Ghosts, starring James Kahn, Depardieu, and Matt Dillon. The first 20K all uphill 1,000-meters (over 3,000 feet), and the second 10K up and down. This will become a 'must' bicycling destination for like-minded tourists in future, but on the day we did it, there were only two other bikers. I'm proud to say that my 12-year old son also made it up, perhaps the first 12-year old to do it.

First cold spell of the year over here and I am looking for something else to do other than Cough and sneeze. Flu bug has hit the family and I am the one that is not feeling too bad. The bike got as far as the house yesterday but the 15mph wind made me see sense. 25F this morning and it has started raining so I think it is a day to go to the "Mall" and keep the grandkids amused.

House and garden looking OK and I just want to ride. Weather against me or is it that I just wimping out? Don't care really as Plenty of days left before the Chistmas holiday and the chance to show every one else how much fitness you lose by not riding.

Your age is catching up with you!! :)

RonH 12-05-12 08:21 AM

Stapfam, I'll share my riding temps/weather with you. It was almost 80F (26C) yesterday and lots of sun. Thats why I moved to Florida. :)

Burr 12-05-12 09:24 AM

90's here but a little rain/wind right now!!

Lighthouse 12-11-12 05:44 PM

I just turned 65 so I would post. New to the forum also. I just ordered a new bike August 24th and am waiting for the builder to make it. It's a Lighthouse Sequoia. Expecting it to be ready in January sometime.

Welcome. Nice looking bike. What color did you get? Double? Triple?

Lighthouse 12-13-12 07:43 AM

I do not have the bike until January but it's going to be painted a dark grey metallic with a touch of purple when it's in the light (modern steel metallic). I have been buying components since the beginning of September and it's going to be a 3x10, shimano/ritchie. I built the wheels myself and they are Mavic Open Pro, 14/15 butted spokes. I put 700x25's on it to start off with.

RonH 12-13-12 06:54 PM

Good choice on the Open Pros. I'm on my second set on my Litespeed (wore out the first set).
I switched from 700x23 to 700x25 last spring. Haven't noticed any change in my speed and the handling seems a bit better in tricky situations. :)

Lighthouse 12-13-12 09:58 PM

I think the 25's look good on the rims. I went for a quick ride after work today on my Surly LHT and towards the end a guy in a 4x4 ran me off the road. So you never know as one minute your on the asphalt and the next your doing the cyclo cross thing. I have 700x28's on my Surly so riding in the gravel and dirt was not really a problem and I was not really in danger of falling.. I am not much worried about speed being 65y/o and all so 25's and the extra bit of weight will make no difference to me.. The roads around here are in poor repair so a bit more tire helps to soften up the rough roads. Once I get the lightouse I am going to give the Surly to my youngest son. He is a college student and wants a commuter transportation bike and the Surly will do him just right. It will probably fit him a bit better then it does me as it is just a bit to large for me and he is taller than I am. The Lighthouse is a fitted frame and will fit like a glove.

Burr's Great Ride,
Great Ride on my city bike (Mountain Bike with slicks and folding baskets), 30 miles across a dirt/cement road in the rice fields. Nice wind, temp was 87f and got a little spot of rain.
Had to climb two freeway over passes in low gear but a great ride

stapfam 12-24-12 02:23 AM

Got a bit wet yesterday on the ride. Kept warm but not dry and the only problem was de watering the bike afterwards. WD works wonders.

Burr 12-24-12 05:37 AM

Merry Christmas from tomorrow.

Tell me why??

We had my birthday party at Shakeys and we bought home enough food to feed a small Army and yet MY WIFE has been in the kitchen cooking all afternoon, Why?http://forum.iron-age-classic-bodybu...lassic/huh.gifhttp://forum.iron-age-classic-bodybu...lassic/huh.gif

Thank You Ron!

I just saw this thread and can only say "it's about time." ;) I don't come here that often, but I do recall that right when I first discovered BF at all was just when the 50+ forum was added, so does that make me a "charter member?" And how many years ago was that, anyway? (The previous question gives me my 65+ bona fides, as I obviously have the CRS condition that so many of us suffer from!)

But in any case, like some similar forums I belong to (such as runners' forums for "Masters", defined as 40+), at 65+ there's almost a generation's worth of gap to the youngest members of the forum. So sometimes we don't all have as much in common as we do within a narrower age range. I was even chastised in a runners' forum for always going on about how great it is to be able to run (and bike) any time I like on weekdays, forgetting that most of the others in the forum are not retired. Probably no danger of that in this thread.

So, short of having a forum to ourselves, I will probably return to visit this thread more often!

RonH 01-05-13 09:01 AM

Welcome Doug. Yes, you should stop by often. :)

Burr 01-05-13 08:15 PM

Hang out Doug.

We ain't getting older, we are getting better

Jimbo47 01-06-13 08:13 AM

Hope everyone had a great holiday season. They seem sneak up, and come faster and faster at our age, but I'm looking forward to some quality time in the saddle this year, which to me, is any time I can spend on my bike is quality time, and to ride away some of those extra pounds I put on during the holidays, as in my case were pretty much unavoidable. At least that is my excuse. LOL!

Hold your horses! Some of us are still working. I could retire, but the lure of a good income, some excitement at work and an increased ability to help my son, DIL and grandson move to California is keeping me going. The biggest challenge is the travel which I really don't enjoy, but you can't have everything (well, maybe you can after you retire).

3bluebikes 01-27-13 11:25 AM

Yesterday was a beautiful winter day in the suburbs southwest of Chicago. We live only a mile from Green Valley Forest Preserve, so I rode my new mountain bike over and enjoyed the sunshine, blue skies, 24 degrees, and no wind at all. There were a few sets of foot prints on the 8 miles of crushed limestone paths; but mine was the first set of mountain bike tire tracks in the one and a half inch snow we received Thursday morning. What a treat!

RonH 01-27-13 06:52 PM

Welcome to the 65+ club. :thumb:

I'll be thinking about you tomorrow while I'm out riding. Supposed to be in the low 80s(F) and sunny. That's precisely why we moved to FL -- no more cold temps. :)
