Happy Wheels to you!

I started riding again a few years ago--hadn't ridden since teen ager. It helps my memory and oh yes did I tell you it helps my memory. And another thing it helps my memory. Has another advantage and I don't recall what it is.

I will try to remember your point.

Sunday is the day. 65. I'll celebrate on Saturday with my first 20 mile ride. I am doing a regular 15 now, so it shouldn't be too tough. Then Sunday reserved for church and naps.

Have fun on the 20.

Looks like I was wrong.

I saw the knee doc today. He said my tan lines are fading from riding on the trainer ;) so he said I could get outside and ride, but to take it easy -- whatever that means. So I'll be heading out to Stone Mtn tomorrow. This will be my first ride since July 19.
If you see some old fart riding really slow, that'll be me. :p

10 Wheels 08-15-11 05:30 PM

Take it easy Ron..

RonH 08-15-11 05:36 PM

Thanks. Even though I've been riding "really hard" the last two weeks I know I've lost some strength in my legs. I'm afraid the thing that is really going to slow me down for the first few outings will be my breathing. :( I hope it will come back quickly.

The air here is very heavy.
4 PM heat index 106*F

Burr 08-15-11 08:38 PM

Bob, Enjoy the 20th.

Stay active

RonH 08-16-11 06:11 PM

Had a nice 22 mile ride to Stone Mtn and back today. My breathing wasn't *off* like I thought it would be. :)

Can I rant a little? I fell off my bike while climbing a mountain and looking over the side of the road and drifted on to the shoulder. Down I went with the result of a sore ankle. That was two months ago. I tried to ride this AM and my ankle is still not being nice to me. I know I'm old but crap!!! This is pissing me off and I just needed to rant a little.

Remember how long a twisted ankle took to heal when we were younger? Give it a bit more time than you did then!

oldster 08-18-11 01:33 PM

assuming it not all puffed up and swollenup, you might try sleeping with a heating pad on it for a few days...I have a knee that gets sore and a few days with the pad takes care of it..but,if itis swollen up it probably has internal bleed and the heat is not a good thing

Try some BenGay and a hot wet towel!

Have you had it checked by a doc or other "qualified" medical person? Maybe its more than a twisted ankle or sprain.

Phil85207 08-18-11 07:38 PM

There is no swelling or other sigh of trauma. There is only pain in the joint when I either put a stand on a slanted surface or try to unclip. One of my daughters is a RN and thinks it will be OK if I take it easy on it. She suggested very strongly to stay off the bike till it's OK. She knows if I get on the bike I won't take it easy. ( She's known me for 51 Years)

They might as well remove this Thread since it didn't take long for it to be corrupted. BTW I just turned 73 and my wife and I bike 2000 miles each year on our Schwinn World Electric bikes which have to be pedaled to get the motor to run.

mission accomplished! 20+ mi. ride to celebrate my 65th b-day! I feel pretty good, did a protein shake before and a 'recovery' shake after. next month the goal is 25 mi., then Oct reserved for roaming around the mountains.

You are going to gain weight with all that shaken going on.
I will drink to that.

Good job on the 20+ ride.

Not sure why you're drinking the protein shakes but they probably aren't helping. Your body needs cards for energy. Try oatmeal and fruit or whatever carb breakfast you like. Save the shakes for when you take some time off the bike.

RonH 08-20-11 01:16 PM

Today was ride #3 since the knee doc said I was good to go. I had planned on doing my regular route including a lap or two around Stone Mtn but that plan failed. We went out with friends last night and I didn't eat enough nor did I eat the right kind of food for riding. They picked the place. :( After a few miles I realized I didn't have enough energy/carb reserves so decided to alter my route. :o
