Not sure why you're drinking the protein shakes but they probably aren't helping. Your body needs cards for energy. Try oatmeal and fruit or whatever carb breakfast you like. Save the shakes for when you take some time off the bike.

well acutally it's a 'meal replacement' shake before, it has some protein and a lot of carbs, not many calories. Clearly the protein after a workout is a good thing, per my research. The protein in the morning also seems to be recommended because of what goes on inside muscles during sleep. I'll investigate more on the subject of carbs before workout. My previous experience (many years ago as a long distance runner) was that carb loading was good the couple days before a run, but the jury was out on pancakes, eggs, or whatever for breakfast before a morning run. Some said yes, some said no, some said they put up with the digestive problems during a run, others said 'Why?'. Thanks for the note.

The protein and shakes are good for bike riders. I drink them.

FWIW - big training article in Oustide Magazine this week which states - essentially - that carb loading does not work.

It was always controversial. But with the big jogging craze and the Jim Fixx and Dr. Cooper aerobics books, there was a lot of experimenting.

I went on the ride this AM (4AM) and it wasn't a thing of beauty. To much to soon after being off the bike for so long. The Ankle is not real happy but it's only a little sore if I move it the wrong way. I guess I'll give it a little more time. Grrrrrrrr. It sure felt good to get back on the bike again though.http:

Did someone say something about a senior center here in Parker?

I saw the knee doc today. He said my tan lines are fading from riding on the trainer ;) so he said I could get outside and ride, but to take it easy -- whatever that means. So I'll be heading out to Stone Mtn tomorrow. This will be my first ride since July 19.
If you see some old fart riding really slow, that'll be me. :p

Great News! But PLEASE take it easy - no he-man riding. Slow and easy is the key to future cycling ability. I speak from experience after having both knees replaced 5/6 years ago. Did as much PT as allowable and then some. Did RAGBRAI last year and this year. Will Cycle North Carolina in October this year.

My brother-in-law had a knee done and started out from the getgo walking 10-15 miles a day right out of the hospital (or so he says). Now his knee is frozen with scar tissue and he's in pain day and night. Can't do a thing in his retirement.

'Nuff said. Enjoy your rides and hope to see you riding.

This is old hat to me. Had arthroscopic surgery on the right knee in 2008. No big deal. I bounced back in a few weeks.
The left knee had the same procedure on July 21 so again no big deal. I'm already closing in on my pre-surgery fitness level. I was riding 27-37 miles 3-4 days a week before the surgery. I was up to 45 minutes on the trainer after 2 weeks -- 55 minutes when the doc said I was good to go. Been back on the road for a week.

Is everyone on vacation? No one (other than me) riding?

I'm riding about 125 miles per week - or other similar things like putting around on my bent or doing the mtn bike thing - described elsewhere.

Burr 09-02-11 05:01 PM

It has rained for four months so I get to ride between the drops from time to time. I try to ride my trainer but that's no fun.

I lift three days a week and ride my city bike between rides locally.

About 4 weeks ago I treated myself to a set of 4.5" diameter Kreitler Challenger rollers. I've been recovering from double hernia surgery and doing some low resistance spinning on a set of cheap PVC rollers I'd picked many years ago at Performance bike. They were very noisy and rough riding. The Kreitlers are expensive, but silky smooth and very quiet. They also have a simple tooless wheelbase adjustment system that doesn't require removal of the front drum. Well worth the money IMO.

Glad to hear you're recovering ok. :)
Enjoy the rollers. :thumb:

Age 70...Newbie here...3500 miles since Feb 24 2011...I have a butt proof seat

I mistakenly posted this in the 50+ thread...did not notice where all of old dudes hang out...

I'm loving this sport. I started Feb 27th 2011

I have a Giant Suede Dx bought at a hi tech bike shop. Its a comfort bike and I told the sales guy that I wanted to do a 100 mile ride before my 70th birthday... He told me I was crazy. No way someone could ride that far on a comfort bike.. It was fun watching him eat crow in May
I have the most butt friendly saddle in the world. Rode the 100 miles in my Fruit of The Looms skivies. Did not have padded shorts.

My biking buddy had a new Cannondale road bike and all the biker togs and after 70 miles all he could say was this "butt needs to get off this bike" He did finish the Centruy with me but could not ride for a week his butt was so sore. I did 30 miles the next day.

Last year for for his 70th birthday he rode across Florida in July (very hot). His route was 152 miles.. He did 100 the first day and finished it the 2nd day...

I am a slow rider. I typicaly average 12.5 - 13.5 mph on these longer rides. Part of the reason is that my bike has limits when it comes to speed (tires, riding position etc.) Going into a headwind really slows me down.

Having done my first Century ride in May, I needed a new goal for my 70th birthday in July so my buddy and I rode around Lake Okechobee in Florida in a heat index of 104. We rode a total of 125 miles in 24 hours. We did 85 miles the first day. It was like riding in an oven.

Up on the dike totaly exposed to wind and sun ..no shade anywhere. Actually it was really great. If any of you want to know more about that ride, let me know. I have some pictures and can share details if anybody is interested in doing the same ride.

Sorry don't mean to sound like I am bragging here, but I am really excited about this new hobby. I think Im doing good for my age...

DnvrFox 09-21-11 04:02 PM

Congratulations on the riding and the Century. You did that so soon after starting. Enjoy.

Burr 09-21-11 04:54 PM

You are doing great, putting me to shame.

There was an 80 year old guy zipping along on his bike. A younger guy saw him and decided to catch up with him--couldn't let the old fellow out do him. After some hard peddaling he caught up. Told the old guy you are doing a fairly good pace, but you wont last long. The old gent said sonny I'm in great shape and I can outdo you at anything you want to mention. The young guy said yea right--bet you don't have a sex life. The old guy said " I have sex almost everyday. Almost on Monday almost on Tuesday.....
