Hello bruce19,
You and I are both "out there", I remember that tome from the 1980's I believe. I know Hawking and others have their own ideas but that is what I shall enjoy while I am in my sunset years. Speaking of the Sun, I took a beautiful picture of the full moon last night under cloudless skies. Was it cloudy in Lebanon or where you priviledged (not 2 good at sp.) to see it?
Regards.
Jim.

This isn't an old thread. Its on-going. :)

Hi - as the starter of this thread in 2006, I say WELCOME!!

It seems as if many more 50+ folks are now 65+ or older (I guess it happens with aging :) ) and are posting in the regular 50+ threads.

1931alloyboy 08-11-14 05:56 PM

Thank you for starting this thread DnvrFox. And a big thank you for the welcome. Sincerely. Jim.

I just couldn't force myself out of bed early enough yesterday or today to go riding. I have to get out by 9AM or I'll really suffer and my wife will fuss at me because of the heat. I just felt like lazing around till 8:30. Too late to get ready and get out before 9:00.
I always ride alone. There are other cyclist around here but I see them on the way to the trail, either ahead of me or behind me or they pass me as they're heading home because they left really early. Not sure if I'm tired of riding alone or tired of the hot weather. :o
Any thoughts?

Outback Cayucan 08-31-14 09:17 PM

Is there a bike club in your area or LBS with organized rides? Both are available here. I was last of five Express B riders this AM. ~ 37 mi. 22.8k/h. Aug. total 619k; 3236k 2014. Riding more; appreciating the experience and friends immeasurably.

Hi Ron. Seems perhaps like a change of pace is needed.

Before wasn't riding the first thing you wanted to do and it got you out of bed running to get in the saddle?

Suspect many or all of us welcome some change after years of riding and a ton of miles.

RonH 09-06-14 01:25 PM

We moved from Atlanta to west central Florida where there are lots of nice bike trails because my wife was always worried that I'd get hit by a car while riding in Atl traffic. So was I even though I never was -- just a few close calls. After being hit last Monday (Labor Day) all I can say is at 69.7 years of age I'm getting too old for this sort of thing. :notamused:

tsurr 09-10-14 11:50 AM

Hopefullt, you and the bike are ok, how did it happen?

RonH 09-11-14 01:38 PM

You can read about the accident here.
Look at my signature and you'll see the fate of the bike. :(

I am 76 and have been riding a 21 speed KHS TC 150 for several months. I was up to 26 miles before I had A mini stroke or a TIA. I am back up to 15 miles and gaining. My first goal was 30 miles. Don't know where I want to go after that.

Miami Biker 09-14-14 11:05 AM

Had a great ride last Thursday to share.

Age 69, weigh about 210, replaced right knee (TKR) in 2005. Anyways rode with my group Thursday. We leave at 7 AM, ride 21 MPH for 8 miles, then ride two or three laps around Speedway which is 6.25 miles.

Managed to hang on for first lap at 22 MPH and then second at 23.9 which did in 15:53! Point is getting stronger which am delighted about.

Total ride was 31 miles and averaged 20.5, fastest ever. Oh, also pulled twice. We can do it!

LAriverRat 09-25-14 11:48 PM

Did 2 miles on my 1988 Park Pre Hammer MB. Still in pain from my crash over 3 years ago. Porked up to 214 pounds. Finally able to do a long walk without my hands killing me. Walk 2 miles, MB 2 miles. Going to start selling off my road bikes. The Torelli is first to go, then the Bianchi, may never ride a road bike again.

peterws 10-14-14 01:15 PM

Me here too. 66 soon. . .too bloody soon! But I can still ride round the hills where I live, and enjoy being passed by athletic ladies who dance very nicely on them pedals. . .and give me a condescending wave as they fly by!

rdtompki 10-14-14 04:59 PM

I've had a few slow months having been pretty busy with other stuff. I've got 5-6 weeks to shape up for my 69 mile ride-your-age-ride. Last year I did 70 miles with 5000' of climbing and I refuse to backslide. The one thing I have going for me is I have mysteriously dropped 20+ lbs since then which will really help with the climbing, but I've got to sneak in a few 50+ mile training rides. I usually get up by 0500 and I've accelerated my morning schedule to get out of the house by 0700 to ride: coffee/breakfast, feed the horses, feed the dog, ride. It's still a bit dark at 0700, but I can be on the bike NLT 0715.

70plus 10-30-14 10:29 AM

I found my age group! :ride:

JanMM 10-30-14 11:16 AM

Something to look forward to: I can post here in three months! :twitchy:

RonH 10-30-14 02:14 PM

Glad to see this thread is "dead". Last post (before today) was over two weeks ago. :)

CrankyFranky 11-04-14 05:56 PM

Hey - that's not fair! The thread can't go dead until after I qualify to post here! And I did, yesterday. Yahoo!

..............................................................Where am I?

JimmyH 11-04-14 08:51 PM

Turned 66 last month. Just found this thread tonight. I'll be keeping an eye on it. Friend of mine told me a word of encouragement I'll pass on to y'all ........ 66 ain't old ........ if you're a tree ! :D

Leadrunner 11-06-14 12:58 PM

Love it. Where did you get it, please?

peterws 11-09-14 12:15 PM

Sure, welcome aboard. All you have to do is get our North American time zones squared away. Not everyone is 5 hours out.

A few snowflakes overnight (2 inches), it's about time for my snow tires. We are so lucky, I feel sorry for those guys in Florida (RonH) who don't get this nice white stuff. How are things in Lebanon Bruce19?

You can keep it. I got plenty of the white stuff when I lived in Atlanta. That is one of the many reasons we retired to rural Florida.

Outback Cayucan 11-17-14 04:22 PM

Another beautiful morning with the snow shovel. I am lucky I didn't get what the folks in Buffalo NY got from Lake Erie.

Just thought I'd check into this section for the first time. Turned 65 this July and recovering from a Quintuple bypass that didn't work, about sixteen months ago. All bypasses but one failed within six weeks and now living with four stents in alternate veins. I feel fine but can no longer climb anywhere near as well, but can and do ride three times a week. Always had very high Chol, and never weighed more than 132 my entire life. Did a 25 mile ride the day before the heart attack and felt fine. All that to say.....I'm blessed to be here at 65!

Now riding a LOOK 585 that I picked up as NOS about a year ago and with all DA it is a dream ride.

Didn't ride today but could have at 60 degrees. No question bout it, summer weather in GA is hot and humid, but the winters can bring some very nice days. Enjoy your turkey leftovers but watch the pie. :)

Great to know you still strong, I never thought it's possible to continue ride three times a week with 4 stents:)

Wonder how much you ride per week? I turned 70 this Sept., re-started cycling 3 years ago, weekly about 15-20km, some times may go for short trips of 40-50km, but rather slow, 10-15km/hour.

Just wonder how much do our senior fellows ride weekly, any average figures ?

Also I would suggest to have a seperate forum for fifty-plus-50, then under the forum we can have many thread to discuss topics of interests. At the moment everything is under the same thread, which makes it hard to look into different topics.

best

smoore 12-05-14 12:09 PM

tanventure, I'm riding three times a week and I ride about twenty miles at 13.5 MPH. Frankly, I'm just out for the exercise and not trying to ride at my max. However, I am capable of riding the same distance at about 15mph if I want to. I can easily ride 35+ miles, but my schedule and the clock just doesn't often allow it. (sorry I can't convert that info to km) Until recently I would have told you that my butt gives out after about a couple of hours and to do a four-five hour ride requres constant movement while on the saddle and as much time as possible in the drops. However.....as I just posted in another thread, I have just started using a Selle Anatomica saddle that has done away with ALL discomfort. Frankly, I think I could now ride for as many hours as my legs and lungs allow. I am overwhelmed with how good it feels. I wish I would have tried one 35 years ago...but I'm not sure they've been around that long. :)

Now...here's the problem. Yes, I have four stents but I also have four totally blocked and closed bypasses out of five. It's a long story but after checking with at least six doctors at some of the most prestigious hospitals in the country, no one can tell me why or what happened.
So, I am blessed by God to be alive and feeling great BUT I have a lot of truble going up large hills, even in the lowest gear. The drugs I take put a "governor" of sorts on my heart, mostly it's the Beta-blockers that do that. Here is a definition;

"Decreases the heart rate and cardiac output, which lowers blood pressure and makes the heart beat more slowly and with less force."

As you can imagine, this is exactly what you don't want when trying to ride up hills....or the mountains we have in N. Georgia.

So, my Tour De France dreams are over but I am still able to do some spirited rides, but not quite like before the heart attack. Getting old is not for the faint of heart....no pun intended. :) Good luck.
