A few snowflakes overnight (2 inches), it's about time for my snow tires. We are so lucky, I feel sorry for those guys in Florida (RonH) who don't get this nice white stuff. How are things in Lebanon Bruce19?

You can keep it. I got plenty of the white stuff when I lived in Atlanta. That is one of the many reasons we retired to rural Florida.

Just thought I'd check into this section for the first time. Turned 65 this July and recovering from a Quintuple bypass that didn't work, about sixteen months ago. All bypasses but one failed within six weeks and now living with four stents in alternate veins. I feel fine but can no longer climb anywhere near as well, but can and do ride three times a week. Always had very high Chol, and never weighed more than 132 my entire life. Did a 25 mile ride the day before the heart attack and felt fine. All that to say.....I'm blessed to be here at 65!
Now riding a LOOK 585 that I picked up as NOS about a year ago and with all DA it is a dream ride. Didn't ride today but could have at 60 degrees. No question bout it, summer weather in GA is hot and humid, but the winters can bring some very nice days. Enjoy your turkey leftovers but watch the pie. :) |

I turned 70 this Sept., re-started cycling 3 years ago, weekly about 15-20km, some times may go for short trips of 40-50km, but rather slow, 10-15km/hour. Just wonder how much do our senior fellows ride weekly, any average figures ? Also I would suggest to have a seperate forum for fifty-plus-50, then under the forum we can have many thread to discuss topics of interests. At the moment everything is under the same thread, which makes it hard to look into different topics. best |
tanventure, I'm riding three times a week and I ride about twenty miles at 13.5 MPH. Frankly, I'm just out for the exercise and not trying to ride at my max. However, I am capable of riding the same distance at about 15mph if I want to. I can easily ride 35+ miles, but my schedule and the clock just doesn't often allow it. (sorry I can't convert that info to km) Until recently I would have told you that my butt gives out after about a couple of hours and to do a four-five hour ride requres constant movement while on the saddle and as much time as possible in the drops. However.....as I just posted in another thread, I have just started using a Selle Anatomica saddle that has done away with ALL discomfort. Frankly, I think I could now ride for as many hours as my legs and lungs allow. I am overwhelmed with how good it feels. I wish I would have tried one 35 years ago...but I'm not sure they've been around that long. :)
Now...here's the problem. Yes, I have four stents but I also have four totally blocked and closed bypasses out of five. It's a long story but after checking with at least six doctors at some of the most prestigious hospitals in the country, no one can tell me why or what happened. So, I am blessed by God to be alive and feeling great BUT I have a lot of truble going up large hills, even in the lowest gear. The drugs I take put a "governor" of sorts on my heart, mostly it's the Beta-blockers that do that. Here is a definition; "Decreases the heart rate and cardiac output, which lowers blood pressure and makes the heart beat more slowly and with less force." As you can imagine, this is exactly what you don't want when trying to ride up hills....or the mountains we have in N. Georgia. So, my Tour De France dreams are over but I am still able to do some spirited rides, but not quite like before the heart attack. Getting old is not for the faint of heart....no pun intended. :) Good luck. |

Great to know you still strong, I never thought it's possible to continue ride three times a week with 4 stents:)

I'm 67 and still cycling. I usually do 13-14.5 mph. Don't have the need for excessive speed. I just enjoy the ride. I have a herd of bicycles that I long to get down to just 4. Mostly are urban/city bikes but I also have a tourer and road bike [road bike has 700 x 28c tires for less road friction and higher level handlebars]. I don't ride in groups. I'm having fun and getting exercise and photographing where I ride.

Between shopping, preparing for my "surprise" 70th bday party, weather, dr appts, etc. I haven't been out in almost 2 weeks.
Tomorrow I'm hitting the trail. :D Not sure if I'll take the Litespeed or the Cannondale. Thursday we're having company for a few days but I'll be riding for my 70th. I doubt if I'll do 70 miles. Maybe 70km. :innocent: |
Snow?
Can't say I miss it. Sunny with temp in the low 80's today. Then again it's a different story come summer |

I'm 72 and rode 5000 miles in 2014. In the winter I put 20 miles on my trainer each ride.

It sounds more impressive than it is. about 85 minutes a day on the trainer watching television. I keep the speed up between 14.5-15 mph. I would NEVER do a 50 mile ride....ever. Thirty-two miles was my longest ride during the year.

Turned 73 the 28th of Dec, 2014. I ride every day & do not own a car. Don't know how far I ride (average maybe 7-10 miles per day) & don't really care -- just havin' fun.

I definitely qualify to post in this section being over 70.
If other things allow (weather, being at home etc etc) a pedal out would be hopefully 30.km that will include several Km of decent hill climb which is more strenuous than just flat pedaling, using one of my road bikes of course. I also pedal off-road on farm gravel trails, this is predominantly flat ground so here 30.Km is a good run out on my Scott hard-tail. |
Great to hear you guys. Well done, all of you. . . Im a cranky 66yo who loves to grind over Kirkstone Pass English Lakes in summer wi me shirt off. Wife thinks I'm too old for that. . .
I remember doing this when I was early ,40s, wondering how long I would last. . . plenty of older fellas doin the same. . . and the women too. I've never minded being passed by a woman. . . :) |
Welcome to the "old folks" group. Kirkstone Pass looks very nice. Kudos to you. :thumb:
