Still riding, but not as fast or as far. These days I just dawdle along, stopping often to smell (and photograph) the roses and other sights. i'm still trying to 'ride like I'm 50!' |

68 coming up and still as mustard keen. But these days I'm more into virtual riding, racing. We could do with more over 65s in Zwift racing. Competition certainly keeps us going and trying far harder and further than we would otherwise. Available 365 d/yr, no hassles with weather or traffic, and the racing, although different from out IRL, takes skills and craft. There's some folks who are over 75 who are seriously strong and able, which must give encouragement to us all. Sensible diet, plenty of exercise and a sunny and youthful spirit, and we're all set to enjoy our maturity.

Well I've turned 69, will be 70 later this year, but that's only 20.6 Celsius.
I found this a few years back, don't know if it belongs here. Cyclists never grow old, just slower. Greg LeMond said something similar, but it ended "you just go faster" I guess with all this cycling we have quite a few years left, but my view of mortality have changed, or even only just developed in the last year or so. OLD MEN Ogden Nash (1902-1971) People expect old men to die, They do not really mourn old men. Old men are different. People look At them with eyes that wonder when... People watch with unshocked eyes; But the old men know when an old man dies. |
I was on my bike in Mt Rainier NP when a younger couple with 2 bikes on top, slowed and said, ‘You are our model, we want to be like you in the future.’ All I could respond with was, ‘Missy, be careful what you ask for...’ as they drove off. |
Newbie to the forums. I’m 72. Been riding somewhat seriously since 1981. Re-emphasizing cycling starting last week! Mike |

I've got so many bikes and such a big world, hope to avoid the virtual reality, or should I say - artificial reality - of riding indoors.
Lucky in life = priceless YMMV |

I knew I'd get old, I just didn't know it would happen this quickly. :) Loved the poem and I can relate. I'm slower but happy to be able to ride, especially since my heart attack five years ago. I wouldn't mind having a riding partner but yea...not easy to find. But I don't mind riding alone either, lets me stop and smell the roses and send the occasional text to my kids and grandkids letting the know how much I love them. Blessings to you. Wear bright colors and use a "blinky". |
Guys,
Didn't this forum used to have some sort of annual regional ride/get together in the past? Does that still happen? Or maybe I have my forums confused? |

Be 80 in a couple months. Tried Zwift and can't stand to be passed by EVERY rider. Much like Strava Zwift so far is ignoring 75 plus. Zwift claims to have formula/adjustments to compensate for age. - but I sure can't see it and they refused to explain. Gave up on Zwift. May be hope in future with new virtual cycling program (CVRcade) built by guy that developed many of Zwift's first rides - remember CASH and prizes?. Beta due in Dec. Re: diet, exercise and spirit - agree 100%. The older you get fewer riding companions are available. Don't give up biking - it is probably the best thing you can to to live a longer and healthier life.

Much of the discussion seems to be on staying active. This week I had my annual visit to my cardiologist. He noticed that I have dropped a few pounds. I can only attribute that to an increase in riding. I need the weather to break, however. I've decided that it has to be at least 37 F to ride. I'll be 72 this year.

being in the south,I need 47 degrees ,and not much wind, started riding in 1980,turn 75 this month, much slower but still ride 5,000 miles a year

Impressive. Also being in the South....47 degrees is pretty much my low as well. On blood thinners and I think that's a part of it.

Out here we can ride in every month with some preps for the wet and damp and low angle winter sun.
Near the water = very few days of snow/sleet/ice. Almost none in last few years. Fenders and layers do it. Below 40, means my toes are the limiting factor. 68 years old |
yes living in Knoxville, we have the four seasons but no drastic cold, I am sure we adapt to our conditions, lived in the Dc area years ago, after the military, you also have humidity in the summer like us,
|
Winter in Central Indiana is a crapshoot. Able to ride yesterday in sunny 60 degree weather but we were sub-zero in the middle of last week.
I'm good down into the 30's but am much more likely to ride at 50 and above. Being newly retired, I anticipate more winter miles because when the odd nice winter day happens, I should be available to take advantage of it. |
jokes on me.
I'm near Portland for a short trip and Seattle got hit with snow, just as I'm headed home. . |
The prevalence of ice is the biggest factor here, but 3’ of snow the past 2 weeks means the shoulders are often partially covered with plowed snow. I can ride when it’s 40 but even if I’m comfortable I don’t enjoy it that much (also, it might not get up to 40 for weeks at a time). In 10 days I’m hitting the road to camp and gravel ride in Florida, Georgia and wherever it’s warm. Will probably give the Swamp Fox Gravel Fondo a try. |
You sound like my kind of cyclist. Just keep on moving!
|
The temps have kept icy spots in many areas even tho the roads are mostly clear. No shoulder to speak of with the plowed snow (now icebergs) and accumulated sand and debris. High temps in the 30s.
Was going to venture out on the bike. But thought about it a second time...…….. Nah ---- i'm playing the long game. |
RonH - some forms of family 'support' are appreciated.....others maybe not.
Sloth Cycling might make a great re-gifting idea - for another family member, or not. |
Just dodging rain clouds in ole SoCal. Tomorrow the suns out and hitting the road...
|
We had another 4" snow yesterday. Tomorrow snowshoeing, the next day Alpine skiing. Then hopefully having the energy to spin and lift at the gym. Etc. The next ten days looks just the same - cold and occasional snow so a choice of indoor training or fun at the Pass. Unusual here. We usually get a warm rain after a few days of snow and then floods.

It's mid-February. Upper Midwest this year feels like the NE. Heavy snow, deep freeze(-27* wind chill), 48* sunny for the weekend following, then just WI Feb cold(20s and wind). Tonight its snowing and 20s. Can't nordic ski, road bike or put the mtb on the paved trail(just not enjoyable). All in all, a very ****ty winter for the bike. Thank god for zwift. I would probably be on Dateline if not for my global virtual community.
|
we got 38 miles on the 5 of Feb,. rain ever since ,going to spin classes
|
Still skiing
Here in Western New York, there's a bit more skiing to be done before I get to that new Orbea Avant in the basement. At 68,I'm looking to build up my miles and am looking forward an Erie Canal end to end in July.
