Bethany Beach boardwalk yesterday. I have a 2014 Orbea Avant MD30 that I purchased new in 2016. Nice bike, real comfortable. I put a riser type stem on it, Ritchey Pro 110mm 30 deg rise. I also switched wheels from unbranded Shimano to Corsa Vuelta SLX with 28 mm Hutchinson Fusion 5 tires. A very large diference in weight. I put 38 miles on it yesterday. I hope you like yours. |
Yay! At long last I qualify for movie theater discounts, Medicare, and most importantly, posting in this thread. Here are pictures of me and my bike at Eroica California back when I was a young man (i.e. 64):

They're great! I've convinced my regular riding group to all use them and now we can more easily have conversations while riding briskly. They also make it much easier to hear cars coming up from behind and drastically reduce that tiresome roaring sound of the wind. You do need to adjust the helmet straps so that they're snug to make them work properly. The only downside is that they look a bit dorky, but when everyone in the group is using them it doesn't matter (plus at my age, dorkiness is not the most significant body image issue). Sadly, they're no longer available in a wide array of colors...only basic black.
This morning's ride the temp never got above 30F. Saw a low of 24 on the Garmin, but it reads low. Fingers and toes were not happy. |
I finally got out today now that both hand surgeries are behind me. Haven't ridden in the past 3 weeks and last period of regular riding was in mid-December. Felt good to get out. Rode 15 miles. :)

possibly inappropriate on a bicycle forum, but grandfathered yesterday.
A girl. All well. :) |

Glad to hear you got on the bike today. Cilla and I were wondering why we haven't seen you for awhile. Hope to see you on the trail soon. Take care. |

I have been dealing with trigger fingers and carpal tunnel syndrome forway to long. |
Two years after fall and broken hip. Have riden 8,000 miles since. Gets tougher when we are recovering at this age.
Anyways ended up doing 50 mile solo ride yesterday. Been about a year since did last 50. Been averaging 35 per ride for past year. Friend and I planning on riding our age before it gets warmer here in South Florida. Last rode age in 2017, so doing one this year means 74. Hoping to average 15-16 MPH for this long a trip but depends on the wind. Wishing everyone well. |
Hey jppe. See you are back. How's it going?
Any residual hip issues? My hip okay once got a few shots but not riding at speed or distance as before. Hope all is well. |

I’m signed up for Bike Florida late March and hopefully it will be good medicine for getting some additional time in the saddle. It sounds like your riding is going well! I’m learning to adjust my expectations. |

Thanks for checking in! Riding is going okay.....it has been 6 months since the replacement. I’m working my way back up to the longer rides. An 80 miler is going well now. But I don’t seem to have recovered the power I once had. I’m nowhere near as fast as I once was. I’ve ridden some with the local group I’ve ridden with before the crash. I do okay on the flats but I now get dropped on the hills. Before the crash I could easily stay with them and even out ride most of them. Heck, I’m getting older, was off the bike for 3 months and had a hip replaced. Maybe I should be slower???? I’m signed up for Bike Florida late March and hopefully it will be good medicine for getting some additional time in the saddle. It sounds like your riding is going well! I’m learning to adjust my expectations. As before key is doing intervals of varying lengths, and then mixing with easy rides. I’m not doing enough interval training. Let’s check in later. My next goal is riding my age. Will see... |

Curious about the process? how long is the surgery?/recuperation for you? was it covered by insurance or did you have to pay out of pocket?
I have been dealing with trigger fingers and carpal tunnel syndrome forway to long. I had carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand in early February. Doc said it too was ok to ride after 2 weeks but my hand/wrist felt a bit weak and kinda bruised where he also removed 2 cysts from the wrist area so waited another week. Still no problems. The new carpal tunnel surgery is noice. There is virtually no scar and the incision is very small. Since I retired I have never received a bill for any surgeries (stent, prostate removal, hernia, carpal, etc.). I guess between Medicare and our good insurance from past employer we are very fortunate. :) |

I too live in Miami. Looking for a hand surgeon . would you recommend the one that worked on you ?
They specialize so surgeon who did my hip would not likely do hands. You might check out the practice. Due to renovations some docs are now at Baptist Hospital on Kendall Drive. They likely have a hand specialist. As you probably know surgery is always a last resort so perhaps there are other treatment modalities and perhaps not. Wish you well and glad to help if I can. |
I'm 68 and looking at the street out front of the house as the snow finally starts to recede a bit. Main streets are okay as they plowed them out and they have melted clear of snow, but lots of winter salt and road grit around, makes for slippery turns. Side streets have two feet of snow out from the curbs still, but the centers are clear if you don't mind dodging cars. I figure by this Thursday it will be okay, if not too wet.
Riding a Roam 3 disc, I usually do 30 kilometer rides but was adding 40 kilometer rides once a week by the end of the season last year. So tempted to pick up a vintage drop bar bike just to try out the drops for a longer ride. Test rode a Trek Cross Rip a few weeks ago and liked the very short ride, but am not ready to spend the money based on that short trip. Started riding last July, took a while to get the body used to riding, lost 11 pounds over 4 months, from 202 down to 191 pounds but gained 6 of those back over winter. Can't wait to get back on the saddle. Rog |

Okay folks - here is the 65+ thread.
So so far I’ve just gone on a handful of short rides. My legs are telling me how much I can do. So far it’s been great and as the weather turns to true spring I’ll be riding more and more. I’ll be back |
Welcome, be safe, have fun.

I’m 71 and just started riding again. My younger friend has been pushing me to do so. We both moved to the same 55plus development and he wanted someone to ride with and knew I’d really enjoy it. 74 here, i have not done much riding since i came back from the philippines in early dec. both knees are holding back my riding adventures, while in the ph i could only manage 6 mile rides, i did one 15 mile but the old knees would have none of it. i am scheduled for a right knee replacement in may. the doc said i was to old to do both knees at once, so it will have to be the right then the left. not looking forward to the long recovery but it's got to be done. photo of my 2002 jamis komado i use in the ph.

69 and frustrated. First one knee was bothering me, took a year plus a few months to heal up. Then the other knee decided it wanted all the attention, it's been about a year now and I thinik...maybe....it is in the final stages of healing. Frustrated because my daily rides have been limited to 10 miles and going mostly on flats to not aggravate things further. Maybe it would have healed faster if I hadn't be on the bike at all, but I'd go insane. And my bike is also my car. So I've been babying it along and now spring is here and I'm trying to hold back and not do something stupid. Chronic stuff is just the pits. It's not the pain, which I can totally ignore, it's knowing it's going to take a very long time and I can't push it. Of course, I have no idea what the problem has been....I think meniscus, but my doc basically said I was too old to have surgery on them, just to wait until they completely crap out and get knee replacements. Hoping to put that off for a long time. I've got a small motor unit coming that I can pop on and off the bike so I'm hoping judicious use of that will prevent me from going backwards in the healing process, I'm just really desperate to do long rides.

Earlier in March mentioned two of us wanted to ride our age (74 in 10 days for me and 72 soon for friend). Well today the stars came into alignment and we rode 76.7 miles in five hours. Goal was to average over 15 MPH which we did. First age ride since 2017 when broke my hip; so very pleased to do this again. FWIW seemed to get stronger the longer we road. Hard to believe but feels great. Wonderful sense of achievement even though it matters little in reality. With this ride reached 611 miles in March — the most in some time. |

I experience intermittent problems - and determining the cause is difficult. Some long rides (60 miles+), no problems. Some short rides, problems. Fortunately it’s been nothing too limiting or serious. Bike fit, foot position, pedaling motion are things that come up when you read about cycling and knee problems. I love to run and a few years back I damaged my meniscus (according to an MRI) and a sports medicine doc told me I was done. Not happy with that, I went to a trainer who works with people with running injuries and she laid out a recovery program that worked for me. I don’t do the mileage I once did, but I’m still running two or three times a week (in the winter). Maybe it’s worth investigating bike fit and training for your knee issues. |
