I will be 73 next month. Just did 14 miles on my mountain bike. That is all.

I wondered what it would be like at 80 years old, I've had some time to get used to it. The motivation is still there, but I had to change a few things. I still consider myself a bicycle enthusiast, however, I had to take my back problem into consideration, so I am now a stand-up scooter rider and take some of the strain away from bending for hours
I found out how different standing and stepping on the Me=Mover was, how my muscles had to adjust, and adjust I did about 2 years ago. For one thing, everything happens quicker, heart rate increases within minutes without sprinting, when I do sprint, I can feel the aerobic conditioning, again quick. I can carve, take Z turns with ease at speed and appreciate the stability under the worst of conditions. I miss biocyle riding, but the Me-Mover made me a believer. |

Finally got my first ride of the year in yesterday with 13 miles on my favorite local rail-trail. With the weather we've been having, this is the latest first ride that I can recall, and I can see that at 71 it will take longer to get back into cycling shape than it used to. The difference this year is that, although I've been able to keep up with some running over the winter, I did not do my usual spinning class at all, and it shows. Definitely some sore quads this morning!
So as cycling takes over more and more from running as my primary fitness activity, I'm going to be sure that I keep doing it in some form all year long. By the way, when I go to one of these classes, I often don't follow what the instructor is telling us to do (not sure that doing "jumps" relates to what I'm trying to achieve), but just being obligated to spend a specific length of time in a group pedaling continuously generally does the job for me. |
I've been riding along the Gulf coast from a campground in Mississippi, but now that I'm home in Maine, I realize that all that flat riding doesn't really get a 71 yo in shape for the hills.
|
Getting ready for my birthday ride. Finally found a stretch of mostly safe road (nice wide shoulder) without many ups. Only the section between Creede and South Fork is dangerous - but not much traffic mid May. In fact mostly down hill. Link is my most favorite website.
Flattest Route But when I get to the bottom, I will have turn around and go back up to make my 79 miles. Goal 100 miles. |

Sunshine is overrated ;). My wife and I spent a couple weeks in Tucson and were going nuts by the end from the unrelentingly bright sunlight (March). Every time going outside it was wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, and the sun beating on us through the car windows. Just a few clouds to provide a few minutes of shade would have been welcome.
Another thing about clouds is that they give some "depth" or "contour" to the sky, as well as motion, instead of just a big, blue dome overhead. Never thought I'd be glad to get back to cloudy Michigan, but... |
Here's one for Wildwood. In between the snow and spring, you can almost see into Canada from central NY.
It's not the distance, it's the hills. Two good ones and some trail riding. This. Then one more hill to burn it off and smooth sailing home. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/823/4...40a717db_k.jpg GrnLksBr by |

Ok, I did it. :D I pulled the trigger today. Lynskey is having a huge sale and I've been looking at their bikes for a few weeks so I couldn't pass up the savings. Got a 2018 Lynskey Helix Pro road bike. Traded-in the Cannondale on it. Yes, they take trade-ins.
I upgraded to Ultegra 8000. I'm keeping the wheels from the Cannondale and swapping them for the Mavic Aksium wheels that are stock on the bike. I'll be flipping the stem too. I'll post pics when I get it. You'll have to be happy with this for now. https://cdn3.bigcommerce.com/s-m0s28...00.333.jpg?c=2 |
The new bike came after I got home from my ride today.
https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.h...&dpr=2&pid=1.7 I started assembling the bike until it started getting warm. I don't have an air conditioned garage so I'll finish it tomorrow morning. The back porch is on the west side of the house and will stay comfortable until about 1:00PM. I'll post pics when its finished. |

if your Helix rides as smooth as my GR260 you will love it. I’m looking at getting a second set of wheels just for riding on the road/paved surfaces. Looking forward to the pictures and ride reports. |

Here's the bike. Started assembling it yesterday afternoon and finished it today. All it needs now is a bath to get the oily film off the Ti. Probably from the welding process?

The seat stays also have the helix but hard to see in the pics. No ride today but a new neighbor was riding around last night and saw me working on it in the driveway. He asked about the bike. He has an aluminum Orbea. He's thinking of getting a new bike. Anyway, we're meeting up Monday morning for the maiden voyage and our first ride together. :thumb: |

VERY NICE!! Can't wait to see it in person. However, I can't believe you weren't out on it today. The weather was great and the trail was quite void of riders.... well except for the "Walk for Life" in Inverness. Look forward to seeing you on the trail Monday.

Are those 25mm tires?

Didn't ride today because I was finishing up the bike. You know, final adjustments, installing the bike computer, then washing and drying the bike and lubing the chain. It was dry.
Nice ride. Enjoy. |
Finishing up took a few hours. I'm very meticulous. It started raining while I was washing the bike. Didn't last long but I don't do wet or rainy rides. And as I mentioned, I'm riding with a new neighbor on Monday. He just moved into the community and has been looking for someone to ride with.

Looks great! |
Turned 70
Two weeks ago, I turned the big 70. I haven't been on my bike much in the last three years, since I've had 3 knees replaced,,,, No I'm not 3 legged, I had one of them done twice. :) Yesterday I took the longest ride of the year,, actually the second ride of the year, I did 16 miles and it sure felt good to get the wind in my hair and do some hard breathing.
|
Well congratulations Mr. Ron H,,,,,, that's a mighty fine looking bike you got yourself,,,, are you clipping in?

Met Bernie (the new neighbor) at the trail today. This was my first ride on the Lynskey. The ride was awesome. :thumb: Got a great workout. The only problem was the rear derailleur. I had to stop twice to do an adjustment on the barrel adjuster. But that's to be expected on any new bike. Had a nice ride from Hernando to the north end and back. Bernie says he usually only rides 10-25 miles. I'll have to get him out of that routine. ;) Didn't see Bruce DowneasTTer and his wife. Maybe we'll cross paths on Wednesday. |
Hey sounds like you're off and riding,,,, ,
