It was late last June that I got taken out of biking by a spider bite that led to a reaction to the antibiotics given. That was followed by a bit more eye surgery and a "lump" in my throat and a concussion early this year. I'm finally better and if it would just stop snowing now I'll be back on the bike before my 72 birthday.

Time for some good times for a change.

edit: Always claim The Sunshine State! .... because, I got no retort there. We hardly see that bright blob in the sky for very long stretches at least 4 months a year. Add on 2-3 more months of 'less than regularly'. Coffee and refreshments help keep one active at all the alternative outdoor activities. Lack of daily sunshine is the price we pay for year-round moderate temps and relatively gentle weather systems in the lowlands.

I went to high school in Olympia and understand about not seeing the sun for many months of the year.

Sunshine is overrated . My wife and I spent a couple weeks in Tucson and were going nuts by the end from the unrelentingly bright sunlight (March). Every time going outside it was wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, and the sun beating on us through the car windows. Just a few clouds to provide a few minutes of shade would have been welcome.

Another thing about clouds is that they give some "depth" or "contour" to the sky, as well as motion, instead of just a big, blue dome overhead.

Never thought I'd be glad to get back to cloudy Michigan, but...

Around here we ride early in the summer months. Getting to the trail or wherever by 6-7AM is a must, unless you want to suffer in the heat.

Clouds are nice but I'd rather have a slight breeze in the summer months. In the late fall, winter and spring we get LOTS of wind. But by late April the only wind is from a passing car.

Speaking of which, I'm still trying to get out for the first time this year but we had snow again overnight! Now I'm looking at Thursday afternoon when it might actually get near 70. FWIW, I'm not an all-season biker and don't ride when I know I'll be uncomfortable, so mid-50s is about my limit, but we haven't even had any of that when it wasn't also raining. :-(

I wondered what it would be like at 80 years old, I've had some time to get used to it. The motivation is still there, but I had to change a few things. I still consider myself a bicycle enthusiast, however, I had to take my back problem into consideration, so I am now a stand-up scooter rider and take some of the strain away from bending for hours
I found out how different standing and stepping on the Me=Mover was, how my muscles had to adjust, and adjust I did about 2 years ago. For one thing, everything happens quicker, heart rate increases within minutes without sprinting, when I do sprint, I can feel the aerobic conditioning, again quick. I can carve, take Z turns with ease at speed and appreciate the stability under the worst of conditions.
I miss biocyle riding, but the Me-Mover made me a believer.

Finally got my first ride of the year in yesterday with 13 miles on my favorite local rail-trail. With the weather we've been having, this is the latest first ride that I can recall, and I can see that at 71 it will take longer to get back into cycling shape than it used to. The difference this year is that, although I've been able to keep up with some running over the winter, I did not do my usual spinning class at all, and it shows. Definitely some sore quads this morning!

So as cycling takes over more and more from running as my primary fitness activity, I'm going to be sure that I keep doing it in some form all year long. By the way, when I go to one of these classes, I often don't follow what the instructor is telling us to do (not sure that doing "jumps" relates to what I'm trying to achieve), but just being obligated to spend a specific length of time in a group pedaling continuously generally does the job for me.

I've been riding along the Gulf coast from a campground in Mississippi, but now that I'm home in Maine, I realize that all that flat riding doesn't really get a 71 yo in shape for the hills.

Getting ready for my birthday ride. Finally found a stretch of mostly safe road (nice wide shoulder) without many ups. Only the section between Creede and South Fork is dangerous - but not much traffic mid May. In fact mostly down hill. Link is my most favorite website.

But when I get to the bottom, I will have turn around and go back up to make my 79 miles. Goal 100 miles.

yea, gotta agree with ya on ths one but what is enjoyable is year round riding here in the southwest.

Here's one for Wildwood. In between the snow and spring, you can almost see into Canada from central NY.

It's not the distance, it's the hills. Two good ones and some trail riding.
