Reason for Butt Ache.

Like several of us here- I have had my share of Saddle/Butt discomfort. This summer I have mainly been riding the TCR and that has a San Marco "Aero" saddle fitted. Just a little bit of padding- narrow nose and it is comfortable. This bike has temporarily been passed onto my Son-In-Law and is now set up for him- so I am back on Boreas. Have to admit that this is the better bike of the two so I am not that disapointed. The saddle on Boreas is a Selle "Max Gel" and that is a very similar shape to the "Aero" and was just as comfortable. Couple of weeks ago and I started to feel the nadge of butt pain. Not much but tried to find out where the pain was coming from.

Sat back- whilst riding of course- and tried to analyse it. The sit bones were not fully back on the wide part of the saddle and in fact I was not sitting on the sit bones. Pressure was being put on the Pubic bone and was causing the problem. Pushed myself back into the saddle to get the sit bones right and back onto the top of the bars to bring the body and butt more upright. Seemed to ease the pain so last weekend I adjusted the saddle. Pulled it 1/2" further forward and dropped the nose just a fraction. Sat on the bike and lowered the nose just a bit further. No ride last week due to a certain amount of Precipitation in the Air. It persisted down all weekend.

Today I did 50 miles on that new position. It works. So after the ride on Boreas- I went out on the TCR with the saddle wrongly set up. Only did 15 miles and the only adjustment was to set the saddle height right. Saddle was just a bit too far back and within 5 miles the pain was back. Had the tools with me so adjusted the saddle forward and dropped the nose a bit. Perfect.

Now I know some saddles are notorious for causing Butt pain and you have to get the right width of saddle for your butt- But I am starting to think that most Saddle pain is caused by the saddle not being properly set up for the rider. So if this is your problem- Start trying to analyse what the problem really is. Now all I have to do is get the neck pain I started to feel corrected- But I think that is going to be more down to lack of riding time than mere bike adjustment.

Lack of a recumbent style "lazy boy recliner' type seat is the usual cause. bk
