After 45 years of cycling (which has spanned AAU competition, one RAAM, countless thousands of miles of loaded touring and now morning club rides)it's a fact.
Cycling has a caste system.
If you want folks who wave and want to sts with you while riding, join a leisurely cycling group simply out for a nice ride. Or, join a touring group (when you're going to be on the road for days with the same folks you better ditch any attitude)
If you think-because you have a bicycle and can stay upright on it-you're going to get acknowledgement from the local peloton you are going to be sorely disappointed.
There are clubs (one in my area comes to mind)where the top guns in the club don't even acknowledge other club riders if those riders arn't in their A group. Matter of fact the entire club has a pecking order.
Little things down to how you ride can make a difference in someone throwing up 4 fingers from his or her grip on the bars and ignoring you completely.

You're out and enjoying life and maintaining a level of fitness..
That should be all that matters.

I like to see others on bikes and I always wave and say something smart if thay dont,/sometimes.//I have know good reason why one biker would not ecknowledge a biker./ I have a mean old off road jeep and jeep folks wave there arms off at one another.

I look at other riders and if I see that they are looking at me at the same time then a wave.
I have a streetrod and rodders wave at each other too.

I'll wave or at least give a head nod to other riders. I don't get too upset at those who don't wave or gesture back, as I'm kind of "Freddie" looking when I ride. Usually just a wicking, loose fitting t-shirt, athletic wicking shorts(also loose), and my road bike has platform pedals that I ride in regular tennis shoes. I may even have a Camelback hydration pack on(oh the crime, a camelback being used on a road ride!) I'm more of a casual, out to enjoy the ride and scenery type rider, and ride to achieve some level of fitness, but not into seeing if I can ride a route faster than the last time, or if I can ride a certain distance. When I ride, it's usually just to enjoy the day, the bike, and being able to get out, relax, get some exercise, and see what I can see. So if I'm having a good time, and someone chooses not to acknowledge my well wishes to them, well, that's just not my problem.

The only thing I can think of that's worse than waving at another cyclist and not having them wave back - is coming on this board and moaning about it!

On a cold, wet, winter commute into downtown Seattle, I might see only 2 or 3 other bikers. We'll typically nod or wave. But sometimes if it's raining and the wind is blowing it's enough just to keep concentrating on riding. At stoplights other commuters almost always say "hi" or engage in a brief chat. A portion of my commute includes a MUP and frequently I'll end up meeting and chatting with other commuters along the MUP (weather, gear, favorite routes, etc.).

Yesterday I took a long ride, weather was nicer (35 degrees, no wind, no rain at the start) and I saw well over 100 bikers, maybe 200. Some waved, most didn't.

When the weather is nice here there are so many bikes on the road it's really not unusual to come across another biker, and if you expected everyone to wave at you you'll be disappointed a couple of hundred times a day.

I have recently noticed that pedestrians are more unfriendly on the whole than roadies. I don't understand that one, I can always circle back and give them the old Cinzano.

Riders around here generally nod or lift a finger as other riders go by on the MUPs. Yes, there are exceptions for a number of reasons and I don't get worked up about it or make too many assumptions if it doesn't happen for some reason. I have noticed more stuffiness around here in certain bike shops where the workers are aloof and seem to judge you based on who knows what (maybe by age and weight, I'm guessing).
