Yes, I did okay, but I had no idea the DNF rate was that high. Climbing back out of Death Valley the SAG truck went by with eight (yeah, I counted) bikes on the roof, so I knew some riders were out . . . but 50%?
Every report I've read of this ride has described is the most. miserable. ride. ever. I can't decide if you all deserve medals of recommendation or commitment to a mental institution. I'm impressed by you who finished it, and have sympathy for those who pulled the plug early

I wouldn't call it The Most Miserable Ride Ever, and since I was dressed for it, the whole ride really wasn't that bad. I did feel sorry for those riders who were way under-dressed for the conditions but I guess old age and experience do count for something after all. Oh, and don't worry, the weather will be fine for Knoxville

176 Riders were brave/stupid (take your pick) enough to actually start the ride.
103 Riders stuck it out and finished!
Dante had a tough ride, but finished in 16 Hours 30 minutes.
Mine went a bit better, and I finished in 14 Hours, 7 minutes.
To the best of my current knowledge, Dante and I were the only 50+ forumites to finish.

Yes I did! When I got to the top of the climb in the snow, mile 36?, all the riders around me dropped out. Was it something I said? The closest rider in front of me was over an hour ahead by the time I got back to rest stop #3. From there to the end I did no help in the wind, and there was a lot of wind, or with pace lining. It made it tough riding on to Benton and never seeing a rider in front of me. I did finally catch and pass a rider at the last rest stop, I thought I would never do that.

It probably was something you said! But don't worry about it, everyone has to make their own decision whether to bail (abandon) or carry on. Good to hear you decided to carry on!
Plus, it's great that you passed that other rider because it kept you from being DFL
.Now that I'm all rested, recovered and relaxed I'm thinking the ESD really wasn't that bad. Good thing I have a bad memory for all the pain and suffering
. Seriously though, I was dressed for the cold and that was probably my biggest advantage over all the DNS and DNF riders.Rick / OCRR
