Riding Without Doctor's Assent
On March 14 I crashed my bike in a century and have been on the trainer or the tandem (with modified stoker bars) since.
My teammate and BFF invited me to ride with her on Friday. I threw caution to the wind and joined her. We rode through orchards and tomato and sunflower fields for about 35 miles. We hit some rollers on the last couple miles home and I had no adverse effects. My 10-wk. post-op visit in 6/17 but obviously I couldn't wait for my doctor's cleanance. The weather has been perfect, and I'd had all I could tolerate of riding in my garage on the trainer.
It was glorious! I felt like I recaptured something I lost in the crash. My soul needed that.
So on Saturday Chris and I rode over Cantelow, a major climb, and accumulated 30 reasonably-fast miles.
Today we did some climbs, one of which I've never done. I didn't reach the top but was happy with 2.5 mi. at 8.3%grade. The descent made my healing wrist ache, so I limited myself on the climbs but was happy overall. It's hard to describe how happy I am that I can manuever my bike, barely hang on, and still succeed a difficult ride. I was dropped, sure, but Chris made sure that I had encouragement at every detriment to the climbs and sprints, so I pretty much worked harder than I'd planned to work, but not to the point where I was overworked.
It's good to be back!

Depending what happened to your wrist, be careful. Some injuries are very hard to heal as they don't get a good blood supply, so rushing it could be bad. Double check with your MD and physical therapist. Many a pro motocrosser was retired due to a busted navicular, so be careful.

3 months is a long time - the fact you were able to keep up by riding the trainer is great, good inspiration. I recall reading about your mishap several times, surprised it has taken this long and still not quite 100%. Glad to hear your back!

My next appt. with my surgeon is this Wed. I hope to get the all-clear to start strength-training on some level. Four weeks of physical therapy is paying off as my range of motion is returning nicely.
Thanks for your concern.
