36.5 miles, 2,400 +change elevation in the back country of central NY, to Erieville on Tuscarora lake. A drinking village with a fishing problem. And a great place to stop.

55 miles with 32 miles being in a nice group. Will probably go a little longer tomorrow.

I got in 62 miles early morning miles with lots of climbing. Glad I got it done before the crushing heat and humidity. I forgot to take pics until my last stop - look

at the size of this moth! The pic doesn’t do it justice at all.....

Met a guy on Specialized Venge doing a loop from Harrisonburg, which is two brutal climbs across the Shenandoah Nat’l Park. He was a little lost and asked for directions. That’s gotta be 120 miles and maybe 10,000 feet of climbing!

Daughter (+ family) moving to new house about 18-20 miles away based on the route.
Being a Sat, I scouted the route that has the most M-F commuter traffic, but also a pretty good shoulder.
More traffic than I expected and more rocks + debris right of the white line.

Finished 35 mi with some hills putting me in the 42/26 a couple of times.
Only stopped for 1 pic, rode the '78 Mondia Super.
Comfy, perfect size, easy to the drops.
Running 30mm Schwalbe tubulars on the paved+gravel route.

Exceeded the speed limit at times.

Out early for a strenuous 65 miler with lots of climbing. I decided to take the Giant Defy this morning, and it’s still one of my faves. I actually prefer the slightly more relaxed geometry, and it’s a bit more stable at high speed descents because of the longer wheelbase.

My climbs included Weakley Hollow, Etlan and Duet Road (killers, both of them), Hebron Valley and Quaker Run. And the road I live on is a half mile steep grade.......

7/26/2012 good friend Pete Cornell was killed when hit by a semi. He a 2 others had a bit over 700 miles to ride to complete their Prudhoe Bay to Key West bike journey. My Memorial Ride was 103 miles today. Also placed a Crank Sport e-Gel in his hands as usual >>>

Another 50 miler up to the in-laws at the lake. 100+ miles over 2 days seemed so much easier than 100+ miles in just one day. Go figure.

Only 25 mi, so only 90 for the week. Was awful hot and muggy.

Yay! I finally broke the 40 mile mark for my weekend rides! Back to Horseshoe Lake. Temperature was 98 out. I sure was happy for all the shade along the way.

I rode from the Seastreak ferry in Highlands, NJ to Gunnison Beach in Sandy Hook and then back after laying on the beach all day. I just checked and it is 7 miles each way and didn't think it was that far as I purposely left my computer at home. Except for the bridge it is flat as a pancake. Most of it is along the beach. We stopped at a seafood restaurant on the waterfront on the way back to the ferry. It was a really hot ride with no shade as you can imagine along a beach. I normally don't ride when it is this hot, but I was with my wife and she barely breaks 10mph, so it was slow.

Lots of short rides lately

With our Northern Virginia heat riding in the afternoon is not the smartest thing for a senior to do, so my usual riding buddy and I have been going out early in the AM. Since he works (I’m retired), we go for short 10’ish miles almost every day. Also since he works, I get to do solo rides which are longer, 15-20 miles usually. We try to schedule longer rides for the weekends, weather permitting. It’s not been too permitting lately. Our last 30 miler was in June.

Getting decent exercise, just not a huge amount.

Got to start doing some upper body exercises. Since this Covid crap, my arms and shoulders have really gotten skinny. The wife says I'm starting to look like my dad did.

wthensler 07-28-20 09:11 AM

I managed 62 by getting out at 6:30 on the Bianchi. It’s been ridiculously hot And humid here in VA, and I couldn’t ride due yesterday due to a late start. I noticed the Bianchi doesn’t go into the smallest rear cog when on the small ring....hmmm.....

Both bikes need a bit of love as I’ve been hammering away relentlessly - almost 800 miles this month so far.

I am intrigued by a recent discovery of some gravel trails that are rideable and go all the way up to Skyline. I may have to invest in a nice gravel bike. How do I tell the wife? I’ve way overspent this year already.

Banff Legacy Trail

My wife and I spent a couple of days in Banff, Alberta and cycled the Legacy Trail starting from the visitor's information center in Canmore to the Banff townsite and back.Total distance was approximately 50k return. We attempted this ride last year but were turned back midway as it rained profusely and the wife was battling a bad cold at the time. We got off to a relatively early start and found the first leg of the trip towards the Banff townsite to be pleasantly cool with noticeably fewer cyclists that we would have expected. As the mercury started to rise on the return leg, the trail became a bit busier and as we rode back into the start point the parking lot was virtually full of parked vehicles with most cyclists just starting out or already on the trail. Temperature was 31C.

Definitely recommend this ride if you are ever visiting the area...post COVID naturally.

Tips: Get off to an early start and recommend starting the ride at Canmore as the return leg from Banff is easier on the legs. https://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

My apology for the lack of context in the pics as I was more focused on avoiding any incidents with fellow cyclists on the pathway. Several of these shots were taken of my wife as she pedaled by.

Out early for a 65 mile ride, chock full of climbs and rollers. Madison Co., VA has got to have some of the best riding hands down, if you’re willing to put up with a few grinders. The views, sounds, smells, and relatively empty roads make for very pleasant riding.

Was out by 6:30 AM and took the Defy, which handles the climbs and descents with ease. Im close to 1,000 miles for July if I get in two more good rides like today......

This is about the halfway point, a good place to take in some hydration before the long trek into the mountains.

Until Gov. Little resinds his (Covid-19) lock down on assisted living facilities, I can't leave the property without getting quarantined. (even if I wear a mask)
So, no riding for me until at least late August, when he might lift the lockdown.
I'm not going to hold my breath that he does.
I think I got in two rides last spring before Covid hit.
Both were under a measly 10 miles round trip.

I have the perfect excuse to ‘commute’ 40 mi per day, on good weather days. My daughter and her family (with a bounding toddler) now live 20 miles away instead of 190mi in Portland.

Arrived at 10A to help with unloading the first Pod. Nice big house - Darn = Lots of boxes. So I took the shortest route getting there and was surprised at the lack of auto traffic, opposite the commute direction.

Rode the ‘78 Batavus w/ Campa9 triple (there are a couple of hills) as I hate to grind, with old knees I would like to keep original.

Still pretty full - the Pod - upon my arrival. Heavy lifting time.

Logged 230 miles Monday through Friday, all In the hills and mountains of VA. Here’s a shot from Etlan Road just before a very steep 1 mile climb through a mountain pass to the village of Etlan. I remember this very same view (sans bike) 40 years ago when we’d camp in Shenandoah National Park.

15+ miles on a beautiful day, though the wind was pretty solidly from ESE, off Lake Michigan, at 10 mph. I got a pacemaker 4 weeks ago today. That was followed by some dental work that didn't achieve its goal and the extraction of a molar. This was my first enjoyable ride since then. My doc's nurse practitioner isn't too happy about it, because I cut my first couple of rides short, due to burning at the incision site. Today I felt fine. I slowed down after about 10 miles, and I was going none too fast before then. :) I felt great getting on the bike again, especially on a day like today.

I had started the 5 minute plank regime before the pacemaker implant. Two more weeks, and my doc says I can go back ti it. I hope to end this season riding with ligt hands.

3 days with 20 and change on each. It's all I have time for these days. And now there's another heat wave on the way.
