It's amazing to me how many times I do a ride where my spedometer is at nearly all times between 18 and 2x MPH but the average speed turns out to be 17.5. It's because of all the slowing before stops/turns and accelerating afterwards. They really have an impact. That's why many would probably say that avg speed on a road course isn't a very meaningful statistic.........(except that it's meaningful to us)
Tonight I did a 31 miler and I was in the 20+ a lot but I was also down to 12 at times too, hills and then there is this one short road where it seems that is all I can get and do not know why, but anyway I decided to can the high avg speed thing thinking I would be low 17's. Ended up right at 18. weird. I believe I could do a high one riding in a group dynamic situation. |
46 warm miles today Temp 94*

Did a track workout today which is the last one here before heading to Frisco, TX on Sunday to compete in the US Masters Nationals Track Championships. Today was about topping up speed, spin and power and working on standing starts and floating the second lap in pursuit. I did some over speed work behind the motor. I am so ready.

I've got the State Master's Championship Road Race tomorrow and will be heading out the door in 10 minutes for a 1.5 hr prep ride. ***** OK, I'm back. 26.5 miles in Z2 @ 95 cadence with a couple Z3 accelerations = 19.9 ave mph. I'm ready to crush the souls of some older gentlemen.;) |
13 miles, that's it. Yesterday felt great for a rest day and was planning on going into a 65 to 70 mile ride when my daughter gave me a call and asked if i could be home between 1 and 4, she had an important delivery and i said OK. So i thought i would just do 45 miles and change my route. Got up late, putzed around and left at 9:30, weather perfect. Just down the block is a small park with the gate to the Rio Hondo river trail. It was locked! WTF. Decided to go north about a mile and a half and hope that gate would be open, it was. Just going along for about 7 miles and the trail was closed for bridge repair. Turned around and thought i will head to Long Beach. Just before the cross over bridge some county workers are trimming the bushes and cleaning out the sides of the trail. There is debris everywhere, old branches, dried leaves and junk. Well i hit a rock, phissss, look at my front tire which is clunking and see two thorns stuck in it. Stop and pull out the the thorns and am not worried because i am very close to my house. Only the gates is still locked with no way for me to get my bike over. South a bit is a RR bridge with just enough room to get my bike through and carry my bike to a hole in the park fence. I get to my house after a bit of a walk and just turn the rest of the time into fixing three tubes. Hope tomorrow turns out better. Perfect weather.

13.5 miles today 356.7 miles this month 4474 miles this year 144 ride days LY vs. 144 ride days TY 3025 miles needed to hit 2010 goal (7500 miles) I am @ 59% of my goal. I need to be @ 66.6% (5000 miles) by the end of August 121 miles ahead of last year at this date This month is not going my way at all . Today I had hoped to get about 30 so I left the house about 7:45 am. I road to my Dr. Office to set up a follow up appointment and get my monthly B12 shot. While putting my gloves and helmet on I noticed a rather large crack in the side wall of my rear rim. Now this is not good, but it was only the start of my troubles. I headed on over to the local bike shop to see what could be worked out. I got their about 8:45 and they didn’t open until 10 am so I headed on to the local Panera (not my regular one) for some breakfast and coffee. I sat at Panera until 10 then road back to the LBS. I went ahead and replaced both rims, tubes and tires and rim tape (Credit card took a big hit). They finished up about 12:00 so I headed out to try and get a few miles in. Stepped over the bike put my foot in the clip went to shove off and the crank just spun clear around. Back inside for a new bottom bracket and another hit on the credit card. Finally got home about 1:30. Five and a half hours and 13.5 miles today. These short rides are just blowing my averages away. August 2009 was a 750 mile month for me last year and I will be hard pressed to get 500 miles this August. Please send all sympathy cards to my Orlando address. |

Found my best pair of shorts today. Been lost for 2 months due to house moving. So gave them a 30 mile ride today. My longest to date in this ride shortened year. I should rest tomorrow for the Shoo-Fly Classic ride on Sunday; but I'm thinking a breakfast ride would be ok.

Did just a very quick 15.2 miles so I could say I rode. Out Route 66 and up San Dimas Canyon and back to the house. Not much climbing, just under 1,000 feet. Was nice to ride in cooler weather for a change. Can't wait for tomorrow afternoon, as Mr Beanz talked his wife Gina into going up GMR. Should be even cooler weather and a good time.:50:

60 mile out and back on the C&O canal, from Cumberland through the Paw Paw tunnel and back. Rode the cross bike with wide tires and a rack. The weather was great, and it was nice to do this, but frankly it wasn't my cup of tea. It was dead flat, and not too many curves, and I was really beaten up by the surface. I'm glad to have done it, but I think I'll be sticking to the roads for awhile. Even the worst chip seal doesn't beat me up as much as trail riding.

Oddly enough, I did ride today. i'm on a 4-day business trip to Long Island and didn't expect to be able to ride at all. But today I was able to find a few hours in the afternoon. I went to an LBS in Farmingdale that rents bikes. If it isn't the only one on Long Island, it's the only one that I found using the Google. To my disappointment, all their road bikes were reserved (for a triathalon - who knew that people rented bikes to compete in triathalons?), so I settled for a fat-tired comfort bike. It was an Al-framed Schwinn and it felt like riding a cushy truck. WAY different from my regular ride, but much better than not riding. And I rather enjoyed about 20 miles up and down a nice shady bike trail parallel to Bethpage Parkway.

18 miles to and from work yesterday. Lots and lots of motorcycles in downtown Indy for the Moto GP. A few bikers gawked at the recumbent.
20 mile ride today with youngest (22) son, who's in his first year of cycling. He's going to try at least one day of the Hilly Hundred in October. |
You guys are all riding road bikes, or are any of you on mountain bikes? At age 63, I think I've put in a big day when I ride 40+ miles on my Xizang mountain bike. Big tires give me a serious workout. But unless the weather is horrible, I ride some every day. New girlfriend is taking up lots of my spare time right now, though. So last week I talked her into buying her own bike and coming along. I need to be patient as she builds strength and skill.

24 miles on the tandem with some climbing. Unusually windy, but temps were mild. One of the "local" clubs is having a 65 mile ride on Labor Day in Marin County about 2 hours from us - should be a winner, but the traffic could be bad. had to do a spin class last week while on travel - ugh!

55 miles today on a mostly-flat club ride. Started to get hot the last 20 or so miles. 17.3mph is the fastest I've ridden a longish ride - was able hang with a group in the 20-24mph range for 10-15 miles early on. Pulled a fellow who was running out of steam the last 12 miles.
