At the Y:
First, I warmed up for 5 min. on the stair mill.
Then, 50 min. of weightlifting.
Topped it off with 12 min./4 miles on the stationary bike.

Cold front coming in tonight, so I got out this afternoon while it was still 40 degrees. 17.33 miles, 13.2mph, 1407 ft elevation gain here near the Appalachians of western Maryland.

canklecat 12-15-16 02:50 AM

38 miles Wednesday night. Didn't really feel like riding at first but joined a group ride that pushed me out of my comfort zone and felt a bit better afterward.

mort1369 12-15-16 11:52 AM

Just a short hop to the junkyard and back on the hybrid, maybe 4mi. . .

John_V 12-15-16 03:42 PM

42 miles today in some really nice Florida weather. Had some issues with my sinuses from this lingering cold that I can't seem to get rid of but other than that, the ride was great. Ran into an old cycling friend that recently returned from a trip to Italy and Sweden so I rode my last 17 miles with her as she told me all about her trip.

seedsbelize 12-15-16 05:53 PM

36 km.

OldTryGuy 12-15-16 07:26 PM

5 mile ride to the group start but the gathered geezers wouldn't shut up and start riding so I headed out by myself. Got 11 miles on my own when paths crossed with 3 lead riders so I turned around and hoked on. Another 5 miles and 2 of them pulled off so we were down to 2, the 44yo Brooklyn Kid and 66yo me. Ride another 35 miles and THE KID pulls off after only pulling for 2 miles. Another 11 miles easing on back to the house for 67. hope my math was good

Ronno6 12-15-16 09:17 PM

Sambo and I waited til about 1pm for things to warm up....they never really dod.
So, after a sparse riding schedule over the past 4 weeks or so, we did 22 "easy," breezy, chilly miles in the sunshine.

John_V 12-16-16 03:29 PM

I needed 56 but ended up doing 57 miles and hit 10,001 miles for the year with two more weeks of riding left. Rode with my buddies Frankie and Marcel. Don't know what was going on with Marcel today but we couldn't get him to go faster than 15 mph. He left us at the halfway point of the ride so Frankie and I picked it up a little on lap two. It wasn't much faster but better than the speed of lap one. I didn't there was such a person but I finally found someone that's slower than Frankie. :D

LouB 12-16-16 04:33 PM

arghhh. yes I rode...down to the pharmacy to get some anti biotics to get rid of this %%$#n cold/cough:mad: so I can ride!

Wow John_V, you have almost double my miles. Of course - Florida.

Super winds (30-50mph) and lotza rain yesterday, so no ride. Weather site said snow and wind for today, it was sunny and barely a breeze. I did encounter a headwind on the way home.

The Truckee River was up to its banks (during the summer you could walk across and not get the tops of your shoes wet) and it overspilled onto the bike path. I rode (slowly) through a shallow part, but 25 feet ahead I ended up in a 6mph current up to my calves, almost to the wheel hubs. Trying to turn the bike around in that current was fun. So I ended up riding home with soaking wet shoes and socks (brrrr). Cut the ride short to 13.5 miles (21.7k).

A combination of Florida and retirement.

Did a nice, windy, short, solo ride this morning. The wife missed going to the grocery store yesterday so I didn't want her to wait too long in the parking lot for me. I ended up doing 25 miles but I did manage some nice intervals while riding the loop.

Greybeard712 12-17-16 02:00 PM

Instead of Bicycle Boy I was Popcicle Boy this morning. 18° to start the ride at 9AM, but plenty of (frozen) sunshine.
22 miles (35.4k) for an overall nice ride. No foot deep wading, but there were some icy patches and a section 4-5 inches deep in sand (turned around there).

Wasn't going to ride today because of an early morning errand I needed to run. At 4:30 am I decided what the heck, the temp was as warm as it would be for the next couple of days. I geared up and headed out in the dark.

14 mi. 14º and 15 mph winds. Each time I ride these Kenda Kniptions I am pleasantly surprised how well they do in varying conditions. This morning it was a light snow layer over ice over the last light show.

Excellent! Just what I needed to hear (read). I've been debating whether to get out on my Pug Orient Express, as I'm running those same tires on it. I've got some Boshield T9 I can spray on the frame first, and then I think I'll give it a go. Although not tonight or tomorrow, we are going deep below zero; around -20° tonight. But it's supposed to warm up into the +20s next week. That will be a fun commute. Thanks! :thumb:

Only two or three miles to the LBS to buy two chains to replace the old one on the comfort hybrid I began with last year. Turns out the chain line on that long wheelbase bike needs two chains -- it's just a few links short even with a 116 link chain. So I'll splice together a couple of inexpensive KMC chains.

On the way home a wind gust blew a plastic grocery bag into my rear derailer as I was crossing wide boulevard -- fortunately traffic was light so I got across safely to cut the bag loose.

More than the usual excitement for such a short ride.

Forecast today was for a 55 degree temperature drop between the noontime peak and evening. Sounded improbable but it sure happened. The temperature dropped from the mid-60s when I left home to nearly 40 in only 30 minutes, and was below freezing after sunset. It's 23 degrees now at 11 pm and may go below 20 by midnight.

John_V 12-18-16 01:05 PM

73º at 7:00 AM. Met the gang, Lou, Tony, Frankie and Wendell, and left for a really good 44 mile ride. Finally got a really good workout even with 20+ mph wind gusts. Need to do more faster, harder ride.

Greybeard712 12-18-16 02:14 PM

About the same temp as yesterday (18° - brrr) but I wore a warmer jacket yesterday. What I didn't count on was the cold headwind today. Cut the ride to 15.6 miles (25.1k). If it wasn't for the excellent VA facility here (#1 in the country) I'd consider moving to a warmer climate.

10 miles Sunday night at 23F, just a casual 10 mph to see the neighborhood holiday lights and see how a cold weather ride felt. My first beardcicle... icecycle? Noticed it when I took off the face mask. But it didn't feel as cold as I'd expected -- temp was 23F outside, wind chill a bit lower. First time I'd ridden a bicycle in below-freezing weather since I was a kid in New York. Never got a beard icicle then. I didn't have a beard.

Curious to know whether my winter gear was adequate. Fingers got chilly first, as expected -- gloves were insulated but not windproof. I lost the windproof Gore-Tex mitten shells I had years ago when I rode a motorcycle. Need to get another set of windproof shells.

My 44 year old Herman Survivor boots are still pretty warm (got 'em when I was 15, still wear 'em), so my toes didn't get tingly until the last couplafew miles. I have some toe covers but they're not large enough for these old leather boots. I might try some of those chemical powder foot warmers next cold ride.

My old Columbia Gore-Tex and Thinsulate parka is almost too much for bicycling -- I was toasty at first, then a bit steamy, but didn't get chilled. Might just need to open the bottom zipper a bit more and skip the wind flaps over the zipper.

[If you really want to know]

Greybeard712 12-19-16 02:51 PM

19° to start, sunny, no wind, a cold but pleasant 20.4 mile (32.8k) ride. The next three days should be good, maybe a little wind, storm (rain/snow) on the way Thursday afternoon.

37 F and 8 miles of Christmas shopping, This was 10 degrees warmer than my last ride, with winds lowered by 40 mph. Quite a different experience -- felt warm.

Blues Rider 12-20-16 10:06 AM

At the Y this morning:
1.) 27:41 (126 floors) on the stair mill.
2.) 20 min./6.3 miles on the stationary bike.

Maybe I'll take my one-speed cruiser out for spin soon. The temps will be crawling up above zero Fahrenheit in the next few days.

Bob Ross 12-20-16 11:44 AM

Commuted to work today. I'll wind up with ~20 miles r/t. But cot day-um it's cold out there! 19°F with a Wind Chill/"Real Feel" temp of 12°F. fml
