25 miles before work. Did a popular local loop "in reverse" which offered some fascinating insights into road conditions: E.g., when climbing slowly I had the opportunity to observe that the pavement on one hill is so completely chewed up that I really have no business whatsoever descending at speed when I ride this loop in the normal direction!

John_V 12-06-17 05:50 PM

Had some gorgeous Florida weather for a 60 mile ride with all four of my cycling buddies at one time. That's something I don't get to do very often.

canklecat 12-06-17 11:26 PM

20 miles Wednesday evening. Hadn't planned to ride but needed to vent some stress. Had to remind myself to take it easy, not turn it into another exhausting hard workout or self-competition. Felt much better afterward.

Bob Ross 12-07-17 07:28 AM

Commuted today.

John_V 12-07-17 03:01 PM

Took the bike out of the van and went to put air in the tires when I noticed a cut in the rear tire. Don't know how deep it was so I didn't want to chance riding on it and I really didn't want to fix it there. The wife wasn't riding so I pulled out her trike and did a nice 30 mile solo ride just before the rain started. Pretty foggy at the start and eventually went away but the sun never came out. Overcast and gloomy. :(

OldTryGuy 12-07-17 04:36 PM

fog, FOG and more FOG this AM put a kibosh on the 7:25AM start with the guys so I waited until 8AM and then headed out. Managed to do the math in what's left of the grey matter between my ears and 24 miles into the ride I met lead man of Team Ghost Rider. Hooked on to his wheel for some punishment until I could take no more. The following group then passed so I re-hooked and made it to the rest stop. Back out at a much more leisurely 21/22mph until another gas station stop then headed back to the barn.

Had hoped to ride a metric century today after Tuesday's tiring 156 miles but just couldn't get off the bike since the weather was so nice and a super cold front is to be here this weekend. Got back in the barn, garage :), with 101 miles. No fog predicted for Saturday morning so I'll try a 3:00AM or 4:00AM start and maybe get another 100 miler in.

TimothyH 12-07-17 05:27 PM

I rode a 48-16 fixed gear for 1.5 hours on rollers.

28.2 miles @ 18.7 MPH

55 Miles. Weather web page said it would be 50°, it was 32° at the start, 22° an hour later. Blue skies but the juniper trees were shinny white covered with frost. It was quite a spectacular site. Ice crystals falling out of a blue sky. Then I rode into thick cold frozen fog, temps dropped fast. My water bottles froze. I had 2 of those iron, salt charcoal disposable hand warmers in my each of my gloves which kept my hands from freezing, but my fingers were still very cold. Stopped at a country store an hour from home in a very small town. bought a warn blueberry muffin and they thawed my water bottles and filled one with hot water. Great ride! Only 170 miles from breaking 6,000 miles for the year, 22 days left to ride them, I hope it doesn't snow. it's been years since I broke 6,000.

PaddleFoot 12-09-17 06:10 AM

Cool report, John00. Good luck with your 6000!

Snow on the ground here and constant forecast cold temps. Indoors until there is no chance of ice. One slip can ruin a life. Will have 1000 indoor miles much sooner than I thought. Not having to stop and go as in outdoor riding is one good point about Zwift. I am feeling very 'at home' on my Kona Wheelhouse. Miles go by effortlessly and it will be my credit card touring bike.

Bob Ross 12-09-17 11:26 AM

Ha! Yes...for 3.5 miles. It's been snowing for the past six hours, and I foolishly thought it would still have that fun, fluffy, light feel that makes winter riding so exquisite. I think I got out about five-and-a-half hours too late; it's all big wet sticky flakes, the roads are a complete slopfest, and while I won't say it was un-fun, it was definitely far less fun than I'd been hoping for. 3.5 miles was enough.

River Ride: https://www.strava.com/activities/1308423477

Our standard local race ride. Fitness is coming around, feel like I can move around anywhere I want and never in danger, but no snap, just dieseling. Need to start working in shorter, sharper intervals after Xmas.

MidSouthBiker 12-09-17 04:23 PM

No ride today. We are experiencing our first polar front of the season this past week. Even though the temperature managed to get up to 45F today, the wind chill factor was not even close to that. It may take a while to get acclimated to this frigidness.

Down here in the Houston area we got our first real cold snap, took off and turned around for more clothes! 6 miles out my nose is running, face burning! I said phoohey on this and made a u-turn and straight to the house. I hate the cold.

OldTryGuy 12-10-17 05:59 AM

I had a 12:04AM departure this morning bundled up to the "T's" for our first good cold snap. Not cold by the rest of USA standards but for this transplanted Jersey old fogey, it was freezing. Managed 65 miles and found a nickle so a profitable ride for sure. Contemplating if I should head back out after the sun rises......maybe yes or maybe no.

John_V 12-10-17 06:50 AM

Haven't ridden in the last two days thanks to rainy days leading up to this cold snap we're getting today and tomorrow morning. Temps in the 30s right now and that's a bit too cold for this Florida boy. Temps are staying in the low-mid 40s getting into the low 50s by late afternoon. Early afternoon, tomorrow, is looking pretty good with temps in the 60s. May wait until then to ride or may put the bike on the trainer today and get the legs going for a bit.

Machka 12-10-17 07:36 AM

100 Miles. Our last century for this year's CAM.

MidSouthBiker 12-10-17 01:56 PM

The Arctic Blast is still upon us. I started out this morning @ 41F with a constant 15mph wind bringing down that wind chill factor, making it feel really cold. I wore two pairs of gloves, two shirts, and a cap under my helmet. I should have worn some long pants over the bike shorts, because my legs never did warm up. Anyway I got in exactly 2.0 hours, and glad I braved the elements today.

JanMM 12-10-17 02:46 PM

As previously mentioned by someone else, we've had some wintry weather hereabouts and today was my first ride since last Monday. 7 miles in sunny but 35F temps with some wind, too. More fun than time spent on recumbent exercise machine at the YMCA yesterday, by far.

ctpres 12-10-17 05:07 PM

Dusted off the road machine, aired tires, paired Edge 500 with speed cadence sensor and made a couple test shifts. 19.7 miles and ALL the numbers better. MTN bike covered for the winter. So happy!

Managed to get out for an afternoon ride. Temps warmed up a bit but still COLD....:D. Got in an additional 36 miles for a 101 mile day. 488 miles in 4 rides so far this month. Next ride should be Saturday for another Midnight Madness ride of 125 miles.

Bob Ross 12-11-17 08:49 AM

No, but I should have: Bomb scare/police activity at the Port Authority essentially shut down every train line in Manhattan, and my usual ~25 minute subway commute took almost two hours! :::angryface:::

Got in a nice 30 mile ride yesterday, although with all the salt and residual slush on the roads it will take me nearly as long to clean the bike as that ride took.

canklecat 12-11-17 04:04 PM

30 miles Sunday night, commuting to and from the hospital where my 79 y/o mom is recovering from surgery to fix a broken femur. It snapped the Sunday before while she was just walking in the apartment. Osteoporosis is cruel. Then the airway intubation and anesthesia temporarily paralyzed her mouth and throat so she needed a surgically implanted feeding tube for nourishment. But she was doing much better by last night, after a week in hospital.

It was a little chilly on the ride back home near midnight, low 40s, but I needed the ride and exercise. Won't get many chances to ride until mom is settled in a rehab facility.

Glad I kept my old inexpensive comfort hybrid/errand bike. If it gets stolen at the hospital it'll be hard for a thief to ride discreetly -- it's bright red and covered with stickers and odd, readily identifiable bits. The hospital bike rack is mostly used by homeless folks and transients, and every time I see the racks there are partial bikes semi-locked, missing wheels, etc. Doesn't appear that the hospital encourages bike commuting by employees, although it's now along one of the city's official bike lane routes.

John00 12-11-17 09:07 PM

51 Miles on another cold clear beautiful day. Started out at 30° finished it was 28°. Water in my regular bottle partially froze, water in my insulated bottle didn't. Had two disposable hand warmers in each glove, works well if I periodically pull my fingers out of the finger holes and wrap them around the warmers. The back muscle in my calf, the Gastrocnemius, is very painful, made me stop my ride 1 mile out yesterday. I hope I didn't really screw it up riding on it today. At 68 I guess everything needs to be treated gently.
