Sunny 50F day, but we still have those brisk NW cold winds. I tacked against the wind on the way out by trekking through some neighborhood roads going north, then west, then north, etc. When I finally got to my turnaround point on a major street, I headed back going east then south. Got in 90 minutes.
Last night I heard the weatherman on TV say our next major Arctic Blast should be in here in about 2 weeks or the first week of February. |
One of my riding buddies turned 64 earlier this month. Today was to be his birthday ride but things didn't go as planned. Between the starting temps in the low 50s and a very chilly, 10-12 mph northerly wind, we only managed 41 miles before my sinuses got the best of me. It should start warming up in the mornings again by the weekend so maybe we'll give the birthday ride another go.

I try to ride every day. At least 10 miles. When I tour I try to do at least 30 every day. I don't smoke, drink, do drugs (except aspirin). I usually ride 5000 miles or so every year. I am semi retired, will be getting social security next year.

40, very nice miles with one of my cycling teammates. It's been a while since I rode with him so today's ride was an especially good ride. I only wished that my sinuses would have cooperated the first 25 miles. :(

What a beautiful winter day! Temperature @ 60F and not a cloud in the sky. I was hoping to get in a two hour ride.
However, first thing this morning I had a optometrist appt for the annual eye exam, and they always dilate my eyes. I always hope for cloudy overcast skies on eye exam day, because the bright sun hurts my eyes and gives me a headache even with double sunglasses. I waited a couple hours after getting home and started out okay on the bike ride, but eventually the bright sunlight began taking its toll and began to hurt. I turned around, but still got in 66 minutes. |
< 1/2 Birthday Ride this afternoon. Twenty miles, which is longest ride since the end of November.
Had to stop on this hill because couldn't see what was on the other side - HILL BLOCKS VIEW. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4759/...373d7cdf_c.jpg |
18.3 miles (29.5k). Cold (29°) but sunny. The batteries in the wireless speedo decided to konk out so mileage is a guesstimate but pretty accurate. Even with recovering from shoulder replacement I've ridden more this Jan than last years' in climate weather.

Another gorgeous winter day in The MidSouth with an unseasonable temperature @ 60F. I got in 121 minutes.
With a brisk southerly wind I decided to head south to a regular neighborhood with nice long north-south oriented streets. So it was go north uphill with the wind, turnaround, and go south downhill against the wind. Both ways give a good workout. I then headed to a neighborhood I've never explored. It was a challenge with some really steep hills. After riding 7 days in a row my legs are begging for some rest. That may happen tomorrow if that front with rain comes in late tonight. |

I ride everything - tandem uprights, road bikes, recumbents, and trikes. The last three days have been on a trike. Still have ice on the lake.

Nope. Was hoping the get the stuff in the mail to finish installing the fenders etc on Darla, my Red Hornet so I can go out and not feel like I don't fit because I'll be a kid for a day.

16.4 miles (26.4k). Alternated between sunny and overcast. A little less cold than the previous few days.

CalAggie Crit, traditional opening race of the NorCal road season. I raced twice, pack finish in both, although I may have cracked the top ten in the 45+.
Good barometer of early season fitness. It’s one thing to watch wattage numbers on your Garmin, it’s another thing altogether to actually race. It was a nice day. My son raced the 9-14 Juniors race and was second. My wife came over to watch which was nice. |
Had a nice Polar Bear ride of ten miles today. Not very cold, about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, but raining. Good time.

The wife dragged me off to a sidewalk art festival yesterday, so no ride. This morning's solo ride was going along just fine until mile 17 when the wind picked up to 20 mph and stayed that way until the end of the 40 mile ride. Excellent workout.

20.8 miles (33.5k). Cold but sunny day, nice ride. Warmed up into the low 50s by 11:00. It sure is taking me a long time to get back in shape.

No ride yesterday, because the storm front brought in rain and wet roads much of the day.
But I got in 122 minutes today with temperature in mid 50's. However, the gusty northerly wind made it feel like the mid 40's. |
Got 10 miles on my new Sun Eco-Tad SX Recumbent Trike! :) :thumb:

69 miles on Friday, 63.9 today. Both down in southern Illinois. Weather was fantastic for January! Well, that is except for the brutal headwind on Friday's ride. Wind was straight out of the south 20-21mph with gusts of 29mph. The trip north was sweet. The flip trip was worse than any hills that I've done. Thankfully today had very little wind.
With these rides, I have ridden 240+ miles outdoors for the month of January. Who would have ever thought I'd do that in a winter month living in northern Illinois? P-4 is in the books. Now I can start to obsess about February's weather ;-) |
Congratulations on the new trike, it looks great. Thanks for the picture. They are a lot of fun.:thumb:
