Sunday was the annual Honolulu Century Ride. Pretty much typical weather for it. It rolls out at 0615 and heading out to east Honolulu got some trade showers here and there. Once I got over the Koko Head hill in Hawaii Kai, it was overcast but no rain, even though the windward side of the island is most likely to get you wet. The route is out-and-back and coming back after 1200 the sun was out full force and it was getting kind of hot. I managed to forget to pack my gloves when I loaded the car Saturday so now have a nice sun burn on the back of my hands. I had a rear flat due to a wire. I've had very good luck with Michelin pro endurance v2 tire and wasn't expecting the flat.
What was unusual this year is I witnessed about 5 tombay's (well, a couple may have been low-speed crashes). The most humorous one to witness (not so for the poor rider) was a guy stopped at the light. He managed to lean or something and the front wheel flopped over to the side so the drop bar hit or actually was slightly under or over the top tube. When he straightened the wheel out, it pulled the bar end plug out and it dropped to the ground. I think he was instinctively reaching for it and down he went. It seemed like most of the victims were Japanese (the ride is heavily promoted in Japan). Maybe these were rented bikes or something. A couple of them, when they went down they kind of ended up in the road and they didn't seem too concerned about getting out of the way (there is plenty of traffic on these roads). I ended up putting my bike kind of sideways behind them with me on it so at least cars could see me while other riders with Japanese language were able to get them moved to the side (finally!)
This ride has aide stations about every 12.5 miles and the food isn't all that but there is mechanical support at each one, which I used after my flat as I only carry a mini-pump. I knew I wouldn't have to kill myself pumping and just took it easy a couple miles till I got to a proper floor pump.
The touch screen on my Garmin 800 died last week. I was able to turn it on, but could only get to the default page. That actually worked OK, until towards the end the "low battery" alert flashed on and there was no way to turn it off (normally there is an "OK" label that you touch on the screen to clear it). I guess I am in the market for a new GPS -- was looking at the Edge Explore that seems like a possible replacement. The Edge 830 seems expensive and not very good reviews. Other than the screen crapping out I don't have any problems with the 800.

Rode 33.3 miles today. I have three routes all about 30 miles and today I did something a little different. First off I'm only riding a little over a month so much of what I know is probably wrong. Usually I try to stay in top gear, except on hills and then I try to stay on the 50 chain ring. On my bike that's 50/14. It's a Vilano and I think this model is basically a stripped down commuter bike. It's a little heavy but I'm just learning, and the bike is better than me for sure. Anyway today I shifted every time my cadence decreased on smaller elevation changes rather than grinding it out. I was doing that to try to increase leg strength and endurance. I have noticed improvement in those areas but probably would have anyway as I ride everyday. End result just about the same average time for the ride 15 MPH. Is it better to keep training in high gear or should one train like they would ride normally in a group.

18 leisurely miles Tuesday night, mostly to burn off sugar from a soft drink with burgers. Felt pretty good. Might try a longer ride this weekend.

Creeper

Road about 17 miles on the Creeper Trail. From Abingdon then back. I got a flat after turning around then another about 20 feet before the bridge at Abingdon. Also my 11 year old Topeak pump died. Lucky I had CO2 to top the tire off.

Trying to ride every third day. I try to make each ride longer than the last, but it requires a decent of 2500' and nearly ten miles. Then I get in my ride before climbing back up. It's been a challenge and a lot of fun. 685 miles since July.

Yesterday evening. I just did a quick 10 mile greenbelt ride after work on the 1974 Motobecane Grand Touring.

10/2/18, just over 20 miles in a high wind environment (over 15 mph from SE, S, SW, W, & NW) at all times. My route generally is NW out, SE back. In April, this sort of ride drives my heart rate through the roof. By June it's difficult. By the end of the Summer, I take it in my stride. 991 miles so far in 2018. 109 to reach my goal.

90F in the first week of October! It should be over 10 degrees cooler this time of year. But we will be missing these warm days come January.
Got in 100 minutes.

Expected rain this morning so drove to work. No rain. But got out for a ten mile ride after work which was nice.

Bikes: Bikes??? Thought this was social media?!?
Fewer rides per week with the wetter weather, but shooting for each ride to be 50km min.

Rode out into the farmland, about 15mi round trip. Pre-dawn start, sunrise finish. Went through some serious fog and discovered the amazing new scientific phenomenon called Wet Brakes Don't Work. Decided not to make that sharp turn into a neighborhood and just went on down the road until I rolled to a stop then wiped the brake track dry.

Out and about this morning. I did a quick 15 miles on the '74 Motobecane Grand Touring up and around the south side of Lewisville Lake north of DFW, TX near my house. The south wind was starting to pick up, as was a creaking noise coming from the left side of the spindle. Of course, it might have been me (the bike/rider combo is 95 years old). Discretion caused me to cut the ride short before I was forced to walk...

After yesterday's great workout ride and tomorrow's metric century, charity ride, this mornings ride had saving the legs as a priority. Nice and slow, 41 mile ride with my friends Frankie and Karen.

Hadn't ridden since last Sunday and decided to just go. I've been trying to ride 3-5x a week with a distance of around 20 miles. Unless you plan to ride back and forth across the 2 mile ridge between the valleys, every ride is roughly half up and half down what I consider to be tough hills. I start around 2100', ride down to 1-300' and then back up. I've gone the opposite - climbed 2000' or so then come back down, but I like going down first. No choice then but to do the climb.
Despite having a pedelec, I only did 11 miles today. Hip was giving me some trouble. First ride in cooler temps and I sure wished I'd dressed warmer.
Bike is charged and I'm going for 25 tomorrow.
