Just got back into fitness 2 years ago and always went by the 220 - 59 gauge. Figured my max was more like 166, as on hills, I would hit around 160 but I felt I could do more. However something interesting happened about 6 weeks ago after a group ride. When I downloaded the Garmin data I was shocked to see that I hit 180 briefly. Thought it was some sort of glitch! But then I was on the treadmill last week enjoying a run, zoned out rockin' with the tunes, when I noticed I was at 179! Don't know how long I was there but if I was supposed to be around 166, at the most, I kind of freaked out! I keep going for a few more minutes as I was feeling fine but then slowed down to a brisk walk and my HR dropped down to 120-130 range. I'm happy with this because to me it means I'm getting in way better shape, than I was 2 years ago, a 100 lbs heavier!
