What are the signs of Fall in your area?

In NC its the wooly worms crawling on the roads and acorns. I didn't know acorns could hurt so bad-but they sting pretty good if one falls and hits you while you're zipping down the road. You don't reckon a squirrel is sitting up there throwing acorns at us do you??

Fall? What is this "fall" of which you speak? Here in sunny FLA, the only evidence of "fall" is increased and increasing obnoxiousness of Gator fans.

I'll up your acorns with some walnuts. Now those REALLY hurt. Besides, they are all over the roads and can easily take a rider down. The other sign of Fall is leaf lookers. It may flurry some Sat. and that will send them scurrying back south. Way south.

You NC guys have a beautiful state, even if it is occasionally full of Floridians. I was up there a couple of weeks ago for the Cycle North Carolina fall tour. It was just starting to be fall on the Blue Ridge near Blowing Rock, falling leaves and a bit of color.

As mentioned above, fall hasn't made it to FL yet, but the weatherman says it might even get down into the 60's overnight this weekend! Finally some good riding weather.

Ahhh, that's nuthin'! Sunday I had a kamikaze pinecone jump into the spokes of my rear wheel thus ejecting me completely from my bike. Now THAT hurt!

We have plenty of wooly worms on the roads but they don't pose a problem. The real problems are the walnuts and hedge apples The walnuts hide under leaves and they can quickly throw you off the bike. It's easy to see the hedge apples but when they cover the road or trail it's tough getting through them.

Fall in Southern California is subtle but beautiful. The skies generally are filled with wispy or fluffy clouds, the air is clear and the temperatures perfect - between 60 - 70 degrees. My favorite time of year to ride! Also the tarantulas start to get active. I love those big spiders!

I did that section of pavement when I rode from Oceanside to San Clemente and back last year.

I also had one of those spiders run in front of my bike as I descended the lower section of Glendora Mtn Rd coming off Baldy.

Do you have goatheads there in the Fall?

You need to be tougher than that pinecone. I'm still trying to visualize how a pinecone in the rear wheel can cause a wreck. If I had pinecones available as a kid they might have been deliberately put in the spokes just for the noise they would make.

I was certainly more than a little surprised myself, and as for noise; it was silent as a ninja.

In northwest AR, the signs of fall have been:

1) Crappy weather, endless gray skies, rain, wind, cold. The sun has either gone on strike or moved to FL.
2) Shooting range crowded. Many guys zeroing deer rifles for the season. Long wait for a shooting station. Gave up and went home.
3) I'm wearing more and more clothes to be able to ride.
4) Put lights back on the bike.
5) Leaves beginning to turn.

I agree with Pam that the Fall is great riding here, except it's raining today. Rain is pretty rare here.
Next month is a ride that goes through a wildlife preserve where there can be lots of tarantulas. One time we did the ride there were so many tarantulas we had to slalom through them at speed. When I first saw them I thought they were oil spots in the distance, until they started moving.

Signs of fall?? In Atlanta we're plagued with rain from early fall thru early/mid winter.
Here comes some more.

I know it's fall when I start seeing elderly yankees in motorhomes headin' south through town for the coast.

Pam mentions some very nice SoCal fall occurences, but missed a few. I'd add Santa Anas, fires, late Hurricane swells, the tourists leaving the beaches to residents, and people from the rest of the country talking about fall.

Cooler temps and people wears coats already.
I have so many acorns on my deck and in my yard it is crazy, I didn't know that oak tree could produce that many acorns.
As far as riding goes, arm warmers and I had to wear gloves last weekend for the first time.

Today I had to wear my arm warmers for over two hours of the four hour ride... Plus, I used a lite base layer..

I notice the smashed snakes on the road this time of year. It must be migration time for small garter snakes because I can see at least one "pan-snake" per mile and in some places one every hundred yards.

Our leaves have already changed colors and fallen. Paid a couple of young kids to rake the leaves this weekend. Temps freezing most nights.

I think we went directly from summer to winter. Brr!!

Here in New England, one of the sure fired signs of fall is needing an ice scraper before driving to work in the morning.

Pansnakes! That is too funny! I've seen the same thing here. I thought they must have been seeking the heat of the asphalt.
