As for myself I feel equally at home sitting in Orchestra hall listening to the DSO and in the mosh pit banging on the stage at a Joan Jett concert.
Variety is truly the spice of life.
I don't need to search out 'popular' music. It finds me. In fact, it surrounds me. So there's no need for me to carry it in my faux-pod.

All you need is GODZILLA by Blue Oyster Cult. That's my tune for climbing!

Climbing mix-

Godzilla, Purple Haze, Don't Fear the Reaper, Too Legit to Quit, Heart of Rock and Roll

Cruising-

Any disco, Thriller, Truckin, Eagles just about all of it, Can't Touch This, California Dreamin, Peaceful Easy Feeling, I put a Spell on You (Creedance), Heard it Through the Grapevine, Power of Love
