Here are some pictures of Ice that hit an area around Hendersonville Friday. This is a terrific area to ride in the summer time. Just not right now!

If any of those trees are yours, take a rake and gently knock off the ice you can, starting with the branch tips. I've seen entire trees broken off at waist level due to the weight of the ice.

I went out yesterday and rode my mtb around on some streets that were covered with ice, well packed snow/ ice combo. Not ice like you have but still not easy either. Thinking studded tires would be a huge help. I also found out that a rear fender would be good too, my butt got soaked riding through the slush and water where the salt started to work.
I did have a goodtime though, I started out just to see what the local road at the end of my street looked like and ended up going to three different neighborhoods looking around. In all about 6 miles.
We got 20 inches of snow Friday and the roads are still a mess this morning.

I do think that noway I would even try a road bike in it though.

Ice is horrible, sorry you got that there, be safe.

Studded tires are a huge help on ice and packed snow. Not all that good in deep snow.

NOS...deep snow is only good for skis!

I tried riding the bike out of the driveway before the plows came and went about two feet, turned around and back inside and ate too much food.

These were taken a little east of BikeWNC and fortunately not around where I live. Still western NC though. It is amazing that there were a couple small pockets of this stuff in NC. The other was about 150 miles to the east of where these pictures were taken and also caused lots of problems for locals.

Where I live the temperatures were just a degree or two above freezing during the time we got the 4 inches of rain. Had it been a couple degrees colder like it was where these pictures were taken it would have been the worst disaster this area has seen since Hugo.

On ice maybe...........in ice difficult.

Get a fluid trainer

A buddie emailed me that he tried to cross country ski in the recent snow and only got 100 yards before bailing out. Too much snow even for skis. We had 23 inches and the projection is for another 12 on Tuesday!

I am calling Al Gore to get him to fly his private jet in and clear my driveway before a glacier forms.

The GOOD NEWS in all of this is that, according to the noon news, the Federal Government is shut down.

Luckily we rarely get the ICE storms that some of you experience. With us Rain hits a cold front and turns to snow. But as we live in a mild climate We get the snow melting -but then freezing. When that is on the road we have problems- on power lines and we lose power- On buildings and the get damaged. In general this is not a common occurence over here though.

But that Snow that we have had on and off since November is due to come back later this week. And next wek does not look promising either. Better clear up by the 22nd Feb though- I am on holiday for a week and travelling 400 miles North. The area I am going to was just getting over the floods but is currently snowed in. Think I will be taking the MTB to get around on.

Those light weights are they going to reduce our taxes for a snow day?

I hope you gave the bike a good cleaning afterwards. Over time the salt will eat at any of the exposed metals.

The same can be said of the Wash D.C. area....we're on the second of two back-to-back winter storms. The first one brought 24+ inches of snow starting last Friday evening. We managed to clear our driveway by Sunday, but had to wait until Tuesday morning to get plowed out. Then, less than 12 hours later it started snowing again, followed by a little rain/sleet, followed by driving wind & snow. They're predicting another 9-15".

One of the local churches put the following message on it's sign: "Whoever is praying for snow, please stop". I couldn't agree more.

well, there's ice and there's ICE!

Ice isn't always a bad thing, my wife and I were walking on a lake yesterday in Port Perry Ontario, where you could see the ice, you could see air bubbles in it, they had to go down at least a foot. It's funny though with snow, there are places where 2" of snow means it's declared a disaster area, other places where 2' is a minor inconvenience.

...and then there's Ice, Ice, BABY!!!
