Installed my Brooks B17 today...
...and all I can say is that I hope it feels a lot better on the road than it did when I sat on it just wearing my jeans. Yes, I know that firmer is better when it gets to long distances, but there are plenty of cheaper saddles out there that feel like you're sitting on a board.
Anyway, I assume that all these advocates can't be wrong and that it will be fine after I Proofide it and get a few miles on it in proper biking shorts. Or did I just drink the Koolaid?

Good luck with it.
You might find that adjustment fore and aft and tilt make a big difference in how it feels. Don't want to slide off forward or have much pressure from the nose and you don't want to be sitting with your butt on the back part over the metal frame.

Me Too !!!! I'd always be happy to get another one --- what color is it?
After adjustment, give it time, lots of time, and it will get much better.......

Personally, I have been riding B17s on all my road bikes for several years and tens of thousands of miles just as a scam to trick people like you into trying the ungodly uncomfortable contraptions. It makes it all worth it knowing I may have helped snag another sucker.

I have close to 2,000 miles on my B-17 and my butt is finally getting broken in. I have been doing it wrong, applying the Proofide to the saddle. I should have applied it to my butt, as that is what's breaking in.

I don't think you can tell anything by sitting on a saddle. I don't even think you can tell anything by riding 20 miles. I've tried several that felt fine up to about 20 miles. Between 20 and 30 though, things got uncomfortable. Between 30 and 50 they got downright painful. The thought of riding 100 miles on them was.....Ouch!
My Brooks B17 didn't start out feeling like anything special. But after 30 miles I realized I hadn't even thought about it. 60 miles - no problem. I haven't done a century on mine yet, but I certainly won't be reinstalling any of my other saddles prior to my next. My B17 started out comfortable, right out of the box. It may be getting moreso as I break it in. That would be wonderful, but it's already pretty great.

Last year, I bought a new B17 Honey special, the week before a 225km charity weekend ride, I meant to get it sooner, but.....
Anyway, I heard several people complaining about "Ass hatchets" over the weekend, but while I started to get bit numb in the cheeks, I had no real problems. it just seemed to fit me from the first mile. I hadn't really trained for such a ride, and I think if I was in better shape, I wouldn't have noticed the saddle. As it was, I was glad to get off the bike. But it was 95% tiredness, not pain.
The B17 seems to fit about 85% of the cycling fraternity, some like me, are lucky and there is no adjustment period, we must have the BSB, or British Standard Bum. Others need to mould the saddle to their curves, which can take a variable amount of time. Others, fall outside the 85th percentile and must look elsewhere.
