1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I ride an Orbea Onix with Sram Rival components and a Brooks Team Pro saddle. On the trails I ride a C'dale f600.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

I don't believe in vitamins.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I haven't slowed down, but I am more prone to injury.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I have been riding since I was about 13 years old and I'm now 51.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

My daily morning ride (before work) is a hilly 27 miles. On the weekends when I have more time (and when I'm not working), I ride 40 to 50 miles each day. Usually on Sunday, I take to the trails to beat myself up. On the road, I mostly ride alone. I like it better that way!

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

I don't keep track of annual mileage, but it's about 150 miles a week (when the weather's good).
In addition to cycling, I ski (downhill and xc) and play racquetball.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? Road bikes mostly - C'dale R800, Orbea Ora, a recumbant, and a mountain bike, the last three, however get fairly little use.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? No - I was, but stopped all meds and still have good results on all my blood work

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? Considerably - Just can't go as fast as I could when I was 14 - go figure.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? Got my first hand me down bike when I was about 4, wore out a Schwinn Hot Rod well before I was 14, got a Gitane when I was 15 and had it stolen in Holland, been on C'dale's and Orbea's since then. Other than a year on a mountain bike in Korea in 93-94, I Didn't ride much between '89 and '02, but started riding to work in 2002, been keeping at it since.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. Almost daily commuting and both weekday and weekend recreational riding.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? Very weather dependant rider, it really varries between 3 and 7 days a week giving me 200 and 250 miles a week. Overall I've been avergaing close to 10,000 miles a year.

5. What type of biking do you do? 25 mile traiing rides most days before work. Long (40-65 miles) rides on weekednds.

I ride at least once a weekend, usually both days. I average between 5000 & 6000 miles a year. The most I have ever ridden was 12000 miles in one year but I was 37, did not have a family and few work responsibilities. That wold be tough to do now.

Age:52

1. Bikes: Trek 7.7 and an older Paletti road bike that's in pieces at the moment and soon shall be just as new:-)
I play with the idea to sell the Trek and built up a pure Travel/Randonneur bike in one or two years. One for fast rides ( the Paletti) and one for the "big trips)...
Maybe a Koga, maybe a Velotraum - but with a Rohloff transmission.

2. I don't take additional pills, but for a year I really care what I eat. Vegetables, fruit, fish ... no alcohol, no sugar ( sometimes a piece of chocolate:-)). I feel much better than before and lost a lot of weight.

3. As long as I'm a little bit faster than my wife, I don't bother. She's riding just as much as I do, which isn't bad at all;-) - but of course we know we're over fifty and not going to do the Tour de France. It's the fun that counts.

4. I loved to bike when I was a child and a young man. Then we had other things to do... but we did a lot with motorcycling and side-car driving. Long distances, winter as summer, with the kids, and we're still doing that. One year ago, my wife had the crazy idea to buy a bicycle. So did I, on the spot - and actually it is as if we missed something all over these years. We're into a kind of "second childhood", - we just love it.

5. Up to 25 miles in the evening as many times as possible during the week. 50 to 65 miles on a week-end trip.

6. I just bought one of these computers one can put on the bike. I'll tell You exactly in one year, if the computer does not lie. But we do some thousand miles a year at the moment - as long as health goes, so we do !

scroca 10-04-09 11:17 AM

age:

I am 54, 6'4", weigh ~160lbs.

type of bike:
I ride a Specialized Crossroads Sport.

supplements/vitamins/minerals:
I take a daily vitamin.

slowed down:
I'm sure I've slowed down, but I don't know how much. It takes longer to recover from injury so I avoid it as much as possible. I try not to go too fast, especially when it is dark. A year ago I hit a dog that came out of no where in the dark. I went flying and broke my right thumb. It took until January before it stopped hurting when I would shift and brake with that hand, not to mention the hassle of trying to keep it warm with the splint I had to wear.

type of biking:
Almost exclusively commuting to/from work.

How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I rode a Schwinn 10 speed as a kid. Then essentially did not ride a bicylce again until... From 1997 - 2003 or so I rode once or twice a week on country roads, 20 to 25 miles each ride in a Trek 1200. I rode in 1 organized ride in my life, 50K, probably back in 2004 or 2005. I have been bicycling to work regularly for a couple of years on a Specialized Crossroads Sport. These days, I normally don't ride a bicycle other than to commute.

How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Monday - Friday, except holidays and vacation days. It is a little under 20 miles round trip; a full week is 97.5 miles, so it will probably be 4000 to 4500 miles by the end of the year.

Other fitness activities:
Currently I jog Tuesdays and Thursday and do push ups, pull ups and sit ups Mon-Wed-Fridays. I do no planned exercise on the weekends.

alaska joe 10-06-09 06:31 PM

My age is almost 55.

1. BIKES

Two road bikes: 1982 Trek 715; 1998 Litespeed Appalachian. Two mountain bikes: 1992 Merlin hardtail; 2002 Santa Cruz Superlight full suspension. One winter bike: 2003 Airborne Lucky Strike with snowcat rims and studded tires. One touring bike: 1983 Stumpjumper Sport rebuilt as a tourer.

2. SUPPLEMENTS

On coffee.

3. SLOWED DOWN

I'm still trying to speed up. But it ain't workin'.

4. HOW LONG

I bought my first real bike at age 17. A Nishiki Kokusai. I haven't looked back since then.

5. TYPE OF BIKING

I think of myself mostly as a mountain biker, but I'm faking it as I haven't been on a mountain bike all year. I did a cross country tour this summer and I have a history of touring sporadically. In truth, most of the riding I do is commuting back and forth to work.

6. MILEAGE

This year is going to close to 6,000 miles with the long tour. Usually its far less.

7. OTHER FITNESS

A little running. Sporadic x-c and downhill skiing.

Daspydyr 10-08-09 06:08 PM

Me and my bike-post 50

I ride a Mountain Bike, Norco Nitro. The frame has served me well. the rest is all replacment, so call it Frankenstein. I take some 50+ suppliements that I get from COSTCO.

The older I get the faster I was. My greatest compliment was from a 17 year old who said he had never seen anyone as old as me ride as aggressively as me. I think that was OK?

First bike and real love was a Bryce Royal from Western Auto-waaaaay back. Schwin Varsity, paperboy special, sting rays and cheap crap for years. Now I like better rides.

Mountain biking is primary love. Las Vegas doesn't have the variety that I enjoyed in NW NM. So spinning the cranks is good. I just got new hip joints and am riding for the first time in years. Learning what is here. The county has actually put some work into a nice trail system.

Setting a goal of 3000 miles for the year.

Some weights, working around the house.

Just the next 50+ year old cyclist

Hi everyone, the name is Mark. I'm 52 and I started riding about 3 months ago, (when I quit smoking). I intend to ride as long as I am able!

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Don't know LOL. I ride a TREK Navigator 2.0. I'm considering changing to something like a Giant Rapid 3 as I'd like bigger wheels and more tire pressure so I can ride faster.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
I take Vitamins E and C, and fish oil.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
A bit yes. I recently stopped playing slow pitch softball after many years. Just couldn't put up with being constantly sore.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
3 months now.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
I started off with short rides, 5 miles. My longest ride to date is 30 miles, 2 days ago. My goal is to do a century in one day before I turn 53 in July '10.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Right now I ride just about every day between 11-15 miles. Once a week I try to increase my longest ride.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone, whether they are of similar experience or not.

Thanks,
Mark

I will Be 52 In April

RaleighComp 10-28-09 11:12 PM

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I commute 20 miles round trip/day in the Boston area (Boston-Waltham and back). I have my rain bike ('94 Motiv Chro-Moly MTB with slicks and fenders), my chance-of-rain bike ('73 Raleigh Competition which I have owned since new) and my absolutely-no-chance-of-rain bike (2001 Spectrum Titanium Custom).

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Fish Oil capsules

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I've been adding to my miles the last couple years. Feel I'm in the best shape of my life and faster than I've ever been. Don't get me wrong. If I rode this much when I was younger, I'm sure I would feel like I'm slowing down a bit. Luckily for me, I didn't ride as much and as long as I do now when I was younger.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
All my life, but off again, on again. On a good 20 month run right now.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
20 miles/day commuting, no matter what the weather. The worse the weather, the more I love the challenge. Missed 2 days due to deep snow in the last 12 months. Also zero sick days in the last two years. In the nice weather I do 40-60 mile rides on the weekend with the Charles River Wheelmen (local bike club). Last year I did a lot of single-track mountain biking, but I haven't done it even once this year. No particular reason, other than I built myself a great road bike this year that I'm enjoying immensely.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Every weekday, at least. 5,000 miles in 2008, on track for 7,500 in 2009.

If you haven't already, perhaps you might indicate your age. It helps others to see that folks 50+ do great things.
Sorry if I'm jumping into the conversation a little early. I'll be 50 in March 2010, just a few months away.
