53 1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? Road - Trek Domane 4.5 (2 months) MTB - Trek Mamba Fitness/Bike path - Fuji flatbar. Too small and needs to be replaced but the price was right. 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? I have a multi vitamin sitting on the counter that I need to remember to take. Will work on this. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? "slowed"? Don't have anything to compare to. As far as how much physical yard work I can do in a day compared to ten years ago much less. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? A little over a year. Started for fitness and just love it. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. Trying to work up to a Century but the body is not cooperating. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? Not consistent. Going one injury to the next. As much as I can. 4 or 5 days when everything works out. MTB an hour per week. One or two 45 minute fitness rides before work (4:30 am) if everything goes well. We try for one longer evening road ride (12-30 mile) and a big road ride on the weekend (20-60 mile). Currently having neck problems and spending some of these times ridding with our 11 year old trying to get him going so we can do more. (yes 11. I have kids 11-31 and a couple of grandchildren). But this year is going to be better! |

Good for you and God bless. My youngest son is a 5 yr cancer survivor. Each May he has an INDY (I'm Not Dead Yet) party. To me that's a bit like tempting fate. Hang in there!
It's good to hear that your son has been doing well for five years. I had an uncle who had cancer that they removed from his jaw. He was in his early fifties when it was discovered. He died at ninety-five with never a sign of cancer after they had removed what they found over forty years before his death. I plan to be around for a long time and ride my bike as much as possible. |
A big welcome to
Pattobin Petrolhead MrBetJet MickeyMaguire Please use and enjoy the 50+ forum. There are a lot of good and interested folks here. |
Did fifteen miles today around a lake on what is purported to be a 'Bike' trail...ha! It's practically all stones varying from 1" to 4" in some places with lots of dips. I suppose MTB and 'real men' love the challenge but I fell on a tight turn right after a stream ford. Ouch! Anyway the patella on my right knee is bothering me. The standard tips about leg angle and knee over the pedal shaft seem in the ball park. Does it sound like I might need to bring the seat back a bit? The seat is comfortable, no numbness in my hands and fingers, none of my man stuff went to sleep or is sore, no back pains...only the patella. It's been a tiny bit sore the past few days, and stable but this ride I had to get on it quite often to make it up the short, but frequent hills.
Thanks in advance. Rich |
Rich,
It sounds like your riding is getting better all the time so far. Instead of the usual litany about getting a bike fit, I think you said you had the LBS do a pretty good one when you got your bike, you might want to use the book I and many others have referenced for fit and for the 50+ rider getting back in to cycling, Cycling Past 50 http://www.amazon.com/Cycling-Past-A...ords=joe+friel and use his fit chapters to fine tune your bike to you since you are getting used to riding and can tell when and what is not up to par for you. He has a lot of good, well reasoned books for cyclist out that are very helpful. I have his "Training Bible" and use his Cyclist Diary daily. If you need a copy I'll even send you mine to use if you would like, just shoot me a P.M. if I can help you out. Bill |

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Cannondale CAAD9 6 Trek Shift 2 Diamondback hybrid 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? I avoid processed foods, I take a daily multi-vitamin, and I keep my caffeine intake low. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? None. I started at 8 mph in January with a max of 2.5 miles. Today, 8 months later, I'm up to 54 miles at 16.8 mph average and a century in sight by the end of the year. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? Before January I hadn't rode in 25 years. Back then I was riding about 35 miles max. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. 1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? Right now I'm riding a Trek 7.4FX 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? My dietary habits are horrible. I've been trying to increase my protein intake. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? My last (and only) Century was about 25 years ago. I don't know if I could do that again. Training to get to a certain level takes much longer than before. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? I would say up to about 20 years ago I was your average recreational rider. Then, life just got in the way and I lost interest. I've begun cycling again and it's been about 1 year and I'm loving it again. I think I'll die riding my bike. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. Mostly short 12 - 25 mile fitness rides with my wife on the weekend. I usually get another one in on my own during the week. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? See #5 |

Hi Earle, welcome to the 50+ asylum, seems that you are pretty well established with those numbers and the commute, great to have you aboard here. Now, what is your choice of post ride Pie? Be sure and schedule your colonoscopy and we love pictures, I believe that covers all the usual things here.

After anything longer than a hundred miles I treat my self to a milkshake. Especially when its hot out. Colonoscopy has been taken care of. here are some pictures of my bikes that I ride now. I am having Alex Meade build me one as we speak. It will be the bike I ride PBP on. I will post a picture of it when it is done.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=337929http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=337930http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=337931http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=337932
These are my bikes. The Giant when I want to go fast. The Trek is my commuter. The Raleigh is for riding the rails to trails. Then there is the good old GT Timberline the SUV of the group. Like a skilled craftsman, you need more than a hammer to get the job done.

56 1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? I ride a Schwinn Median hybrid. 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? No, but my doctor recently gave me a cortisone shot in my foot for an injury (it hasn't helped). 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? I've slowed down in 2013 due to a painful achilles injury. Last year, I was doing long distance running and posting my best times. I can't run now but I can bike and, occasionally, get in a hill climb. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? I started bicycling 3 months ago, after having done stationary biking for 8 months. Otherwise, I haven't biked more than a day or two since I was a young kid. 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. I like long, hilly rides. I feel it builds endurance and strength. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? I've been biking about 200 miles a week. This weekend's long ride was 65 miles. |
Hi Hiller, welcome to the 50+ gang. There are several threads here from members with foot and Achilles tendon problems, search for them or do a post about your problem if you'd like. Not meant to take the place of your doctor but some experiences in what worked for others can help a lot.

Thanks, Bill, maybe I will check them out. After a year of this crap injury, I'll listen to anything. Ron

55 1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? Road bikes exclusively. My 'Go-To' bike is a early 1990s Battaglin with Columbus MAX steel tubing and Campy Chorus kit. A little heavy by current standards, but then, so am I! When i get down to 225#, I'll include a Bianchi 928 carbon-framed bike with Veloce kit. Compact cranks, great for climbing. When(if) I get back down to 210#, I'll add a 1995 Ritchey Road Logic, with full 8 speed Dura Ace, my first serious road bike. 2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? Nope. 3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? A bit, though it could be the extra pounds. I laid off cycling for a while. Mostly I notice recovery is not quite as fast. 4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? I stopped riding as soon as I got a driver's license at 16. Started again at 38, and have alternated riding seriously and hardly riding at all. Not one for half-measures, I guess! 5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. I like to do rides up to 25 mi during the week, and 60+ on the weekends, but it will be a few months before I build back up to that. Will probably do a century or two next spring/summer. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? At the moment, 3 times a week. I've done as much as 5 times a week in years past, and as little as none. My best year was >3500 miles, but that was a while back. It would be nice to get back up close to 3000 miles/year. |
