Oh yea - Dnvr Fox what a great Post. At 57 I find that often I start riding before I decide the exact route I will travel. Even as I get more years on this body, I find variety keeps the juices flowing.
And Heck ! fellow biker my age said they had to take his dad's bike away from him at 87, he kept getting lost! Gotta admit though, guess if he had a 'pattern' he would still be riding.

That is based on his personal experience, and is likely quite correct.
To make the blatant generalization that:
"Older people like ruts as it makes them feel secure."
Generalizing it to all older people is what I object to.
And hopefully accuracy is "the essence of forums/message boards," not unproven generalizations. If opinion is stated it should be prefaced or ended with with "IMHO," IMHO!

Ever since living in my new home (almost 3 years now) and riding regularly on the local bike path behind my house, I have seen a gentleman about my age riding either his mountain bike or road bike just about every time I go out.
I have tried to encourage some friendliness, have waved and nodded hello regularly.
This year I got him to wave back and a couple of times to say "Hello."
Today, he passed me and asked as he was passing if I had a computer, and if I did, could I measure a specific distance for him. I said yes, and we met further down the trail where he waited for me.
His name is Bob, he is 66, and he rides the exact same 40 mile route EVERY DAY. He used to run marathons, and that is how he trained for marathons. He is 66 yo, and lives a little further from the trail than I do.
The reason he wanted me to measure was that some construction has changed the trail in one portion for awhile, and he is marking out another exact 40 mile route - which he does in 2.5 hours, winter or summer, except in blizzards. For some reason, he has no computer on his bike.
That means he generally rides 280 miles per week, or about 1200 miles per month.
I explained that I liked variety, and rode new areas whenever I could, and I loved to explore. Not for him, he left no doubt about that!
I rode back with him several miles, and although he stated, "I am going on ahead of you" I easily kept up with him (pat myself on the back!). We were going about 23 mph.
He rides in the drops about 90% of the time, and stand to pump frequently!
I really enjoy meeting new folks.

It must be "revive old posts" week!!
Bob moved up the road a bit (6 miles) to a new "patio home."
His immediate riding area would now be around the Cherry Creek reservoir, so I don't see him, as I ride another section of the trail.
However, I am as certain as anything that he has a 40 mile route marked out and does the same exact route every single day.

There outa be a law against reviving 4 year old threads.
Either that or I need to pay more attention.
No offense MNbikeguy.
Hey DF - I think you've mellowed a bit in 4 years.

Bob is 70 now, I'm assuming. Whatever his routine is, it seems to be working and is clearly not a rut like this thread has become.

While I truly am glad Bob is alive and well, this thread was revived in response to the current debate a few threads below.

Naw, I haven't mellowed. It is just that I have convinced the entire forum that my way of thinking is correct, so I don't have to be the guardian of the "truth" any more!

but the main difference between a rut and a grave is how much dirt you have on top of you.

Old people DO fall into "ruts" and established patterns, and they DO feel more secure because of it. If you haven't joined them, it's obvious you aren't old enough yet!
Old Thread, old thread... who used the word old for this thread? It ain't old, it's just been waiting for younger ideas to venture along.

Sigh!!
Sure, and all young people have no ruts nor established patterns, and feel very insecure because of it. And all winters in Colorado are cold, and New Yorkers are not friendly, and . . . all generalizations are accurate.
Hey, whoever revived this thread after a year of blissful solace, hang your head in shame.
One more argument for limiting threads to three months of inactivity before closing them.

I think ole' Denver has gotten in a "rut". It's his way or the highway!
C'mon, take a joke and keep moving and breathing Denver. Any day above ground is a good one!
Right behind you following in your tracks.... er, ah, ruts....

I think this is a very entertaining post, and I'm sorry I missed it the first time around. Thanks to whomever revived it (gabiker?)! I may not even have been posting here when this post first arrived.
I try to avoid ruts (on road or off), but thanks to the OP and all the great perspectives of the 50+ riders here, I will never think of ruts in quite the same way again.

How in the world do you even find a 4-year old thread? Either it's just picking a thread at random, or it's evidence of having way too much free time.
