Water

I bring each bottle of water and Gatorade and energy bars for nutrition.

Plain water has worked great for me for the last 300,000 miles.
Havew tried a few mixes, but water is just fine. |

During yesterday's century in mid-90's heat I just had water on the bike. At our lunch stop I bought a bottle of Nestle's chocolate milk and ate my "brown-bag" PB&J sandwich. I managed ~16mph average, and felt good enough to ride to work today. I guess that qualifies for "riding my age" this year. Bday: 3/5/45.
I don't trust chemical preparations to keep me healthy. BTW, I like Clif bars, no matter what cylinfool says. |

Cytomax Tangy Orange. Did a 65 miler Saturday, 16 mph average (hilly, no stops) (will be 64 Sunday). I have found that Cytomax definitely keeps my legs feelin" fresher.

Another vote for Hammer Heed. Lemon Lime.
Used to drink water only, didn't want none of that newfangled sports drink stuff, then I got converted to sports drinks, then found Heed. Goes down much easier than just water. On longer rides (4 hours +) I'll use Hammer Sustained Energy. Liquid nutrition. When I do that, I'll skip the sandwiches. |
I'll vote for Hammer Products too but I really like the Caffe Latte Perpetuem! I've ridden several double centuries fueled by C-L Perpetuem and didn't get tired of the flavor.
Hammer Gel Expresso is a good compliment to the Caffe Latter Perpetuem if it's available at the checkpoints. Plus, Hammer Products kept me fueled enough (but not too much) during a double so I finish feeling well fed and not hungry at all. Rick / OCRR |
Water. I also carry a flask of Raspberry flavored Hammer Gel. Oh, and I ususally chew surgarless gum too.
|
We use powdered Gatorade and dilute to 50% of that recommended.
|
back in the 70's ,on long rides I would stop at a convenience store and get a pack of choc covered malted milk balls and a Pepsi(real sugar ones) and all was well...I have been lately using a big drink of gatoraid and said MMballs ..I still take a couple water bottles and finish them , but the hit of energy from the MMballs and Gatoraid at the middle of the ride is amazing..Bud

 Pivo!

I make a weak mixture of Gatorade, from powder, and through in some powdered tea for caffeine. I eat Payday candy bars, salt, protein and sugar. What more do you need?
|
Hammer Gells and Heed. If it really hot I will drop some electrolyte pills into the water bottle too.
|
This thread is just what I needed. Out on tour last week for eight days. The last three were 72 miles, 107 at 91F and 77 miles.
Got home and was having a slow recovery. I decided I needed to look at nutrition and hydration a bit more closely. |

Cytomax Citrus. It works for me. I add Endurolytes on hot days.
I rather like Clif bars ... I dunno how anyone can not like the chocolate flavors. For me, regular food works best but I do mix powders sometimes. My LBS has a variety of individual size poweders so I can try many different kinds. I like to switch around anyway. |
Half gatoraid half green tea.....good stuff
|
Started with Powerbar Endurance Lemon/Lime which was good.
Switched to Accelerade until i realized that 1) it gets sour after a few hours when temps are hot and 2) it leaves a permanent taste in the bottle plastic. Now uses Hammer Heed (Lemon/Lime) and Perpetuem (Cafe Latte) for long rides. Also uses gels and bars but tend to prefer Cliff Blocks. |

Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but your whole body is chemicals, the bread in your sandwich is full of chemicals, when you sweat you lose chemicals and as for Nestle's chocolate... loads of chemicals. I don't have a problem with chemicals as long as they're the right chemicals. FWIW. If it's hot, SIS Isotonic drinks, because water or carbo-based drinks can't replace the minerals you lose when you perspire. |
For long rides (200k or more) I have a food bottle good for about 100k
In that food bottle is Heed, a bit of whey, and carnation instant breakfast. I also carry a bottle of gatorade and a bottle of plain water. I get more water as needed and carry everything else in powder form in my trunk bag. This gets me through brevet series. oh!.....I also get twizzlers and Dr. Pepper at control stops :) Cyril |

Used to be there was but one Green Tea, or so I thought. In the supermarket the other day and it seemed almost every tea came in a "green" version. So, which one? |
